TEAM OF THE SEASON – MICHEL VORM

various

Not the top points scorer, that was Joe Hart, but, really, the undisputable GK for team of the season.

He started off with a value of 4.0 in the team that came up to the premier league via the play offs ( a 4-3  win at that ) with the opening  fixture against Man City where he conceded 4.  He was really a gift for those people who just wanted to rotate the 2 cheapest goalkeepers.  How many dumped him in the free gameweek 2 wildcard I wonder.  His value peaked at 5.3 and it wasn’t until game week 26 until he had his first negative net transfers.

Swanseas defensive record was good in terms of clean sheets.  14 in total, this was largely built at home where the goals conceded were less than Man Uniteds (although this stat was distorted by the City hammering).  14 clean sheets was the 4th best in the division although largely built on the 9 home clean sheets.

A save every 24 minutes is a strong base stat and shows his contribution to the team.  It also gives that rare combination of clean sheets and save points which generally don’t go together for obvious reasons.

Compare the top teams saves per minute Cech only made a save every 33 minutes for his 10 clean sheets and £6.8m value.  Even a busy keeper like Kenney of QPR only made a save every 27 minutes for his 7 clean sheets.  Last years save king Foster only made a save every 31 minutes for 10 clean sheets.

The crucial factor though for cheap goalkeepers is the fact that this option relies on home and away rotation and this is the key factor in Vorms success as the 9 home clean sheets should have all yielded points if you had your rotation right.

I’m not that keen on him next year at the moment.  A price hike will follow surely and with Rodgers leaving and maybe Caulker going to back to Spurs who knows what Swanseas clean sheet prospects will be.
