Barclays fantasy premier league my 2nd draft team – major changes!

Here’s my 2nd draft Barclays fantasy premier league team.  Theres a number of changes to my first fantasy premier league team from the first one which have resulted from re-thinking and pre-season

Man Utd
substitute player Player information

de Gea – £6.0m

In the end I thought £6.0m for De Gea and a £4.0m benchwarmer with a total investment of £10m were worth the £1m over the £9m that would have been spent on 2 £4.5m goalkeepers.  The 19 Man U clean sheets last year were just too compelling.  There is a Lindegaard risk definitely but having weighed it up Im willing to take it
Man City
substitute player Player information

Zabaleta £6.0m

He’s not safe when Richards returns if 4-4-2 returns to the formation of choice but again Ive decided its a risk Im willing to take in order to save the £0.5m that i would have needed to purchase Lescott.  Despite being the 2nd best team in clean sheets in my mind the underlying stats showed they were the best defensive team and representation is definitely worth it at this price.
Chelsea
substitute player Player information

Ivanovic – £6.5m

5th best opening 6 fixtures and a double game week to start convinced me to start with a Chelsea defender in fantasy premier league.  At £6.5m they’re more expensive than I would like especially when you see they only had 10 clean sheets last year.  Im banking on this improving significantly now that the chaos of AVB has left.  Could have gone for Cole at the same price but Ivanovic’s set piece strength  and the emergence of Bertrand has made me finally leap towards Ivanovic.
Everton
substitute player Player information

Hibbert £5.5m

Everton in my mind had better underlying defensive stats than Liverpool Arsenal and Chelsea last year and with them having the 7th best opening 6 fixtures Ive gone for Hibbert and tried to ignore the risk of Neville at RB. Jagielka at £6.0m is definitely the safer option but just not enough funds spare unfortiunately
Chelsea
substitute player vice-captain Player information

Hazard – £9.5m

I wasn’t impressed with his first competitive game against Man City in the CS but I’ve rationalised this by saying how many would have looked good with a man down against the champions.  Fantastic record in France and unlike Mata scores and assists.  Plus I think he’s a better bet to play both games given Matas busy summer
Tottenham
substitute player Player information

Bale £9.5m

I know I know after all my raving about VDV you’re suddenly looking at Bale.  Its just that the stats weren’t that different and when it came down to it Bale seemed the safer option.
Reading
substitute player Player information

Guthrie – £4.5m

In my mind he’s the best filler for midfield, everyone else seems to be a yellow card magnet or be a 2 point only option.  the argument against this is that as a new signing and a free one at that you’ve got no record of appearances to fall back on.   However he seems to have had good representation in the latter pre-season games and Im confident of him being in the line up on Saturday
Aston Villa
substitute player Player information

N’Zogbia – £6.5m

OK here’s the reason why Lescott and Jagielka aren’t in the team.  i had Noble at £5m in my team to rotate with Guthrie. however, when it came to it I just couldn’t resist the transformation i’m hoping that the attacking madman Lambert  will have on Villa.  That hopefully will bring out the best in the mercurial Frenchman who is a sleeping giant in my mind.   Villa have the 3rd best opening 6 fixtures
Swansea
substitute player Player information

Graham £6.0m

This was difficult as there were so many good options for the 3rd striker but in the end I definitely wanted a Swansea player with them having the best opening 6 fixtures of any team and although I thought Michu was going to be that person in the end Graham tearing up pre-season was just too difficult to ignore.  Doesnt have the greatest underlying stats but still scores.  A gamble definitely but I’m hoping that the   fixtures and the ability to score without shooting extensively will provide the returns
 Chelsea

substitute player captain Player information

Torres £10m

what can I say I have absolutely no faith in the guy whatsoever, his underlying stats are quite frankly abysmal and I just sigh with exasperation whenever I see him in my team but when it comes down to it he’s the only choice for the captain in this Chelsea DGW1 since RDM’s Hazard comments and the CS fiasco.  Will be switched to Rooney for Utds 3 easy games between GW2-4
Man City
substitute player Player information

Tevez (£9.0m)

Another u turn I hear you say?  Yes Yes I know but the CS, City’s comments about him Ballotellis injury and the stats not being that different meant that the £2.5m difference from Aguero was just too hard to resist (I’m weak I know!)
QPR
substitute player Player information

