Trippier

Last season, Tottenham Hotspur finished with the best defence in the league with only 26 goals against, and that was despite stars like Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, and Kyle Walker picking up injuries. Walker has since left for a big money move to Manchester City, but Spurs already have a grand replacement in Kieran Trippier – who performed very well in Walker’s stead last season.

In Trippier’s six starts, Tottenham managed to keep three clean sheets, and the 26-year-old managed to produce more of an attacking threat than his predecessor with five assists in just 12 total appearances – six of which were for less than 15 minutes. This is compared to Walker’s six assists in 33 games.

You’ll want to include a member of this top-ranking defence, and Trippier may be not only the most effective going forward but also the cheapest on many sites. Danny Rose is also rated very highly for his contributions going forward but looks set to miss the start of the season, having only recently returned to light training.

Valencia

Despite their many injury troubles and deep run in the EFL Cup and Europa League, Manchester United still managed to end the season with the second-lowest goals against count at 29. While a lot of this was down to the superstar performances of David de Gea, the defenders profited in fantasy Premier League.

Assuming that they’re healthy, the defence looks very deep and the manager will likely look to rotate many of the players throughout the season, apart from one. Antonio Valencia, since shifting from right wing to right-back, has moulded into a reliable defender. He may not be as much of a threat going forward these days, but his killer cross still enabled him to garner three assists in the Premier League last season, and he scored a goal.

With big Romelu Lukaku up top and a presumably more reliable centre-back situation for next season, Manchester United look set to be a Premier League challenger next season and are 7/2 to win in the Premier League odds. So, Valencia should be able to push forward more and claim more assists while still accumulating strong defensive fantasy points over the campaign.

Alonso

With Antonio Conte’s three-at-the-back formation, wing-backs Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso were able to support the back line as well as push high up the field; being given the whole lane to run down thanks to the wide forwards cutting inside.

Last season, both Gary Cahill and Marcos Alonso finished as the joint-second highest scoring defenders in the Premier League, but Alonso’s three assists to Cahill’s none puts him ahead by way of goal contributions. Victor Moses claimed three goals and three assists in the league, also making him a worthy option.

Chelsea will continue to be a defensive juggernaut next season, especially with new additions Antonio Rudiger joining the back three and Tiemoue Bakayoko potentially accompanying N’Golo Kante in midfield to form a brick wall in front of the defence. So, having the likes of Marcos Alonso, who can claim more points than many midfielders, will be of huge benefit to your fantasy Premier League team.
