Firmino

The Liverpool CF/False 9 has been on a great run in the last 3 games with 4 goals and 2 assists and 36 FPL points in his last 3 games.  That takes him to 9 goals and 5 assists in 17 starts plus 2 sub appearances.  He hasn’t been the most consistent, returning a goal or assist in 8 of those 17 starts under a 50% threshold you’d hope for in a premium forward.  He has been explosive though with 6 of those 8 returns being double figure FPL hauls.  That % of 10+ point hauls of starts is Kane country.

His underlying stats are interesting.  They’re more like an attacking midfielder rather than a striker with his goal threat stats being very ordinary.  However he has shown an ability to over perform them since being at Liverpool and 4 of his last 5 starts have seen a significant improvement.

Will be rotated as everyone is on Klopp’s radar for that but is an important part of the way Liverpool play.

Lingard

It’s an incredible 6 goals and 2 assists in his last 7 games including 2 off the bench to rescue Man Utd v Burnley in GW20.

Those returns in recent games are no fluke either as his underlying stats have been excellent.  The worry was his place in the team when Pogba returned.  However the Burnley result wold have greatly assisted that issue.

Probably the main issue is sustainability.  Lingard has scored more goals in those 500 minutes of the last 7 games than he has in the previous 2 seasons of 3,000 minutes total and his underlying stats are twice as good as past seasons.  That’s either progress as a player or unsustainable over performance.

He also may lose minutes even if he does hold his place as with the number of AMs at Man Utd substitutions are inevitable

Kane

It’s unusual for someone to be on the most transferred in list when they haven’t got a fixture in the upcoming gameweek.  I’m a little unsure if this is to save money on the inevitable price rises or just panic transfers and lack of checking.

However with a double gameweek in GW22 for Spurs he is as close to essential as you’re ever going to get.  Bound to be a runaway captain favourite and could even be quite high in the triple captain chip usage.

I’m just a little surprised at the timing.  There must be some strong benches out there for GW21.

Interestingly, there are a few people going the other way and he nearly appeared on the most transferred out section as people look for a 1 week punt presumably instead of benching him.  Again these people must have a FPL team fire extinguisher gathering dust to be able to do that.

Alonso

Alonso, along with a few other players is that classic conundrum of “looks great on TV” vs underlying stats.  Whenever I watch Chelsea he’s invariably parked in the penalty area and is also pretty handy with direct free kicks and with his ability in the air.  There is no doubt wh,y when watching him he scores so many goals.

However ,his underlying stats are actually pretty ordinary and at his current rate of underlying  stats he’s already scored more than he should have for the whole season, even if he didn’t miss a minute of the season.  He has significantly over performed his underlying stats assisted by a couple of woeful GK errors.  Now last season he also overperformed his goal threat stats to a lesser extent so maybe there is longevity.  I’m just saying

What is clear though is that the Chelsea defence is quality and home to Stoke is a pretty good entry point for a defensive transfer.  It’s just whether the extra £1.4m cost over Christensen is going to continue producing golden eggs for the extra outlay.

Coutinho

One person who you should just ignore when it comes to underlying stats is Coutinho, such is his ability to over perform what he should be scoring.  This is mainly due to his ability to score from outside the box as he demonstrated against Swansea.  Also set piece duties and direct free kicks help his assists and goal scoring respectively.

3 goals and 2 assists  his last 3 games show his current form and his rate of return, helped by an ability to get bonus points that even Hazard would be envious of, are fantastic

Lukaku

Lukaku has scored 10 goals and 4 assists in 20 appearances all of which he played 90 minutes. However it has been at a very poor FPL point every 18.3 minutes for that price.

While he’s been consistent in returning a goal or assist in 12 of his 20 games he’s only got bonus points in 4 of those 12 games. That has completely taken away his explosiveness as he’s only got 2 double figure FPL point hauls in those 12 games and none since GW5.  None of this helps him as a captain option which is a big drawback at that price

His underlying stats are good and also consistent, especially if you discard games against the top 6 teams where the team tactics haven’t helped his effectiveness. However they are on a downward curve.

Rooney

Missed GW20 through illness but expected to be back for GW21.  It’s surprising that he would be sold before an away match to Bournemouth even though it’s surprising he’s got the returns given he’s played as either an attacking midfielder or even a CM in the majority of games.  He has needed 3 penalties to prop up the returns and even with those he looks like he’s been majorly overperforming his stats.

Hazard

1 assist in his last 5 starts are what this is about.  However taking him out before a home game to a depleted Stoke defence is really asking for trouble if you ask me although you may get lucky as he maybe part of Conte’s much talked about rotation.  You know the drill.   The squad isn’t big enough, too many games, Man City, blah blah all of which are meant for Abramovic I imagine.

5 goals and 4 assists over the season in 13 starts plus 4 as sub at an FPL point every 13 minutes isn’t bad at all.  Helped by the bonus point system loving him although he does have to return to get something.  However while he’s explosive getting 10 + FPL point hauls in 3 of 13 games he’s not that consistent only returning a goal or assist in 6 of his 13 matches.  That makes him a difficult captain target which is absolutely necessary at that price.

Given all that though selling before a home game to a depleted Stoke defence is something that I wouldn’t contemplate.  I like to watch games on the sofa not behind it

S Ward

Ruled out of GW21 although he was expected to be back.  Although Burnley look like they could get a clean sheet anywhere there are some tricky fixtures in that lot.  Probably too short a time period of injury for direct replacement Taylor at £4.2m.  If you still believe in Burnley then Ben Mee at £4.8m is probably the best option at the moment

Huddersfield (A)
Liverpool (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Man Utd (H)
Newcastle (A)
Man City (H)

Valencia

Has a hamstring injury with no return date as yet which may make it risky going for a direct replacement if you could work out who that will consistently be.  Jones at £5.6m is probably the best like for like Man Utd replacement or the GK De Gea at £5.9m
