Why this could be Chelsea’s season in the Premier League?

Although it’s still very early in the season to speculate about who could pick up the Premier League title Chelsea are among many pundits choices to challenge the favourites and current champions Manchester City.

So does Chelsea have what it takes to repeat their Premier League title-winning performance of 2016/17?

Maurizio Sarri’s team have made a very strong start to their campaign, and after ten games, Chelsea are still unbeaten and are just two points behind the joint league-leaders Manchester City and Liverpool.  Only Manchester City have scored more goals than Chelsea and only Liverpool and Manchester City have conceded less.  Chelsea are currently well placed in 3rd to challenge the 2 favourites.

Whilst there was plenty of concern about the arrival of new head coach, Maurizio Sarri, at the club from Napoli in July, it seems that he is having a much better time than his predecessor, Antonio Conte.

Sarri is well-known for his meticulous approach to match preparation.  A string of strong results like their 3-2 win against Arsenal shows that the Italian manager’s tactics are working well. In addition to this, there’s a team spirit at Stamford Bridge that was sorely missing in their relatively mediocre 2017/18 campaign.

Chelsea were perilously close to being beaten at home by Manchester United in gameweek 9, but Ross Barkley’s 96th minute equaliser revealed that this is a team who will do whatever it takes to get that all-important point.  The fact that Barkley also starred in the win over Burnley at the weekend showed how the squad depth has also improved.

In order to see whether Chelsea could go the distance, we checked into the betting resource betting.com.ng to see what the biggest bookmakers think about the team’s chances, and it’s no surprise to find that Maurizio Sarri’s team are just behind the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool in the betting odds.

So what do Chelsea have to do to leapfrog the league leaders? Whilst Eden Hazard is currently the Premier League top scorer with an impressive seven goals, there’s a widely-held perception that other Chelsea strikers could do more. The French star, Olivier Giroud, hasn’t hit the back of the net this season, and although Alvaro Morata has scored 2 goals in his last 3 appearances there’s still question marks over his ability to lead Chelsea to the title.

As a result, there has been of speculation about who Stamford Bridge’s next big money signing could be. Interestingly, it seems as though Sarri has his eyes on Serie A football to deliver the next star Chelsea striker. First choice could be the Inter Milan forward, Mauro Icardi, who has been in great form for his club, although a slightly cheaper option could be to sign Genoa’s in-from striker, Krzysztof Piatek, who is currently the top scorer in the Serie A.

Big signings could be all the more important as those rumours about Eden Hazard making a potentially record-breaking move to Real Madrid don’t seem to be going away. Chelsea face Crystal Palace and Everton in the next 2 weeks.  However the real test will come with matches against Tottenham at the end of November and then 3 matches after that the real test of Manchester City on the 8th December.
