Sun Dream Team World Cup 2014 transfer window 1 – striker options

The importance of team structure

As I said for the defenders, goalkeepers and midfielders in those articles, picking the best players is only part of the equation here.  Remember the 1st transfer window is prior to the round of 16 and the 2nd transfer window is prior to the quarter finals.  Ideally you want all 11 players to survive the quarter finals but that will be difficult.  However you should have that in the back of your mind for this transfer window 1 as well.  See my earlier article called Sun World Cup fantasy football tips – some thoughts on the best countries for transfer window 1 to stimulate your thinking.

Striker options table:

Here’s my table of the options.  I’ve put them in order of how I would pick them given no issues over team structure.   The table doesn’t show the current points as I’ve tried to give data on goals as the primary determinant of points.  There’s a key at the bottom of the table plus some narrative behind each player:

Key:

WC Goals:  World Cup goals scored in the Group stages

All Intl App/Goals:  The total number of International appearances and goals

WC Qualf App/Goals:  The appearances and goals in the World Cup 2014 qualifying games

Club 13/14  App/Goals/Assts:  The appearances, goals and assists for his club in the 2013/14  season including League, European and Cup games

Messi

Been in fantastic form at this World Cup.  Argentina also have got good  fixtures in Switzerland first and possibly Belgium next.  Impossible to ignore in my view.  Has pens and most set pieces.  The undoubted star of the team  for Star Man awards

Neymar

2 brilliant games and 1 ordinary game.  Brazil have stuttered a little but Neymar has been terriffic.  Will monopolise Star Man awards if Brazil win.  Has pens and direct free kicks

Benzema

Gone from a slight injury dount prior to the WC and seeing Giroud in great form to being one of the Stars of the WC.  Good first fixture against Nigeria but then difficult one potentially against Germany.  Despite missing a penalty should retain them for France.

RVP

A man reborn now free from Moyes.  Been in excellent form.  Tricky first fixture against a defensively adept team in Mexico but Costa Rica or Greece next if they get through that.

Cavani

Praised more for his pressing of Pirlo than his goal scoring so far in this WC.  Despite all the hype the goal scoring record is only ok  without being exceptional.  Should now be the most forward striker although the lack of mobility of Forlan may seem Cavani play behind him.  Tricky fixtures with Colombia next and then possibly Brazil in the quarters

Sanchez

Been in great form with this attacking Chile side.  Main drawback is that first game is against Brazil and then possibly Colombia next.  Vidal will be the penalty taker though

Higuain

If you’re planning on doubling up on Argentina then with Aguero uncertain to return due to injury then Higuain is your option.  Hasn’t performed that well at this World Cup but an excellent international record and a reasonable first season in Italy.

Fred

Again hasn’t impressed in this World Cup but probably a better double up than Hulk if you want to increase your Brazil coverage.  Good international record but tricky fixtures with Chile first and then potentially Colombia next.  The details on club scoring were a little unreliable so treat with a pinch of salt

Thats it.  I’ll be doing my transfers next.
