Best cheap defenders for the summer transfer window

The English Premier League is full of top quality defensive talent. However, every talented defender such as Virgil van Dijk or Nicolas Otamendi also comes with a hefty price tag that only a handful of clubs in the world can afford. And it doesn’t matter if you are playing fantasy football or running a real club, buying a top quality defender will always cost you a lot.

Most of the time this doesn’t deter clubs such as Liverpool, Manchester City or Manchester United from making a move for such expensive players and if you like to see the chances that some of these clubs will go after a specific defender in the summer you can see the odds here.

However, betting on famous clubs to snap up expensive defensive purchases almost always comes with low odds, and if you are a punter seeking real profit from predicting where players will move, you should go after defenders which are cheap, but good.

In this article we will list three quality players who also come with low price tags. These players are of significant quality, but because of one reason or another, they are quite cheap at the moment, which means that a top club will almost certainly jump at the chance to sign them. In addition, checking these players out might also be hugely beneficial for your fantasy football team, as they are also quite cheap there as well, but will most definitely improve your points tally.

Alfie Mawson

Mawson is a 24 year old centre back who plays for Swansea. His current market value is around £12 million and rising. However, even at that increasing price Alfie Mawson is an absolute steal in today’s market.

He is a relatively tall defender who is good in the air, but also has quick feet and has a knack for scoring important goals. He has appeared in all of Swansea’s matches in the EPL and has also made significant contributions to their runs in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.

Gary Cahill

Gary Cahill has been a permanent fixture in the Chelsea and England line-up, but has recently fallen from grace and is either on the bench or he is not called up. However, the 32 year old defender still has a lot to offer and considering how Chelsea’s defence has faltered recently he will certainly find his way back into the first team.

At £20 million he is one of the cheapest defenders on the market with a Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup winner’s medals. He also has spades of experience and will be a welcome addition to any top club in England.

Kurt Zouma

Kurt Zouma was one of the best young defenders in the world two years ago, but then he suffered a horrific knee injury which effectively sidelined him for a year. When he came back from injury he was sent on loan to Stoke from Chelsea and there he started showing what he is capable of. At £17 million he is our best cheap defensive option here.