Cerny (£4.0m)

I had a long look at all the £4.0m keepers to find one I thought may take the No1 spot either through promotion or injury.  in the end i went for the highest scorer last year for the value.  I thought about Gomes with the Friedel position but didn’t want to tie up a Spurs player
Everton
substitute player Player information

Pienaar (£6.5m)

It was a straight choice between  Osman and pienaar and although osmans shooting makes him my kind of player I went for the all round game of Pienaar.  Everton have 7th best opening 6 fixtures
Norwich
substitute player Player information

Tierney (£4.0m)

This is the first of my 2 filler defenders.  Hughton has tightened up defence considerable and they seemed alot mre solid than the cavalry charge of Paul Lambert.  13th on the fixtures but less relevant when its just a filler
West Ham
substitute player Player information

Demel (£4.0m)

2nd best opening 6 fixtures and should play. A filler really.
I hope that stimulates some thought and debate and look forward to everyones comments on my fantasy premier league team.
One point you maybe asking is why I haven’t got more Reading players. In GW3 Reading and Chelsea don’t play that means with 2 transfers and 3 reserves you can have 5 players in and have a full playing compliment in GW3.  Im only putting 4 players from the 2 clubs in so that I can afford 1 selection that doesn’t play or an injury.
Another point is that I have kep £2.5m in the bank rather than £2m for the Torres to Rooney transfer.  This is to just avoid any rouge price changes which may prevent the transfer.  This is especially early on when the traffic on the fantasy premier league site is at its highest

  1. Cerny at 4.0? Why don’t you want two players keepers? That’s a mistake I reckon…

Henderson at 4.0 Is far more likely to challenge Jaaskelainen than Cerny is to challenge Green!

    • Thnaks for the comments seags, I did think about Henderson especially as Bogdan had kept out jaas last year and with jaas being 37 but in the end Ive got Demel in my team and didnt want to double up as 1 west ham defender seemed enough. It is a valid challenge though in retrospect and I may return to it

heres my thought process re a £4.0m back up. While I agree that Cerny wont play there’s no likelihood that any of the £4.0 keepers will play. The question then becomes is it best to invest in a £4.5m back up when you are unlikely to ever use him over the man utd defence that got 19 clean sheets last year or should you invest the £0.5m elsewhere. My reasoning, although it is a personal preference, is that GKs aren’t injured that much and although there is a rotation risk with De Gea there’s the Champs league, FA Cup and Carling cup as rotation options for SAF. I wouldn’t criticise anyone for the safer option its just that Im hoping that I would only use the reserve once or twice a season which doesn’t seem good use of funds. I would rather put the £0.5m in the security of Jagielka over Hibbert or Lescot over Zabaleta which will provide greater returns. I agree with the principle of all members of your squad playing but after alot of thought this was the exception

      cheers keep the comments coming!

    • In short, yes. We have seen SAF experiment playing Rooney as an attacking midfielder in a 4-5-1 previously, and now with RVP up front there’s no reason as to why it shouldn’t work now. I can see him either favouring a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-5-1 with RVP, with Rooney playing in an advanced role. This will see his goals dry up, but his assists potentially rise (but we all know what is worth more points). Also there’s a little problem of who takes pens and free kicks now they’re both in the same side- my gut says rooney but they could very well rotate. The move is making me cut Rooney from my list of must-have’s now!

  2. sorry thats a awful team Cerny will not play ever not sure Tierney will ever ! way to much spend on your defence ! rule number 1 in this game is to pick 15 starters !!! rip it up and start again mate

    • thanks for the comments all are appreciated, even negative ones! While I agree that Cerny wont play there’s no likelihood that any of the £4.0m keepers will play. The question then becomes is it best to invest in a £4.5m back up when you are unlikely to ever use him over the man utd defence that got 19 clean sheets last year or should you invest the £0.5m elsewhere. In terms of defence (and im including GK in this term) DeGea and Cerny cost £1m more than the cheapest 2 playing keepers. United last year got 19 clean sheets and with clean sheets only being 60% at home last year I just cant see that £4.5m rotation giving the same return

City last year returned 17 clean sheets which is should be replicated and is a great return for £6.0m zabaleta the same as say Gutierrez of newcastle.

Ivanovic is the result of a double game week and Chelsea having the 5th best opening 6 fixtures of all teams plus significant defensive improvement under RDM.

