Telegraph Fantasy Football 16/17 tips: Is now the time to transfer in Christian Benteke?

Crystal Palace smashed their club record to sign Christian Benteke from Liverpool for £27m. The Belgian striker had previously joined the Reds for £32.5m back in July 2015, scoring 10 goals despite only starting eight Premier League games under Jurgen Klopp.

Why Benteke wasn’t given many opportunities to shine under the ex-Dortmund boss is unknown, but he’ll be a welcome addition to Crystal Palace’s squad, especially since they’re yet to find the back of the net this season.

Back-to-back 1-0 defeats at the hands of West Brom and Tottenham have left Alan Pardew’s side in 19th, but the arrival of Benteke is sure to ease fans’ worrying.

Let’s not forget, this is a man that scored 42 goals for a poor Aston Villa side, averaging just under a goal every other game. He’s also scored six times for his country, has vast Premier League experience and at just 25, could have many years to come at Selhurst Park.

From a Telegraph Fantasy Football perspective, now could be the time to bring in Benteke. At £5.2m he’s considerably cheaper than a whole host of the Premier League’s elite, such as Harry Kane (£6.8m), Romelu Lukaku (£6.4m) and Jamie Vardy (£6.3m), all of which have struggled for points so far this season.

What’s even better is that he’s currently in less than 1% of teams, so getting on the band wagon early could give you a huge boost over your rivals, should he perform.

Another reason why a gamble on Benteke makes sense lies within Palace’s next six fixtures:

Bournemouth (H)
Middlesbrough (A)
Stoke (H)
Sunderland (A)
Everton (A)
West Ham (H)

Three winnable home matches as well as three trips to sides that struggle to keep clean sheets. Palace have arguably the easiest upcoming fixtures of any side in the Premier League and if Benteke can find form, he’ll churn out TFF points.
