Man City vs Watford £1.10 – Aguero, De Bruyne, Sterling

Arsenal vs A Villa £1.40 – Aubameyang, Pepe

The odds are for £1 invested up to £2.40. They assume the player starts and ignores assist potential.

£1.44 – Aguero

£1.57 – Sterling

£1.65 – Aubameyang

£1.91 – Pepe

£2.00 – Kane, Ashley Barnes, Pukki

£2.10 – Vardy

£2.15 – Bernardo Silva, Abraham, Salah

£2.20 – Wood

£2.25 – Ings, Che Adams

£2.30 –  Sadio Mane

£2.37 – Haller, Martial, Rashford

The Captain Poll results

The captain poll asks who will be your captain?  The Poll went up on Thursday morning so people voting would have known that Sterling played the 90 minutes vs Shaktar and Aguero was on the bench.  Obviously Aubameyang played on Thursday evening but I imagine people would assume he would play given the opposition was strong in Frankfurt and Lacazette is injured.

Sterling v Aguero v Aubameyang stats

Gametime

Everyones favourite subject

So Sterling played 90 mins vs Shaktar while Aguero was on the bench.  That’s after Sterling played 90 v Norwich.  He has played 90 in every game in the PL and started both games in the International break. However there are future resting points for him vs Preston in the whatever it’s called and who cares anyway cup midweek and then vs Dinamo Zagreb in the UCL next week.  So 5 points behind Pep may want him to play given there are obvious rest points ahead.  It’s difficult to say who is his direct replacement with Sane injured and questionable whether Mendy is fit enough to provide the left sided width.  Mahrez and Bernardo have played RW.  David Silva has been a CM.  The same for De Bruyne.  I guess Foden or Jesus could do it but it seems a bit of a stretch.

Aguero didn’t play for Argentina over the International break and obviously didn’t start v Shaktar.  If you were looking for negatives you would say he does have the Copa America in the tank unlike Sterling who had the summer off.  He also has a direct replacement in Jesus.  That seems unlikely to affect his starting position given he was on the bench in UCL but it does give Pep a ready made sub option.

Aubameyang played v Frankfurt which I guess is the toughest group game so no surprise.  Given the result last week and the injury to Lacazette it would be a major surprise if he didn’t start as CF.

All this is caveated by the fact that neither manager are particularly predictable.  I’ve also written ths before the press conferences but given the fact that both managers say next to nothing of use to FPL managers then I would be surprised if we got anything of note

Sterling Stats

Sterling at home in 18/19 starting vs non top 6 sides

fantasy premier league captain pick GW6

This season so far  he’s played in 2 home games.  He scored for 6 points vs Spurs and blanked in the 4-0 home win against Brighton.  Despite that he is still the best performing player in underlying stats terms and has a PPM of 7.8.  He’s returned in 3 of the 5 games played so far.

Aguero

Aguero at home in 18/19 starting vs non top 6 sides

This season so far  he’s played in 2 home games.  He scored for 6 points vs Spurs and 16 points for 2 goals and an assist in the 4-0 home win against Brighton.  He is best performing forward in underlying stats terms and has a PPM of 9.2.  Only Pukki is better.  He’s returned in all 5 games played so far despite only being a sub for GW1.

Aubameyang

Aubameyang starts in 18/19 vs non top 6 sides

A patchy start but finished strongly.

This season so far  he’s played in 2 home games.  He scored for 6 points vs Burnley in the 2-1 win and scored for 9 points vs Spurs in the 2-2 draw.  Interestingly his underlyingstats this season haven’t been a patch on last season.  He’s only 9th so far of forwards.  However I would say he’s generally had excellent stats and he has played 2 of the games as a wide forward.  He has a PPM of 7.8 4th of the forwards.    He’s returned in all 5 games played so far.

Defences

Last season Watford were 12 in goals conceded away from home with 31 and 13th xGA .

This season their 2 away games were Everton and Newcastle and they’ve only conceded 2 goals in those games.  Overall though they are 17th with 10 goals conceded and 13th in xGA.

They as, of GW5, do have a very defensive minded manager now though who has stated he will employ the low block.

Villa were obviously in the Championship last season so difficult to use that given the personnel change.

Overall they are 9th in goals against and 14th in xGA which is the power of Tom Heaton.  The 2 away games were Spurs and Palace which is a big contrast.  They lost 3-1 to Spurs with late goals and lost 1-0 to Palace although Palace fully deserved the win with a 1.41 xG and an alarming 22 shots.

Summary

Gametime wise it’s best to read the above but in essence Sterling seems a starting risk given games played to date and Aguero seems nailed to start and I would be surprised iif Auba doesn’t.  This was written before the managers press conferences.

The bookies have Aguero at £1.44 , Sterling £1.57 and Aubameyang at £1.65 for an anytime goalscorer.

The Polls have Sterling at 52%, Aguero at 21% and Aubameyang at 9% for who will be managers captains.  The poll went up on Thursday after the UCL matches.

The contributors have it fairly comprehensively to Sterling

The stats of 18/19 favour Sterling and Sterling has started with the best underlying stats overall.

Defensively Villa are still a bit of an unknown but have shown a desire to defend at least.  Both away games were though were pretty disturbing from a defensive point of view though with 31 shots against v Spurs and 22 vs Palace with xGAs of 2.57 and 1.41 respectively.

Watford have also been pretty ordinary defensively but the new manager is very defensively focused so expect every bus available in Watford to be heading North in a flotilla Dunkirk style employed in the narrowest formation possible.

Aguero and Aubameyang have penalty duties.

FFGeek view

Easy choice for me as I only have Sterling.  If I had Aguero though I would go for him.  Possibly even if I knew all 3 were going to start just on what I’ve seen so far this season.  Although that’s easy to say when I don’t have to make the choice.

Good luck with your choice
