Clay Van Doren

Clay’s last 11 seasons Overall ranks are 129k, 970th, 36k, 29k, 219k, 97k, 43k, 37k, 1k, 83k and 10k

GW 10 results: Solid gameweek

Brought in Califori for Virgil to secure 2nd Arsenal Defender and the one with the best goal threat after Gabriel

Landed with a strong 87 points which was 10 points above the Elite week average of 77 points.

My Gameweek rank of 640K was better than my personal target of 1M per week.  My cumulative OR is 473K (~341K improvement week on week) with Wildcard and Triple Captain used (64 points off 10K, 9 Points better than last week).

GW 11 Plan

With Gyokeres out, I intend to use opportunity to get Saka in.  Gyokeres and Reijnders to Guiu and Saka with 1.5M in the Bank.

I would like to have gotten Thiago but 0.5M short and do not want to use a 3rd transfer and no great candidates to remove on team.

Bench Boost Thoughts:  Prioritise Goalkeeper Fixtures…Currently GW14

Andersen’s return improves the medium-term outlook.

Currently, on GW14 with Everton at Home and Palace at home for bench defenders but will pull trigger at the last minute.

Alternatively, GW13 as goalkeepers have Brentford away and Bournemouth away….

…or GW12 where both goalkeepers are at home (but after International Break so uncertainty about Gametime all around)

I likely will move from Guiu to Thiago before the Bench Boost (when fixtures turn for Brentford).

Mid-term Plan: roll for a while

Over the last three weeks, I have improved my structure and have no pressing changes

Secured triple Arsenal while upgrading my 6th attacker to the critical 6.5+ category which has had differential returns vs. the less than 6M mids.

Munoz:  Separately, I would like to get Munoz in for his good run from GW12 but that would mean upgrading Sensi and taking funds out of midfield…or removing Califori or Gabriel all of which remain a lower priority.

Gakpo: playing many minutes but the extra 1M above Enzo and Sarr is problematic unless I transfer him in instead of Saka or Fernandes. Unfortunately he is getting rotated too much despite his hot form.  He also gets virtually no bonus when he scores.

Note to self: must use all transfers ahead of GW15 maximise the 5 AfCon transfers / mini-wild card In GW15.

Transfer summary: Gyokeres and Reijnders OUT to Guiu and Saka IN

Here’s the team assuming the above transfer in Transfer view on the FPL site:

Hello FFGeek patrons, and welcome to my GW11 write-up. We’re coming off the back of a very positive week — in fact, my strongest return of the season — where almost everything went to plan. Nine of eleven players returned, including all three of last week’s transfers, and we saw another captaincy haul from Haaland. The only downside was the injury to Gyökeres which forced him off at half-time, although even that has conveniently removed a transfer dilemma that we’ll come onto shortly.

Rather suddenly, I’m inside the top 500k, and it could be argued that my ‘true’ position is even better when factoring in the chip situation…

Chip Strategy: Bench Boost GW12, Triple Captain Later

With the ‘half-season chip reset’ now part of the game, GW19 becomes a natural point to assess rank. After that week, every manager will be left with one chip; a clean slate. Right now though, there is still large rank variation based on chip usage — and I’m in the minority who still hold both Bench Boost and Triple Captain. I’d estimate perhaps 20% of active managers are in the same position.

Unlike Wildcard or Free Hit, these are chips that generate pure extra points. If we assume 20 points combined as a fair expectation, that’s roughly a 10–15 point advantage over the average manager. Applying that to my current rank would place me closer to the 250k range in ‘true’ position — a very healthy spot going into the winter schedule.

Of course, that depends on using the chips well, which brings us to the plan:

Bench Boost — likely GW12

I’m aiming to move into a structure with eight playable attackers, meaning the viability of Bench Boost now mostly comes down to the defence. GW12 looks suitable even with Dubravka facing Chelsea, and I would prefer to use the chip sooner so that I can free up funds tied up in the bench afterwards. Importantly, GW12 is not a week I would consider for Triple Captain anyway, which helps keep the plan clean.

Triple Captain — most likely Haaland

Quite simply, I’d like to TC Haaland in a strong home fixture. That leaves three realistic windows:

· GW13 vs Leeds

· GW15 vs Sunderland

· GW17 vs West Ham

Of those, Sunderland looks the least appealing on current defensive form, so the decision may come down to whether I use the chip in GW13 or wait for the Christmas fixtures. The main risk in waiting is always injury or unexpected disruption — but Liverpool do have Wolves and Leeds at home in GW18/19, which provides a reasonable fallback if needed.

A Quick Note on GW16 and Transfer Management

One structural point to keep in mind is the GW16 reset, where every manager receives five free transfers. My intention is to carry as many of those as possible into the period after GW16 so that I have maximum flexibility when the landscape settles — rather than spending them immediately just because they are available.

However, the flip side is that any transfers I don’t use between now and GW16 are effectively lost. There’s no benefit in hoarding indefinitely if the squad has clear spots that can be improved in the short term.

So the guiding principle over the next few weeks is:

· Use transfers to improve the team now, if the moves are strong on their own merit

· But avoid dismantling structure or chasing punts, because I still want to reach GW16 with as much flexibility intact as possible

In other words — I still want to be conservative in how I shape the squad, but I don’t need to be conservative in actually using the transfers.
