The big talking point ahead of ChampMan FPL DGW17 seems to be whether to triple captain your Manchester United (MUN) assets and Ruud Van Nistelrooy (RVN) in particular. I’ll share some pros and cons with you and reveal the conclusion that Alex and me have reached and what we will do ourselves. These next points will focus on triple captaining RVN.

Pros

MUN is an actual beast of a team in this game and looks to be in this sim as well. RVN is the top scorer with 10 goals from 15 games. What’s almost as important in this game though is that he has the highest avg rating out of every player with 8.33 which means he is very likely to return you bonus points.

RVN’s effective ownership this GW will most likely be huge, can we expect numbers up to 200%!?. If he hauls and you’re not on him for at least the captaincy it can hurt your rank big time!

MUN face Leicester in the first part of the DGW. They have the 2nd worst defence in the league so far in the same having conceded 34 goals from 17 games, only Southampton have done worse with 35 goals conceded in 17 games. Leicester are also on a really poor run defensively and has conceded 12 goals in the last 4 games. Meanwhile MUN has scored 10 goals during the same time.

In the second part of the DGW MUN play Middlesbrough who are a better side defensively and all around. Can we treat this game as bonus for RVN!?

Our sim guru on Champ man FPL is Luke (@ffscout_luke on Twitter, a must follow if you play this game!), he ran 20 sims against the two oppositions and here are the numbers he came up with:

Cons

The fact that MUN faces Leicester as one of the opponents does play both in RVN’s favour and at the same time may work against him. So far we’ve been fairly lucky with rotation with ”big players” in games against lesser teams. Here’s where team reputation comes into play (again we recommend to check out @ffscout_luke who has brilliantly explained team reputation. Will this be the GW where the big players will be rotated!?

Since ”everyone” will at least captain RVN will there actually be a big upside in putting your TC chip on him!? Let’s say he scores a brace against Leicester with the additional three bps and he blanks but gets a couple of bonus points against Boro that would mean 17 points. You would therefore ”only” have a 17 point edge on the others who are captaining RVN. Will it be worth it when there might be a chance to put it on someone else at a later stage?

Conclusion

We will play our TC chip on RVN this GW! For us the pros outweigh the cons. We also would definitely back the strategy of not playing your TC chip on RVN because you mean the upside won’t be as big. But if you do this there is no point in putting the TC chip on Viduka for their DGW23 against Villa and Derby. Here you will have the same argument that most engaged managers will most likely own and captain Viduka for this GW as well so the edge won’t be too big this GW either. If you chose not to put the TC chip on RVN this GW we believe that you have to go «all in» on the chip and go for the «not so obvious» choice, that won’t have the huge ownership and captain numbers in that given GW but still has a huge upside.

Here’s a few examples: Veron or Silvestre TC this GW17, Harte or Kewell DGW23. If you go down this route we’d recommend to go for one of these high risk/high reward players since you’re already «risking» it by not putting it on RVN.

Good luck with your decisions!
