Here’s Stefan with his article on who are the candidates for PFA young player of the year in English football.

Who are the candidates for PFA young player of the year in English football?

The PFA young player of the year award is a prestigious award for players who are 23 or under in English football at the start of the season.  Players are eligible whether they are English or not and indeed the current holder is Manchester City’s Leroy Sane.

Previous winners include Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Robbie Fowler and Dele Alli.  Winners have always been from the top division with Ryan Sessegnon last season the first player to be nominated from outside the top division. These are just some of the leading players this season and if you use a bet365 promo code you can see the odds of the various candidates.

The leading contenders

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling turned 24 in December but he is still eligible.

It’s hard to describe how good a season Raheem Sterling is having.  He’s been a key component in City’s seemingly inexorable ride to the quadruple.

He completed the Premier League “double double” of 10 goals and 10 assists after 26 gameweeks.   A 13 minute hat trick against Watford has followed since and it means he now has 15 goals and 11 assists in the premier league and 19 goals and 16 assists in 40 appearances overall. As of gameweek 30 he was first in the FFGeek form tables for midfielders.

It’s hard to believe that his phenomenal record last season of 23 goals and 17 assists in all competitions could be under threat but it’s looking more than realistic he will improve on that.

Marcus Rashford

On the other side of Manchester, Marcus Rashford has gone from perennial sub and  being described by Mourinho as “the reason I always play Lukaku” to key component in the front line of Manchester United.

The key to Rashford’s season, like many others in United’s colours, has been the change of manager to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Rashford currently sits on 12 goals and 9 assists from 38 appearances in all competitions.  His defining moment this season has been his ice cool penalty against PSG in the final minutes to see United through to the quarter finals of the Champions League.

Trent Alexander Arnold

Defenders very rarely win PFA young player of the year with Gareth Bale, Kyle Walker and Tony Adams the only real defensive winners since Kevin Beattie won the inaugural award in the 1973-74 season.   However, with Virgil Van Dijk one of the favourites to win the PFA player of the year could this be a unique double for defender and club?  After all Alexander Arnold has been described by Gary Lineker as “too good a footballer to be a full back”.  Only his team mate and fellow full back Andrew Robertson has more assists as a defender than Alexander Arnold.  He also is a potent dead ball and goal scoring threat although only has the 1 goal so far this campaign.

Reuben Neves

Wolves have certainly been one of the pleasant surprise packages of the Premier League season and at the heart of the team is 22 year old Portuguese central midfielder Reuben Neves.  His 4 goals and 3 assists in 31 games in all competitions makes him a big outsider when you consider the contributions from the likes of Raheem Sterling.  However to dismiss him would be to dismiss the massive contribution his organisation and passing has had on Wolves sensational season.

He’s been rumoured to be one of Pep Guardiola’s options to replace Fernandinho, which given Fernandinho’s importance to Manchester City, is a massive vote of confidence in his ability
