It’s worth noting that I haven’t seen Saturdays friendly matches and this article doesn’t take them into account.  I will update the article closer to Saturday the 8th August.

Chadli

The Spurs midfielder is a fantastic goal scoring midfilder with excellent returns from last season.  These are also backed up by excellent shooting stats showing that it’s definitely no fluke.  His lack of defensive resolve means  he was dropped in patches by Pochettino who lives by defensive work rate but he played the last 12 games of the season and has featured sufficently in preseason to have confidence of gametime.  Fixtures could be better but he can return against any team as his goal and assist fantastic performance against Chelsea in the 5-3 win showed.  The fixtures are reasonable and he has the proven returns to have faith in him.  There are is just a residual gametime risk after being dropped for periods last season

First 6 fixtures:

Man Utd (A)
Stoke (H)
Leicester (A)
Everton (H)
Sunderland (A)
Crystal Palace (H)

Milner

The Liverpool midfielder was a bit part player last season for Man City mainly playing on the right but his returns considering that were actually excellent. That plus Liverpools fixtures are the reason he’s got this ranking.  However there is a reasonable amount of uncertainty there.  Depending on what formation Rodgers decides to play on the way to the game in his car,  Milner will either play in the 2 of 4-2-3-1 or the midfield 3 of 4-3-3.  The players who succeed from those position are fairly rare (The Ramseys, YYTs and Cazorlas of this world) and they tend to do so without any meaningful shots in the box stats.  This makes them a fairly unpredicatable lot and coupled with him being at a new club raises the risk further.  However his pre-season has been good and with the fixtures there’s a decent amount of potential there.

Stoke (A)
Bournemouth (H)
Arsenal (A)
West Ham (H)
Man Utd (A)
Norwich (H)

Tadic

The Southampton midfielder is more of a provider than a goal scorer which to me is a little the wrong way round given the points and bonus award differential.  However it looks like he will have pen duties and has a decent share of the set pieces.  The Europa League places some gametime rotation risk but we are only talking about the early fixtures while rather than a whole season committment to the player.  However even in these fixtures rotation is a risk.  Great fixtures though.

Newcastle (A)
Everton (H)
Watford (A)
Norwich (H)
West Brom (A)
Man Utd (H)

Jeremaine Lens

Here’s the first of our new players to fantasy premier league.  Sunderlands 27 year old Dutchman has played 30 games and scored 8 goals for his country.   The left winger got 5 goals and 10 assists in 21 games for Dynamo Kiev last season.  He’s started pre-season well and with Sunderland having excellent starting fixtures looks a good bet in this value group.  The question will be whether Sunderland can score goals as a team which could be the inhibiting factor

Leicester (A)
Norwich (H)
Swansea (H)
Aston Villa (A)
Spurs (H)
Bournemouth (A)

Matt Ritchie

The Bournemouth Right midfielder had a sensational season in the Championship with 15 goals and 17 assists for Bournemouth.  He has his teams set piece and penalty responsibility.  Bournemouth have a good first 6 fixtures and he seems to be the key to the team.  The question though is whether he will become a disaster Taarabt or a successful Charlie Adam.  That has been difficult to predict but at least you’re gambling with good fixtures.

Aston Villa (H)
Liverpool (A)
West Ham (A)
Leicester (H)
Norwich (A)
Sunderland (H)

Henderson

The Liverpool midfielder is in a similar position to Milner  in the double pivot or the midfield 3 of 4-3-3  He does have some set piece responsibility and should be on pens unless they’re given to Benteke.  The home fixtures are good though.

Stoke (A)
Bournemouth (H)
Arsenal (A)
West Ham (H)
Man Utd (A)
Norwich (H)

Georginio Wijnaldum

The 24 year old CM/AM Dutch International has played 20 games for his country scoring 3 goals.  Last season for PSV he played 33 games for 14 goals and 4 assists.  He’s played well in pre-season.  The negative is that Newcastles fixtures are not good at all but it’s whether that quality he undoubtedly has can over ride it.

Southampton (H)
Swansea (A)
Man Utd (A)
Arsenal (H)
West Ham (A)
Watford (H)

Steven Berguis

The 23 year old Dutch right winger joins Watford after a season where he scored 11 goals and 5 assists in 22 games for AZ Alkmaar last season.  The question is whether he’s had enough time to acclimatise and integrate to start in GW1.  The other issue is the fixtures which are tough.  It’s just whether you think these are over ridden by his quality

Everton (A)
West Brom (H)
Southampton (H)
Man City (A)
Swansea (H)
Newcastle (A)

Mahrez

This is really about good fixtures and the prospect of him playing as a CAM which he did in parts last season.

Sunderland (H)
West Ham (A)
Spurs (H)
Bournemouth (A)
Aston Villa (H)
Stoke (A)

Ashley Young

Should start unless Depay is moved left to accomodate another striker signing.  Was a great disappointment last season after becoming a bit of a pre-season bandwagon.  Has assist potential but from a wide position will find it difficult to score.  Good fixtures though.

Spurs (H)
Aston Villa (A)
Newcastle (H)
Swansea (A)
Liverpool (H)
Southampton (A)
