fantasy premier league GW13 tips – “ones to watch” best defenders/GKs

Fantasy Premier League, Player Rankings

Here’s my gameweek 13 “ones to watch” article ranking the best defenders. It also gives a table of stats for you to make your own decision.  There’s also some narrative on each player and the next 10 fixtures to take a longer view than recently given.

I’ve put together a table of stats with a key below it to rank the 10 best defenders.  I’ve tried to take a balance between the value and the attacking players and given a price range of players in the table. Below that I’ve put some narrative on each player plus their next 10 fixtures to give you a longer view.  I’ll also try and talk about the GK option and other players whether value or attacking defenders where relevant

Mins per FPL point:  How long it takes a player to earn an FPL point.  The lower the better obviously

Pred CS:  Predicted clean sheets in the next 10 games

Ivanovic

Has not got any attacking returns since GW3 but still keeps threatening.  Chelsea have great underlying defensive stats and with a good run of fixtures there should be more clean sheets to come.  Azpilicueta is the cheap option at £6.0m but with little attacking returns.  Terry is a half way houese with mopre attacking potential at £6.3m.  GK Courtois is a similar value at £6.0m

Baines

Not in the squad for the Europa League game at Wolfsburg so needs monitoring for GW13.  The best attacking returns of any defender.  Coleman is also a good attacking option.  Distin is the cheap option and Jagielka the half way house at £5.7m.  GK Howard is  reasonable value at £5.3m.

Kompany

No clean sheet at home to Swansea was part of a continuing disappointment defensively for the team with 16 clean sheets last season.  There’s a mixture of good and tricky fixtures although Saints away next is not a great time to buy.  There’s no reliable cheapie option and GK Hart is comparable at £6.0m

Lovren

There’s no doubt that Liverpool have been a total defensive disaster this season.  I’m not trying to deny that.  Only 3 teams have conceded more goals and no team has got less clean sheets.  The basic shot stats are ok interestingly it’s just the big chances conceded and errors which have killed them.  However the fixtures are about as good as you could write.  Every game apart from 2 is a clean sheet potential for any team, even Liverpool.  There’s no real attacking option.  Lovren is just the cheapest.   GK Mignolet is a similar price.

Hutton

Aston Villa have a good clean sheet record and a reasonable goals conceded record.  The basic shot stats aren’t great but they don’t give errors and clear cut chances away to any high degree which has helped them.  Not that anyone is particularly expensive but Hutton is the cheapie option.  There’s no real great attacking option and GK Guzan is quite expensive at £4.7m.  Fixtures are the attraction though.

Chambers

It’s only 3 clean sheets so far compared to the 17 last season but Chambers is still great value for a top 4 challenging defender.  Although the clean sheet record is poor at 3 only 3 sides have conceded less goals.  Certainly the shots conceded stats are good.  It’s just errors that are causing problems. The fixtures are certainly not that helpful but having Koscielny coming back will definitely help.  He’s such good value there’s no Arsenal player worth considering as an alternative

Yun

QPR have conceded more goals than anyone and only have 2 clean sheets to show for it.  The underlying stats are generally dreadful though which doesn’t give much hope.  Yun though is about value at £3.9m.  Caulker is easily the best attacking option at £4.7m with a good history of goal scoring.  This season though he’s still only scored once.  GK Green is one of the few £4.5m GK options.  This is about the fixtures though which are truly excellent, especially the home ones

Taylor

Only Southampton have more clean sheets than Swansea and only Chelsea and Southampton have conceded less goals.  This really shows Swansea’s ability to grind out clean sheets despite the underlying stats which are no where nearly as good.  The fixtures now are good and Taylor is the cheapie option.  There’s no particularly strong attacking option and GK Fabianski is far too expensive at £5.1m

Jenkinson

West Ham have been an ok defensive team is about as good as you can say.  The fixtures are very good though especially those in the short term.  All the defenders are similar price and there’s no standout attacking option.  GK Adrian is similarly priced

Dummett

Newcastle have gone from defensive disaster area to 4 clean sheets in the last 5.  Dummett is the cheapie option here.  Janmaat at £5.2m is the attacking option.  GK Krul is a good £4.5m option.  Fixtures aren’t great though
