Introduction
This article consists of a schedule ranking midfielders based on their underlying stats over the season of the season. xG and xA per game are converted to FPL attacking points. Stats are from the excellent free site FBREF Players injured or suspended or with significant gametime risk are excluded from the schedule.
There’s also their FPL points per match as well as their value for money rating. The higher the better. Above 10 is the gold standard
The rankings are purely mathematical and there is no adjustment for fixtures coming up or the amount of additional games or blanks. The attacking players fixture ease schedule is below
Prices are as of the 17th January and stats are all prior to the Brighton v Chelsea game
The Patreon version of the article has Joe’s Transfer Planner and Points Prediction Models highest scoring midfielders over the next 5 gameweeks
The ranking schedule
As I said above the rankings are based on their xG and xA per game converted to FPL attacking points
There is no adjustment to a players rank for fixtures upcoming or blanks or potential doubles. See transfer suggestions below for the best players to transfer in from the schedule
Transfer suggestions for GW23
The fundamentals of looking for players that have a good entry point fixture as well as a good overall fixture ranking in the upcoming 6 gameweeks plus represent overall value for money and consistency of performances are what I’m looking for. The suggestions are not in any particular order
I discuss separately the potential DGW23/DGW24 teams
Jota
It’s impossible to say how good this guy is. Even blanking v Brentford on the left side of the attacking 3 instead of CF he still managed a 6 shot 0.78 xG performance so don’t be put off by 1 assist in his last 3 as that’s very short sighted. Liverpool may have a tricky blank in GW27 but such is Jota’s form with 6 goals and 1 assist in his last 9 starts plus 1 sub appearance that he’s impossible to ignore. He returned a goal or assist in 6 of those 10 games on the back of mind blowing underlying stats. Be aware though that Arsenal play Liverpool in the EFL semi on Thursday so no early transfers which is pretty much the rule anyway
Foden
It’s a case of picking at least 1 Man City attacker and hoping for the best. Foden is my choice as I think he’s exceptional value and can play on the left side of a front 3 and as CF as he did against Chelsea. His consistency returns don’t look outstanding with 11 starts plus 3 as sub and returning a goal or assist in 6 of those games (43%) but it’s still a healthy 5.4 PPM and great underlying stats especially in recent games.
Despite having no postponed games for potential DGW’s the next fixtures of Southampton, Brentford and Norwich next it’s a great entry point and set of fixtures.
Raphinha
Anyone who watched the West Ham v Leeds game in GW22 will have appreciated the class of this guy and how he was so unlucky on his 6 FPL points which could have been so much more
He’s been Mr Consistency this season with 18 starts resulting in a goal or assist in an impressive 55% of those games. He’s also produced value for money underlying stats in 8 of his last 10 appearances which is exceptionally good. The underlying stats are strong from a volume and quality perspective. He also has a decent share of set pieces plus will have pens in Bamford’s absence. He also has the potential for a DGW23/24 as I’ll explain below.
Martinelli
Has come into the side as a starter 7 games ago and has produced 3 goals and 2 assists in that time returning a goal or assist in 4 of those games (57%)
The underlying stats over that period have been exceptional and he’s produced value for money performances in 5 of those 7 fixtures (71%). Seems to have secured the LAM side as well now over Aubameyang and Smith Rowe.
It’s just whether you can handle the blanks as on either side of them there are 3 good fixtures.
Potential DGW23 teams
The games that could be added to GW23 or even GW24 depending on how they view the proximity of dates are
Leeds v Villa, Burnley v Watford, Villa v Burnley.
The double fixtures would look something like this
Leeds – Newcastle H and Villa H
Burnley – Arsenal A and Villa A
OR
Burnley – Arsenal A and Watford H
Watford – Norwich H and Burnley A
Villa – Everton A and Burnley H
OR
Villa – Everton A and Leeds A
For me if Leeds get in GW23 then Raphinha becomes a top pick and a potential captain favourite if the International duties don’t cause a problem for the 2nd fixture. For Villa Coutinho becomes the punt for me. While it’s hard to judge someone on 1 sub appearance plenty have made a case that Coutinho didn’t succeed at Barca for reasons that won’t be an issue at Villa who’s system will bring out the best in him.
For Watford and Burnley there really are little options. Sarr is injured and Cornet is at AFCON. If the doubles are pushed into GW24 though Cornet could be an option as a FPL Mid playing as a striker.
