Introduction

Here’s a few very early drafts to give you some ideas for your FPL teams. They will change prior to the GW1 deadline of August 5 although there will be updated versions before then.

Alex Ball

Alex’s last 8 seasons overall ranks were 27k, 3k, 312k, 523k, 17k, 10k, 28k and 3k

Currently I’m quite happy with this draft.

I like the 8.0 midfield bracket and this draft allows me to get to that and have the players I want to start the season with (Alexander-Arnold, Cancello, James, Salah,  Jesus and Halland). Ignore some of the players (e.g. Sess and Delap) these are place holders and could change to different players come the start of the season but it allows you to see the structure I’m currently thinking.

I’m quite big on Bailey, he feels low risk at 5.0 and looks like he could start the season in the attacking front three for Villa. I like their first 3 fixtures so I’m happy to punt there. Villa fans seem quite big on him as he brings something different to the attack as he’s more direct. No doubt my draft will change before the start of the season but this gives you an idea of where I’m at right now.

Changes from previous draft. Balcombe out for Begovic, Perisic out for Sessegnon, B Williams out for N Williams, Neto out for Bailey, Saint Maximin out for Kulusevski, Greenwood out for Delap.

Here’s the team in it’s current state

Harry Vernon

Harry Vernon’s last 6 seasons are 35k, 86k, 22k, 6k, an incredible 224th and 6k

Getting a good rank in FPL used to be much simpler 7 or so seasons ago. Managers only had one chip then. The wildcard. Playing it well gave you a massive advantage. The best time to play it was around GW30 in time for the DGWs. The key to success was investing some (quite a lot of) time in setting the team for the long haul. One by one rival managers would play their wild card to balance their teams. When the DGWs finally came, you could play your WC and rocket up the rankings.

Now with so many chips available it is a lot harder to gain an advantage by good planning. FPL has become a much more forgiving game. A messed up can be easily fixed by using a wildcard.

This season we have been given an extra WC in the run up to GW17. So, we have 4 opportunities to reset our teams. Before GW1, with WC1, with WC2 and the World Cup wildcard (WCWC). Plus, there are the Free Hit Bench Boost and Triple Captain chips. WC1 has to be used before GW16. GW8, the International Break, could be the obvious time to use it.

Personally, I have always invested a lot of time in setting up my team preseason and play my first WC late. Last season, I held on until GW16, so this will be a new type of season for me. Lots of planning for short bursts of fixtures and good use of chip will be the key to success.

The short-term planning mean we no longer need to worry about goal keeper rotations and we are unlikely to need a deep bench.

In the past 5 seasons I have started with a 442 formation, to make use of our low starting team value. I find that 5 at the back makes the team unbalanced. However, with only 8 GWs or thereabouts to plan for I think it will be a real option this time round. We have the opportunity of playing an early WC to rebalance out the team.

This is my first draft and it will change as we get more information from the preseason friendlies and transfers. It will change, but I will give an idea of my thinking as it stands.

As this stage I am more interested in team structure than specific players.

I will start with the midfield and working outwards.

Salah is a must have. Fantastic fixtures and a great captain option.

I have Neto in my squad as cheap enabler with good starting fixtures.

I am a bit underwhelmed by the midfielders priced less than 8m.

Flexibility is crucial at the start of the season and the ability to get on bandwagons easily.

I see value in having two 8 m midfielders.

Diaz goes straight into my side. The second 8m will currently be Portsmouth born Mason Mount, who is nailed on for a Chelsea side with strong fixtures. I can very easily transfer in Saka, Maddison, Kulusevski or one of the Man City players in the early GWs.

Looking at forwards, Haaland will do well this season. The big question is how quickly will he settle into the Premier League. At 8m Jesus looks a bargain.

At the back, Trent Alexander-Arnold is a shoo in. As Chelsea have strengthened at the back, either James or Chilwell will make my team. Man City has the best defence. I am hoping Walker gets a lot more game time this season. If Cucurella moves to Man City, I will have him instead. With Zinchenko moving to Arsenal, he is another great option. Finally, I complete my defence with a cheap rotating pair of White and Castagne.

Finally, in goal Mendy looks great value at 5m. There’s no reason to have a back up keeper.

On my watchlist is Southampton’s Bazunu who is a great showstopper.

I have 0.5m in the bank for flexibility.

Finally, my plan for the summer is to log off FPL for the next fortnight and enjoy the sun and not look at my team again until after the Charity Shield.

Have a great summer.

changes from my second draft

Ederson, Trippier, Martinelli
out for Meslier, James, Rashford

With James being the third most owned defender and Mendy being the most owned GK and managers even doubling up on both or Chilwell me not having a Chelsea Defender is way too much of a risk. Adding that to the risk of going without Salah! Meslier have great short term fixtures so he makes the cut for now!

Rashford keeps scoring and assisting in Ten Hags United and if Ronaldo is not sold or is even more late in pre season I can see Rashford as a great option up until GW5 when Europe starts and rotation with it! He is also a 0.5 more expensive than Martinelli so make the switch to a 7+ midfielder that will emerge more easy!

I don’t like the 5-2-3 formation as it is not flexible at all! but going Kane to Son requires a 0.5 downgrade somewhere meaning I have to lose either James or Cash.

Toyed with Cash/ Digne to Walker but come GW5 I will need a few players without Europe for certainty of starts!
