Here’s some striker options for the Telegraph fantasy football World Cup format.
telegraph fantasy football world cup 2014 – some striker options
The telegraph format is very different to the Sun Dream Team format in that there are far more transfers (40 to be used at anytime) and no bonus points. It’s just goals and assists.
That means there is far more scope to pick players from teams who won’t necessarily progress. However to some degree the teams that are likely to progress have the best fixtures which will generate the best point scorers. Here’s my take then on some striking options for your team. I will also do a short budget striker options as well. Underneath the table is a key and then I’ve added some notes on each player including any injury worries.

Messi
Amazing statistical season for Barca despite the criticism. Will be fully motivated to perform given the location of the finals. Has pens and direct free kicks also in his armoury plus a very favourable Group.
Group F fixtures: Bosnia Iran Nigeria
Neymar
A player much criticised in his first season for Barca but one who shines for his National team. Like Messi has pens and direct free kicks plus a favourable Group. Fred and Hulk are the other 2 strikers who you could potentially use as a double up for the favourable fixtures.
Group A fixtures: Croatia Mexico Cameroon
Aguero
You could easily make a case for Higuain instead of Aguero but I’m a huge fan of the City striker and the transfers in the Telegraph format give more scope if he has an injury issue which has plagued him this year.
Group F fixtures: Bosnia Iran Nigeria
Ronaldo
Needs to be monitored in the friendly against ROI to see if he is truly fit but other than that his domestic and international record speaks for itself. Will also have pens and direct free kicks in his armoury.
Group G fixtures: Germany USA Ghana
RVP
Has declared himself 100% fit (although the interview don’t inspire confidence) and again the ability to make transfers and see team sheets will help mitigate the injury risk that has plagued him all season. In a difficult Group but although Spain has a good defensive record Chile do concede goals
gGroup G fixtures: Spain Australia Chile
Lukaku
Does have an injury worry after going off against Tunisia with an ankle strain. Has a favourable Group and has all the motivation in the World now that he’s expressed his desire to leave Chelsea which will give him extra motivation to perform.
Group H fixtures: Algeria Russia South Korea
Diego Costa
Seems to have put his injury worries behind him with 74 minutes played in the recent friendly against ElSalvador. The Brazilian Spanish naturalised Striker will have extra motivation to perform in his own country and should be guaranteed a place even with the recnt false 9 experiments. Tricky Group is the only negative.
Group B fixtures: Holland Chile Australia
Benzema
Has shown he is fit after his 2 goal haul against a very compliant Jamaica team. It was interesting that both Giroud and Benzema played and that plus his performance and the fact he dominated gametime in the qualifiers makes him a tempting acquisition.
Group E fixtures: Honduras Switzerland Ecuador
Luis Suarez
Still talking a positive story about playing after his operation on his knee which he injured in the final premier league game against Newcastle. Still a big risk and again the team sheet will need to be analysed before he gets into anyone’s tea. Should take Uruguays pens and dominate direct free kicks. Difficult Group is the other negative.
Group D fixtures: Costa Rica England Italy
Dzeko
Despite being criticised for his conversion issues his Premier league season stats were impressive and his qualifying record was nothing short of amazing. Probably won’t take pens. The value differential isn’t as strong as for Sun Dream Team.
Group F fixtures: Argentina Nigeria Iran
Cavani
The alternative if Suarez is injured.
Group D fixtures: Costa Rica England Italy
Alexis Sanchez
Chile and Barca winger who is practically now a traditionall forward. Has a good scoring record for Chile and Barca. Doesn’t have pens though and in a tough Group
Group B fixtures: Australia Spain Holland
