Introduction
Here’s FFGeek’s Clay Van Doren’s World Cup Fantasy Team plus a discussion on strategy, transfers and Captains. Key elements to my approach: Boosters
Plan my wildcard Round 3 expecting material rotation for top clubs who have secured exit from the Group Stage (ala Spain and Germany with two relatively easy fixtures)
Means I am only targeting my selection for teams for the first two Rounds
Plan to play Max Captain in Final or Semi-final round when less chance to swap between players during the Round (as only 1-2 games)
Alternatively, play my Max Captain chip in Round 2 as historically the highest scoring (2.9 goals per game vs. 2.1 on Gameweek 1)
Assume Round 1 teams are warming up, round 2 running up scores to be able rest players in Round 3
Target 12th man for Round 2 – likely Vini Jr, Olise or Kane?
Key elements to my approach: Player Strategy
Get mix of players playing different days of the week such that can swap out after played if have lower score
Will target cheap sub 5.0% owned defenders (fullbacks) (with +2 bonus potential) who play early in Round 1 and Round 2 as create option to swap them out for more expensive players playing later
Approach shifts me away from Columbia and cheap options given play at the end of Round 1 and Round 2
Will prioritise Spain and Germany with 5-6 players given easy Round 1 and Round matches (think everyone will be doing this)
Initial Team
Start with my five Spain and Germany players (I can only land initially on 2 Spanish with Yamal hurt):
Although France may have close to as easy competition (possible we are overrating Senegal’s chances against this French Team but why take the risk)
Cucurella, Oyarzabal, Kimmich, Wirtz and Musiala
Cheap fullbacks capable of the Scouting Bonus +2 and rotating goalkeepers:
- Scouting bonus and clean sheets are the aim for defenders and goalkeepers
- Scouting bonus of +2 is close to the value of an assist +3
- Ordonez (15 June), Elvedi, Widmer (13 June) vs Kimmich 14 June and Cucurella 15 June
- Others considered – Wesley (injured), Dest (not much chance of clean sheets), Varela
- Currently on Gunn (3.6M) and Galindez
One last roll of the dice / sweeper – Columbia plays last in both Rounds 1 and 2
One player from Columbia to come in for whoever has underperformed to date in the Round – either defender, Diaz, or James
Key decisions:
- Haaland vs. Kane – Haaland for Round 1
- 5th Midfielder – with two expensive Forwards, the 5th mid is difficult now that Karl is no longer an option for Germany – Have 6.5M to spend — Nusa
Captain Rotation Plan (stopping once get a score of 10+):
- Elvedi (13 June) to Wirtz (14 June) to Oyarzabal (15 June) to Mbappe (16th) Haaland (16 June late) to Bruno (17 June) to Sanchez (18 June)
Plan Round 2: Path to 2 France, 2 Brazil
Swap in Kane for Haaland
Swap in Doue for Nusa
12th Man – Vini Jr / Olise
Round 1: No Boosters, Stuck with Mbappe and Haaland, 5 Spain/Germany
