Which Tottenham Defender Should You Pick in Fantasy Premier League?

Fantasy Premier League

Last season, Tottenham Hotspur finished with the most favourable goal difference overall and the lowest goals against count, at just 26.  A Tottenham defender already looks to be a great bet for your fantasy Premier League team, so we’re going to break down which one you should get.

Which Tottenham Defender Should You Pick in Fantasy Premier League?

Despite selling Kyle Walker to Manchester City, their defence and goalkeeping situation still looks rock solid and set for another stronghold of a season.  Which one should you pick?

Eric Dier

Last season, Eric Dier spent much of the season at centre-back, but he’s classified as a midfielder for fantasy Premier League so therefore not an option in FPL with no clean sheet points. Unless there’s an injury, Dier will most likely play as a defensive midfielder next season, which is where he’ll want to play if he wants to be a part of Gareth Southgate’s plans for the England set up. Given their recent performances against France and Scotland, where you can see the team predictably had question marks over them going in, a strong defensive midfielder would be great for the national team, so hopefully, he stays in midfield.

Toby Alderweireld

Breaking through as one of the most trustworthy defenders in the Premier League over the last couple of years, Alderweireld is strong in defence and can provide at the attacking end. He already has six goals and two assists for Spurs through two seasons. However, the Belgian is more expensive than Trippier or Davies, and while he will get a lot of defensive points and few deductions for bookings – only one Premier League yellow card last season – he still looks like he will primarily pick up defensive points.

Jan Vertonghen

Tottenham’s highest scoring defender in Fantasy Premier League last season, Jan Vertonghen forged the other half of the solid centre-back pairing to sit in front of Hugo Lloris. He’s not one to score too many goals – not scoring at all last season – and picks up bookings more frequently than Alderweireld. Much like his compatriot, he looks like he will just pick up primarily defensive points.

Danny Rose

What a left-back Danny Rose has become. Like Dier, he’ll be wanting to impress in the early season to be a part of the England set up, but unfortunately, he will likely miss the start of the season. Manager Mauricio Pochettino recently announced that Rose has returned to London to commence his recovery on the training ground. Last season, in just 18 Premier League games, the Englishman collected two goals and three assists, making his cost potentially very worthwhile when he returns.

Ben Davies

With Rose out, the left back position will likely fall to Welshman Ben Davies. It’s possible, but unlikely, that Vertonghen could shift over to his former position, and Dier will drop into centre-back. However, given his play last season, Davies will likely get the nod. Davies can contribute fantasy points at both ends of the pitch, and he’ll be battling hard to keep his place over Rose.

Kieran Trippier

At the end of last season, Kieran Trippier greatly impressed and even earned an England cap. His performances mean that Spurs weren’t too fussed about losing Kyle Walker, and makes his massive £50 million fee even more of a windfall considering the ready-made replacement available. Trippier actually performed better than Walker during his brief first-team spell, collecting five assists from six starts to Walker’s six from 30 starts. Quite underrated regarding fantasy Premier League cost, Trippier looks to be a hidden gem coming into the new season and should be snapped up as the best Tottenham defender option by fantasy premier league managers.
