fantasy premier league gameweek 11 tips – “ones to watch” best defenders and GKs

Fantasy Premier League, Player Rankings

Here again is an new format article to help you with the best defenders in my “ones to watch” article.  The article ranks the best 10 defenders and gives a table of stats for you to make your own decision.  There’s also some narrative on each player and the next 10 fixtures to take a longer view than recently given.

fantasy premier league gameweek 11 tips – “ones to watch” best defenders/GKs

I’ve put together a table of stats with a key below it to rank the 10 best defenders.  I’ve tried to take a balance between the value and the attacking players and given a price range of players in the table. Below that I’ve put some narrative on each player plus their next 10 fixtures to give you a longer view.  I’ll also try and talk about the GK option and other players whether value or attacking defenders where relevant

Key:

Team ownership:  The total defence and GK ownership to give you an idea of how many FPL teams have a GK or Def from that team

Mins per FPL point:  How long it takes a player to earn an FPL point.  The lower the better obviously

Goals/Assist;  Goals/Assists so far in the season

CS – H/A:  The clean sheets so far this season.  Home/Away

Pred CS:  Predicted clean sheets in the next 10 games

Top 10 FPL managers own:  How many of the 10 top FPL managers I follow have the player in the team

Baines

With Ivanovic the best attacking defender in the premier league.  Top of the creating chances and assists for defenders.  The top scorer and the top points per game scorer for defenders as well.  In 7/10 games he’s either scored assisted or got a clean sheet.  Very good fixtures over 10 games as well.  Alcaraz long term injury removes the cheapie option.  GK Howard isn’t worth it at £5.3m

Next 10 fixtures:

Sunderland (A)
West Ham (H)
Spurs (A)
Hull (H)
Man City (A)
QPR (H)
Southampton (A)
Stoke (H)
Newcastle (A)
Hull (A)

Ivanovic

Despite being the only player who features among the best creating chances and in the best shooting stats there’s been no attacking returns since gameweek 3.  Add that to the 3 clean sheets only realised (the same as Burnley, Aston Villa and Newcastle) plus the cost and you look at him as a very expensive luxury.  However the underlying defensive stats suggest that the clean sheets will come as do his underlying attacking stats.  Azpilicueta coming back at £6.0m offers a cheaper alternative.  GK Courtois is £6.0m if you believe the clean sheets will flow

Liverpool (A)
West Brom (H)
Sunderland (A)
Spurs (H)
Newcastle (A)
Hull (H)
Stoke (A)
West Ham (H)
Southampton (A)
Spurs (A)
Newcastle (H)

Chambers

A goal and an assist plus his clean sheet against Burnley has seen him bought in numbers.  He definitely is great value for a defender in a team that got 17 clean sheets last year.  Ignore the poor clean sheet start he’s a must buy.  The only Arsenal defender to consider

Swansea (A)
Man Utd (H)
West Brom (A)
Southampton (H)
Stoke (A)
Newcastle (H)
Liverpool (A)
QPR (H)
West Ham (A)
Southampton (A)

Clichy

With Kolarov injured until GW15 Clichy offers a cheap alternative even if it’s only for the short term.  However a pretty awful performance against Moscow does raise the spectre of the versatile Sagna taking his position.  City have good fixtures over the next 10 and his price may want some to gamble.  Kompany is the more secure choice but at a price of £6.5m.  GK Hart is secure at £6.0m

QPR (A)
Swansea (H)
Southampton (A)
Sunderland (A)
Everton (H)
Leicester (A)
Crystal Palace (H)
West Brom (A)
Burnley (H)
Sunderland (H)

N Taylor

Swansea have defied the underlying stats with 5 clean sheets 2nd only to Southampton.  The law of averages may catch up with them and the fixtures are ok rather than outstanding.  However Taylor is a very good value rotation option for the better fixtures to take advantage of the ability of Swansea to get clean sheets.  Leave the purchase until after the next 2 fixtures though.  GK Fabianski is more expensive at £5.1m

Arsenal (H)
Man City (A)
Crystal Palace (H)
QPR (H)
West Ham (A)
Spurs (H)
Hull (A)
Aston Villa (H)
Liverpool (A)

Jenkinson

Interestingly it was Reid who was dropped rather than Tomkins or Collins for the Stoke game.  So I’ve gone for Jenkinson now as the West Ham pick.  Has got good attacking instincts and fairly valued with the rest of the team.  Cresswell at £5.4m and Tomkins at £5.0m are the best attacking options.  Cresswell is more expensive and Tomkins still needs to show he is the certain pick at CB.  The fixtures are pretty good and that is the main driver as they haven’t performed defensively.  The underlying stats show that there needs to be more defensive work to be done so it’s a leap of faith.  GK Adrian is the same value st £5.0m

Aston Villa (H)
Everton (A)
Newcastle (H)
West Brom (A)
Swansea (H)
Sunderland (A)
Leicester (H)
Chelsea (A)
Arsenal (H)
West Brom (H)

Bertrand

With Chelsea the best defensive team and this is shown in clean sheets, goals conceded and the underlying stats.  However the ranking has been dropped due to the very difficult games to come after 2 excellent fixtures next.  Alderweireld is the cheaper option at £5.0m.  GK Forster at £5.3m is more expensive than Alderweireld at £5.0m

Leicester (H)
Aston Villa (A)
Man City (H)
Arsenal (A)
Man Utd (H)
Burnley (A)
Everton (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Chelsea (H)
Arsenal (H)

Wisdom

WBA maybe a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde team but 4 clean sheets is only bettered by Swansea and Southampton.  Wisdom is the value option and seems to have held off the challenge of RB Gamboa.  Foster at GK is slightly more expensive at £4.5m but one of the few £4.5m GK options.  CB Dawson again is slightly more expensive  at £4.6m is the better attacking option.  Fixtures could be better

Newcastle (H)
Chelsea (A)
Arsenal (H)
West Ham (H)
Hull (A)
Aston Villa (H)
QPR (A)
Man City (H)
Stoke (A)
West Ham (A)

Dummett

Another cheapie option in a team which has shown improvement in recent games.  Reasonable fixtures and reasonable underlying stats give some hope that the improvement will continue.  GK Krul is another cheap option at £4.5m

West Brom (A)
QPR (H)
West Ham (A)
Burnley (A)
Chelsea (H)
Arsenal (A)
Sunderland (H)
Man Utd (A)
Everton (H)
Burnley (H)

Naughton

Pochettino after his excellent defensive work with Southampton hasn’t done anything like this with Spurs.  However Naughton is excellent value if you think things will improve.  However the fixtures aren’t great and there is little underlying stats to sign post an improvement.  GK Lloris is far to expensive at £5.7m

Stoke (H)
Hull (A)
Everton (H)
Chelsea (A)
Crystal Palace (H)
Swansea (A)
Burnley (H)
Leicester (A)
Man Utd (H)
Chelsea (H)