Hangeland is a bit of a luxury I agree but he was bought for attacking purposes as much as defensive. In 2010/2011 he scored 6 goals which is up there with the Veraemlens of this world. His purchase is a bit of a gamble that he can replicate that on top of Fulhams 11 clean sheets.

As time goes on I will downgrade the investment in defence as injuries hopefully bring up options like Evans last year but for the moment it seems like the best spread of funds.

Why do you think Tierney wont play? He started the last 2 pre-season games and played more last year than any of the other defenders that are there now apart from martin who is a RB and more expensive. I did check the norwich web and twitter site when I saw your comments and I did see site that hughton today has expressed an interest in LB javier garrido which could cause some issue so if you had seen that before your comments then thanks for the tip.

hope that helps you understand the reasoning behind my team

      cheers

      • Seags, I agree up to yesterday when they got Lazio LB Garrido on loan. Im just a little spooked now to use him. Im probably going to go for clyne or fonte as they seem to rotate home and away ok with Demel

        you guys publish your team?

Cheers and good luck for tomorrow. what time do you have to stay up to in Aus for the 11.30 KO

    • Hi Tobias, it did pain me to leave him out as you say he did score 15 goals for a relegation threatened team last year!

To be fair to myself he is in the players Im considering list article I did yesterday. However he isnt in my team and thats because danny graham has been absolutely tearing it up in pre-season scoring 6 in the last 3 games. Laudrup seems to be making them more attacking at the cost of the defence (which is why ive abandoned then at their average cost of £5.0m)and although Graham goes against my rules in shooting stats, what he lacks in frequency of shooting he makes up in accuracy and % of shots in the box both of which are marginally better than even RVP (although he is a mile of in terms of frequency to be fair). So I didn’t want 2 swansea players in attack in my team despite them having the best fixtures in the opening 6 games. I wanted to start off spreading the risk and so I made a choice between michu and graham and I just couldn’t ignore Grahams form. I would still recommend him to anyone especially as he seems to have been playing in an advanced midfield position behind graham

Hope that helps and please any time you think I have been inconsistent please pull me up on it. hopefully there will be a logic behind it and I can at least explain my thought processes even if you don’t agree!

      • I thought that you might give the ‘do not double up’ reasoning. I agree it is sound thinking to spread the risk given michus more advanced midfield position.

However given the favorable opening 6 fixtures for swansea, the decent preseason form of both players and their relative low price.. both make my initial 15. A risk I know but its the only real punt im taking along with Hazard C in GW1.

Everton traditionally have a slow start to the season, so I am avoiding them. But if I was to go with any of them it would be Fellaini: He was playing in the Hole behind jelavic towards the end of last season and I remember Moyes saying in a post match interview how effective he was being in a more advanced position.

        • 343 FORMATION
          GK: Cech Jaaskelainen [bench]
DEF: Shawcross Vertongehn Vidic bench: Harte Cuellar
MID: Kagawa Park [QPR] Yaya Toure Joe Allen Bench: Lallana
ST Torres VCAPTAIN Aguero CAPTAIN Pogrebnyak
          Team value£99.0m
          In the bank£1.0m
My thoughts: Vertongehn IS it to risky to use Spurs Defenders with AVB in charge great at attacking football and we all saw that he lacked defence side at chelsea
Is Vidic likely im thinking yes as he is are captain and we have a few injured CB”s
And what about Harte and cuellar on the bench is there any other cheaps who would be a better choice
I dont know about Kagawa starting with RVP signing and has been said by SAF he is confident RVP will start monday im thinking we might play 4411 but where will kagawa start ?
Park QPR im feeling it is a big risk quite confident Toure will start as de jong is linked with inter and toure is the better player and what about Joe Allen do you think he will start that Rodgers knows him well
Feeling a risk with Torres but wont pick RVP or rooney as it is yet to be seen if they link up well or it might be a rotation between the 2 Agureo very confident about him but i would pick tevez if i knew there would be no rotation between balotelli and himself and im quite confident about Pogrebnyak he seems to be a popular pick this week
so if you would recommend any changes in the team please help out it seems quite solid but quite a few risks in the team Park Shawcross Joe Allen Lallana Torres Kagawa Harte Vertonghen was thinking swapping A Cole for him so any changes please state so and rate my team as well thanks.

