Gameweek 4 was another disappointment. Over the last three Gameweeks I’ve left 55 points on the bench, and that’s a big reason why my team is falling behind. I’ve got literally every 50/50 call wrong. Flip those decisions and I’d clearly be in the top 100k, but I’m not.
It’s still early in the season and my luck has to change at some point. I remember being around the 4 million mark a couple of years ago and still finishing at 21k overall, so I’ve learnt not to give up. If you’re in the same position, don’t worry, just keep at it.
Moving onto this week, I still like my team and I’m trusting it moving forward. I know plenty of elite managers are looking to bring in players I already own given the upcoming fixtures, so it’s well set up. I just need to pick the right starting eleven. I’m starting Gvardiol this time after his 11 point haul sat on my bench last week, and Thiaw has a great home fixture against Hull, so I’m going with a 3-4-3. No changes this week, saving my three transfers going into the international break. Haaland takes the armband for now with MGW as vice, though that could change closer to the deadline.
Good luck to all.

Hello FFGeek patrons, and welcome to my GW5 write-up. We come off a weekend where some unusual events affected my rank both negatively (looking at you, Raya penalty save) and positively (thank you, Pascal Gross, for the 17-point haul).
It turns out that the answer to the question of whether to use my Free Hit or make transfers to tidy up my team was to do absolutely nothing at all! However, we cannot be outcome-based and the main reason my original team scored so highly was that it ended up playing Gvardiol and captaining Joao Pedro. In reality, all of my plans involved benching Gvardiol and captaining Palmer, so there was never really a scenario where I was going to benefit from those points.
Overall, I am just relieved to have saved the Free Hit, with my current team comfortably outscoring the proposed plan and scraping a green arrow. That leaves me with both the Free Hit and Wildcard still available while sitting at a decent early rank, although at this stage I don’t see an obvious reason to use either of them anytime soon.
Squad Assessment
I have a little more time on my hands this week and, with the three-week international break looming, it feels like a good opportunity to take a deeper look at the squad and assess where things currently stand.
Goalkeepers
Verbruggen & Kinsky are both ticking along nicely, with two clean sheets apiece and a smattering of save points across the opening four GWs. Looking ahead, apart from GW8, at least one of them has a decent fixture every week for the foreseeable future. The rotation is working as intended and I am more than happy to stick with the pair.
Defenders
I have previously raised concerns around Calafiori & Gvardiol, primarily because I expected their minutes to become an issue at some point. So far, that simply hasn’t happened and both continue to deliver at either end of the pitch. My stance therefore remains unchanged: keep them until there is clear evidence of a significant rotation threat.
Konsa is the newest addition and looks an obvious long-term hold. I expect almost every engaged manager to own him within the next few weeks, as it’s hard to say no to a nailed <5mil defender from the best defensive team in the league. Muharemovic is also proving to be exactly the FPL asset I hoped for – part of a decent defence, great Defcons and some attacking threat.
Finally, I will admit that Diop is no longer the optimal 4.0mil option, with the Hull defenders currently looking better. However, I definitely won’t be using a transfer on my fifth defender, so there is nothing to do here. Overall, the defence is feeling pretty settled.
Midfielders
Gross sits in the same category as Muharemovic in that he has been everything I could have hoped for and more. No player has scored more FPL points over the opening four GWs, which is quite the return from a player who started the season at 5.5mil. Dewsbury-Hall and Palmer are more recent purchases, but I expect both to be strong and consistent options in their respective price brackets.
This is where we finally get to a couple of concerns. Szoboszlai has ticked over okay, but his only attacking return has come from the penalty spot, while Ndiaye’s minutes are far from secure following his move to Man City. Ndiaye is comfortably the bigger problem and will be the priority sell, although GW5 probably isn’t the time to do it with Foden suspended and Doku likely to remain out.
Instead, I am considering dealing with both midfield spots in GW6 as part of a combination move to bring in Saka using the 2.6mil ITB. That would solve the Ndiaye problem, move on from Szoboszlai and add another premium asset without needing to restructure elsewhere.
Forwards
Haaland = main captain option, Joao Pedro = most underpriced player in the game, Calvert-Lewin = nailed xG monster at a budget price. Yeh, I’m happy here.

GW 4 Review
A high-scoring week with lots of players hitting double figures. As such 8/11 returners was only good enough for a very small green arrow at my 7-figure rank and would have been a red arrow had I been higher up the league.
Things were actually looking good on Saturday night with my rank at the time sitting around 600k. Schade was the star of my week, 15 points at 6% owned. Some luck involved for sure – Brentford only notched 0.79 xG for the match and the second goal was a gift from Bournemouth keeper Petrovic, but I’ll take it. My 2 Transfers In – Palmer and Konsa both had modest returns, Palmer in particular was a little disappointing after handing him the armband. There was even another clean sheet for Kinsky.
Things quickly went south on Sunday though as I was punished for not owning any Brighton assets in their 5-0 thumping of Coventry, the salt in the wounds being 0 points for Van Ewijk who I’d given a rare start to ahead of Maguire. Gross had been in most of my pre-season drafts but ironically, I’d decided to shelve him in the last week of pre-season in favour of Schade! You can’t have them all I guess, but the Brighton result coupled with a Bruno blank in a controversial Manchester derby undid all the progress from Saturday and put me on a red arrow going into Monday night. Indeed it could of been worse had VAR not chosen to overlook Bruno’s bit of petulance. It did spark Father Ted/ Bishop Brennan comments from my wife while we were watching it for those of you who have seen that particular episode!
Things did pick up a bit on Monday night and after Calvert-Lewin’s double was downgraded to a goal and an assist, I was still on a red arrow until Newcastle’s late goal killed the Leeds clean sheet and nudged DCL further up the bonus. A small green then in the end.
It’s been a slow start to the season then and although it’s been a little frustrating to miss out on a few hauls and see other teams forging ahead after deploying chips early, I’m not too worried. We’re a very small way into a long campaign – there’s plenty of time to knuckle down and make up the ground. The bad news for GW5 though is, you’ve guessed it…Rob rant time….it’s yet another Friday deadline. My favourite!
