Gameweek one review:

Well we are off and running, with lots of drama and talking points on the opening weekend, as you would expect. It’s great to be back !! I hope you had a good one ??

Champions Man City got their title defence off to a winning start with a comfortable victory at West Ham, with Erling Haaland immediately stealing the show with an impressive brace. Arsenal and Chelsea are off the mark too, as are Spurs who hit four goals but bizarrely Kane and Son were not amongst them as Kulusevski grabbed the headlines.

Liverpool were surprisingly held to a draw by new boys Fulham, with Salah and Nunez both on form, but Mitrovic caught the eye with his double. Man Utd had a horror start at home to Brighton. Newly promoted Bournemouth had a great win, as did Leeds and Newcastle, with the Foxes and Bees sharing the spoils.

In the battle of the five premiums, being on Salah and Haaland was the winning formula, so the popular template got it spot on, as Kane Son and De Bruyne came up short. If you listen carefully, you can hear the stampede of managers making that Kane to Haaland move now, which is necessary to avoid being priced out with nearly a week to go.

My GW1 score and rank.

I am happy with a solid start with 6/11 returners. Mo was captain reliable as always, I got the Haaland v Kane call right, plus Martinelli and three clean sheets brought me a decent 72 points.

That’s a Gameweek rank of just over 1M which is a solid place to be. Any individual gameweek rank of inside 1M will usually result in a green arrow, wherever you sit.

I wrapped myself in the popular template of highly owned players and it served me well. It was always going to protect me from the dreaded bad start that’s hard to come back from. I owned the seven most popular players and every player over 30% owned and it did it’s job and gave me a solid foundation to stay firmly in the pack.

The average score of the so called Elite Managers was 67 points so to outscore it by 5 points is a great start. These are the managers that matter and the ones that will be up there when it really matters. It’s always a great benchmark so it’s very nice to be ahead of that significant curve.

My GW1 talking points:

Sticking the captaincy on Salah is always the safe thing to do and so it proved as he yet again scored heavily on the opening day as he always does.

There is no doubt that I got lucky with Kane blanking v Southampton in a four goal spree, especially with Son only managing a solitary assist too. The Haaland v Kane decision split the FPL community and I have to say I expected Kane to win the GW1 battle. But my eyes were all over that GW2 City v Bournemouth fixture and I simply didn’t want to pre book that transfer, knowing I would have to hit it early.

I valued the option to roll the transfer in GW2, to have two frees in GW3, and that advantage of jumping on the bandwagons in GW3 when two transfers gets you any player in the game. So not only did Haaland v Kane bring an 11 point win, it also put me a transfer up too. I never expected a Haaland double so it could not have worked out any better.

Going Ramsdale over the Leicester keeper pair or the Leicester / Brighton rotation started well. It’s unusual for Arsenal to keep a clean sheet and Ramsdale to not pick up saves and bonus but I will take the six pointer.

Martinelli proved to be the 6M bargain we hoped for as he increased his prospects of nailing his place in the team. He should have scored twice. Cancelo and James were amongst the bonus points as my faith in the much maligned pre season Chelsea defence was rewarded.

I am not concerned about the Trent Alexander-Arnold and Robertson blanks. Lots of points will follow. The significant call was Robertson v Luis Diaz for that third Liverpool place and that particular battle ended level. It looks like the answer to Robertson or Diaz might turn out to be Darwin Nunez !!

It also seems like the answer to Neto or Bailey debate might be Dewsbury Hall. How typical that the in form pre season darlings came up short when it mattered.

I actually benched Bailey, which led to much discomfort. He ended up being my biggest rank threat ahead of Kane !! I think I made a mistake of benching him but playing Neto and Perisic. But I got away with it and wasn’t punished. Very fortunate.

Probably my only blip was Perisic. It was widely expected he would be benched and he was. I thought long and hard about selling him to Kyle Walker and that cost me a few extra points. Whether or not it was the better long term call though is a different matter.

So what next:

There is a good chance I will roll the transfer to give me a powerful two frees in GW3 to take advantage of the popular bandwagons with twice as much information as we have now.

I might consider selling Perisic to Walker. City have some great defensive fixtures ahead, starting with Bournemouth at home. Walker looks nailed for now. I have margin to do that move.

My only question is whether I keep faith in the reasons Perisic is in my team. Namely his 160 career goals. The sky is the limit once he gets back in the team. Those without him could well bring him in for GW3. So having made my bed, I might just lie in it. He will become first choice. Seeing Sessegnon and Emerson smashing it v Southampton can only increase belief that an attacking spurs wing back carries absolutely huge potential.

There are no other moves I am considering this week, subject to injuries of course.

My GW2 set up:

If I do Perisic to Walker, I will have the tough choice I am going to get most weeks of Bailey v Neto for the bench.

If I roll, I might play Perisic and still have that dilemma. Or I might bench Perisic v Chelsea and play both Bailey and Neto.

Rick Porter

Rick’s last 6 seasons ORs were 38k, 1k, 29k, 1k, 30k and 2k.

GW1 points: 73 (15 Top managers average 70) Total points: 73, Overall Rank: 897k, arrow: n/a   Team Value: £100.0m

As solid a start as I could have hoped. I owned the right two premiums, grabbed three clean sheets, and even got a goal from a budget mid. It wasn’t all great, of course. It felt unlucky to not get anything from Diaz considering he missed a sitter, hit the post, and had a goal ruled out, but the clean sheet wipe-out meant Robertson owners didn’t fare any better.

A blank for Jesus is largely redundant as his ownership is so high and good fixtures mean it’s not worth considering moving him on just yet. Neto gets a pass because of his price. The only real issue I have is Perisic. Him not starting wasn’t ideal, but I’m still sure that once he’s fully fit he’ll be on everyone’s wish list. I’ll stick with him for now and see how he goes against Chelsea.

Getting the big calls right

Going ‘No Salah’ was never a consideration for me, so my biggest win was landing on the right side of Kane/Haaland debate. Haaland’s ownership was huge a few weeks back, but it plummeted 14% once the seeds of doubt had been sown online and managers began tinkering him out. Non-owners now have the unenviable choice of doubling down on their Kane decision and miss Haaland against Bournemouth or making an early transfer. That may also mean a -4 now, as prices have already shifted and a straight swap for Kane isn’t doable (unless you kept money back).

Missing the GW1 points is one thing, but not having a FT at your disposal is a hindrance when anything can happen over the course of a week. Don’t get me wrong, I could certainly see the appeal in going with a tried and tested forward like Kane (who somehow managed to avoid being involved in four goals!), but the transfer headache that would inevitably follow ultimately made my decision for me. Luckily it worked out.