          • Hi good to see so much thought been put in to teams. Heres a few thoughts from me to mull over

GK Im not in favour of having a back up keeper with an elite one for reasons you may have seen in previous Q and A but Chelsea not playing in GW3 gives you no choice. Im going for de Gea and Cerny/Henderson

Im staying away from Stoke as they have very difficult fixtures short and long term. I’m going for Fulham instead. I’ve been a little wary over spurs defence too after the train wreck that was Chelsea.

Harte is not certain to play but theres no guarantee over anyone in the Reading defence but if I had to pick it would be Gorkss or Gunter. Its also very difficult to assess who will play for Sunderland although my money is on Cuellar

Other cheap defenders at £4.0m are Clyne Fonte Nelsen and Demel who have a good chance of playing

I personally wont be going for YYT see my Q and A yesterday part 3 on the subject or Park. Essentially neither are goal scorers enough for me. VDV Bale Michu Pienaar Osman or NZog are my choices

I think Allen will play but plays too deep to get good returns. Lallana is a bit expensive for me as a bench warmer and seems to have a deeper role in pre-season. Guthrie Britton or Whitehead are good £4.5m options as fillers

            hope these few suggestions help

            Good luck

  3. Hi, this is my team, what do you think of it?
    Friedel(Begovic)
    A.cole, Lescott, Kelly(fulham),(Nelsen,MCcartney)
    Nolan,Yaya Toure, Bale, Hazard( Guthrie)
    Torres(C), Graham, Tevez.

    Will swap torres-Rooney after GW1.

  4. O.K. It is not orthodox, but I am putting all my money on Ruddy for the entire season. I believe the total 8.5 spent on GKs allows me to spread extra money elsewhere (and possibly earn more points). I am also worried about Sinclair (who wants out) and LeFondre over another Reading striker.
    What do you think?

    Ruddy (Cerny)
    Cole, Kolarov, Hangeland (Coloccini, Rengel)
    Yaya, Mata, Sinclair, Valencia (Hollett)
Le Fondre, Teves (V), Torres (C)

    100M Spent

Im I setting myself up for failure?

    • not as silly as it sounds as you will get save points galore and norwichs defence will improve this year. having said that i wouldnt do it. Make Rudd your reserve though so if theres an unexpected injury or rotation then youll have the reserve in there.

kolarov wont play unless they play 3-5-2 which is not what the club are saying. zableta is safer after the richards injury
hoilett is more than i would pay for a bench player. guthrie is my favourite

Pgrebnyak is the same price and a better bet than Le Fondre for my money

      cheers

      • THANK YOU FOR THE GOOD COMMENTARY!

YOU MIGHT BE THE MENTOR I NEED. DO YOU HAVE A LEAGUE THAT NEEDS ONE MORE?

        HERE IS MY REVISED TEAM

        HOWARD (RUDDY)

        COLE, ZABALETA, HANGELAND (COLOCCINI, RANGEL)

        YAYA, MATA, GUTHRIE, VALENCIA (SINCLAIR)

        POGREBNYKAY, TEVES (V), TORRES (C)

        .5 M IN THE BANK

        WHAT DO YOU THINK?

OBVIOUSLY TORRES IS A RISK AND IS ONLY CAPTAIN DUE TO THE DOUBLE GAMEWEEK (THIS WILL BE GIVEN TO TEVEZ LATER (WHEN HE BLOWS UP THE EPL)). I AM NOT SURE ABOUT WHETHER VALENCIA WILL START. AND MATA?? I WOULD HAZARD AND KAGAWA BUT NUT SURE OF THE EFFICACY. PLUS, I AM NOT SO SURE THAT I SHOULD TWO PLAYERS FROM SWANSEA (SINCLAIR & RANGEL). LASTLY, SHOULD I SWITCH HOWARD FOR RUDDY FOR GW1? FOR GW3 I WILL NEED TO SWITCH OUT GUTHRIE.

GREAT BLOG. LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU

          • EVERYTHING OK SO FAR. HOWEVER, I AM KICKING MYSELF FOR PUTTING MICHU ON THE BENCH. NOT MENTION, SWITCHING LEFONDRE FOR PEGUBUVAK AT THE LAST MINUTE. HOPE TEVEZ AND TORRES LIGHT IT UP TOMORROW.
