Here’s a brief article on the Sun Dream Team Goal keeping choices.

The Sun World Cup fantasy football tips – Goalkeeping options

The goal keeping position is one that doesn’t particularly score well in Sun Dream Team and it’s pretty rare that it gets a Star Man award.  There are 2 choices here; 1. Pay a premium and get GKs that have a reasonable chance of seeing you though the tournament or 2.  Minimise the expenditure and accept up to 3 of your 8  transfers to replace them or take a view over the last transfer and leave it out.

By the way, if you haven’t seen my article on the defensive options then that gives you stats on the teams defensive performances

I’ve grouped the keepers by the chances of them getting through the tournament and compared their cost to the budget option in the defence.

Premium Keepers

If you assume the most likely semi final lineup will be Brazil Argentina Spain and Germany lets look at the keeping options there;

Brazil

Julio Cesar is available at £5.0m which is the same cost as the budget option of Luiz.  That makes him an option if you want to minimise the risk of having to use transfers.  The main issue is that he’s hardly the most reliable of keepers and it’s difficult to see him getting many 7+ ratings let alone a Star Man award.

Spain

Casillas is the GK here and is £5.5m compared to the budget option of Alba at £5.0m.  He hasn’t been a regular for Real Madrid by any stretch and only played Cup games.  He’s also certainly not blunder proof and I guess there’s an outside chance that De Gea could take his place. He does however seem to have the trust of Del Bosque.

Argentina

GK Romero at £4.0m is reasonable value compared to F Fernandez at £3.5m.  However the Argentinian defence certainly isn’t it’s strong point and to make it worse Romero again has made a number of mistakes in qualifying which will undoubtedly cost him in 7+ ratings if replicated.

Germany

Germany is undoubtedly the best keeper of the 4 but he’s unfortunately the most expensive at £6.0m.  When you conside you can get Mertesacker at £4.0m so it’s just not a good use of funds.

The other quarter final hopefuls

Here’s some keepers which should get through their Groups and  have a good chance of getting to the quarters.   However if they do they are likely to go up against one of the teams above.  This means there is a good chance that you may need to spend 1 transfer to exit them

Colombia

Possibly having to face Brazil in a quarter.  GK Ospina at £2.5m he’s the same price as Yepes and is therefore a reasonable budget option.

France

LLoris at £4.0 seems a fairly expensive option for someone who could end up playing Germany in the quarters for a team that hasn’t exelled defensively.  The make up of the French defence isn’t clear so you’d probably have to opt for Evra at £4.5m which seems far too expensive.

Belgium

Belgian GK Courtois was arguably GK of the year world wide last season.  He’s expensive though at £4.0m compared to the budget option of Alderweireld at £3.0m

Uruguay

A tough Group adds further risk to progress and clean sheets.  Muslera at £3.0m seems expensive compared to RB Pereira at £2.0m.

Italy

From the same tough Group as Uruguay.  Buffon at £3.0m is a quality keeper who seems good value compared to the rest of the defence which is a little hard to predict line up wise.

Budget options

If you’re willing to take the transfer risk here are a couple of cheap options

Greece

GK Karnezis at £1.0m offers value at £1.0m compared to the budget option of FB Torosidis at £2.0m.  In an even Group for 2nd place they could potentially qualify for the knockout phase in battle with Japan and Ivory Coast any of which could make it through in 2nd place.

Japan

GK Kawashima should be the Japanese GK given his qualifying record.  At £1.5m he’s slightly more expensive than the budget option of Yoshida.  In the same Group as Greece.

I haven’t decided how I’m going to proceed.  It may depend on budget.
