draft fantasy football comes to fantasy football geek

This season I’m partnering with draftfantasyfootball.co.uk to provide stats and advice to bring draft fantasy football to FFGeek.  I’ll also be competing in a FFGeek mini league.  In this article I’ll give a basic rundown on the concept and the rules plus a link to sign up

The concept

Here’s the basic concept.  In Draft Fantasy Football each manager in your league of say, 11 managers, picks a unique squad of players in what is known as “the draft“. The draft progresses turn by turn until all squads are filled up.  You pick a lineup each week and score points based on your teams player performances.

There’s no salary cap and only 1 manager can own a player.  So if you own Kane no one else can.  Once the season starts you can refresh your squad through trading players with other managers, transferring in free agents and transferring in players who become available through waivers (more on that later)

This season I’m partnering up with draftfantasyfootball.co.uk to bring this concept to the site.  There is a detailed rules section on the site but here’s an overview

Getting started

Getting started.  The first thing to do is go to the site using this draftfantasyfootball link.  You can then create or join a league.  A league will involve up to 16 managers.  League options are classic points scoring or head to head.  The leagues are also public or private.  Initial squads of 15 players are chosen in the draft which I’ll come to in a minute.  As I said, the squad will be 15 players and set up like this:

Between 1 – 2 Goalkeeper
Also between 3 – 6 Defenders
Between 3 – 6 Midfielders
Between 3 – 6 Forwards

Each week your team will be 11 players in the usual formations with a bench of 4 players of subs to come on if needed.   There is live scoring.

The draft

I imagine the most common form of draft is the snake draft.  A draft time is picked and then there are 15 rounds of a draft where each manager picks a player in turn until each managers 15 player squad is full.  The manager who picks first in round 1 picks last in round 2 and so on as the draft pick order is reversed after each round to make it fair.  If you don’t make it to the draft then the site will auto pick your team based on their ranking.  However, if you’re very efficient you can make an auto pick list yourself in advance to cater for such a situation.

There is also an auction draft which is a premium feature where you have a certain budget and bid for players in an auction.

Points scoring

Points scoring is very similar to fantasy premier league based on goals, assists and clean sheets.  There’s also a similar bonus system although there is an alternative option.  Captains aren’t a feature of this game

Transferring players

There are 3 principle ways to freshen up your team:

Trades

You can offer any other manager a trade. However the trade has to involve the same number of players and the end result of the trade has to be a team which conforms with team structure rules

Free agents

There will be a number of these players floating around.  I expect a few newly promoted players to be in this category.  These can be picked up at anytime on a first come first served basis although you have to keep to squad structure rules including dumping someone from your team to keep the numbers straight.

Waiver

This is probably the most difficult concept.  As I understand it new players to the league and those dropped from managers teams will go onto “waivers” for a short minimum time.  Managers can then decide whether they want him or not and put in a waiver request to take him into their team.  Twice a week those waivers are processed.  The player will go to the manager who is currently top of the continually rotated waiver list.  Managers will again have to ensure their teams are within the rules structure and dump another player to make way.

Additional draftfantasyfootball.co.uk features

Lightning draft

Lightning drafts are one week leagues that cost to enter with the winner taking the prize pool minus the commission fee.   You can draft a new team each week.

Challenges

This is where you select a bet amount and challenge one of the other managers in your league. If both parties accept, the manager with the most points at the end of the game week takes the pot minus the commission fee.

What will FFGeek be doing for draft fantasy football?

I’ll be in a league and doing a weekly article on my teams progress.  There will also be within that article, advice and stats on players.  I’m looking forward to it as a completely new way of playing the game.  I have in the past played the various American sports versions and found them entertaining.  You do have to be on your toes to get the best free agents and waivers
