bandwagons and sinking ships, Fantasy Premier League

Here’s our fantasy premier league GW23 article where we outline and give a view on the most transferred in players so far in the gameweek (the bandwagons) and the most transferred out (the sinking ships). There’s a table of stats on each as well as some narrative on their prospects and their next 6 fixtures

FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE GW23 – THE BANDWAGONS AND SINKING SHIPS

THE BANDWAGONS

Too early for Bookies odds at the moment with the FA Cup this week

These are the 5 most transferred in players so far in the gameweek. The fixt ease column shows the easiness ranking of the next 6/3 fixtures. See the full article on fixture ease. Values are as per Tuesday.  Also with the FA Cup 4th round this week there is additional injury risk.  Also be aware of the upcoming weeks where teams won’t be playing.  Here’s the link to my FPL calendar update

DELE ALLI

The Spurs attacking midfielder at the moment is practically a support striker to Harry Kane.   Although he was quiet in the draw with Man City in GW22 he still got into the 6 yard box to head home a Walker cross.  The game has seen him drop in terms of underlying shooting stats for the last 4 and over the season it’s only been ok.   His recent form and his advanced positioning has been excellent  and seen him score 8 goals and an assist in his last 6 games. He is also susceptible to being subbed early.   In summary though his excellent form and positioning plus Sunderland next are the reasons for him being so popular at the moment.

Sunderland (A)
Middlesbrough (H)
Liverpool (A)
Stoke (H)
Everton (H)
Crystal Palace (A)

COSTA

Last week the China drama saw Costa as a sinking ship but with that apparently put to bed he now returns as 2nd in the bandwagon category.

No FPL player has a higher % of games with a goal or assist than the Chelsea player.  This consistency is backed up by very good underlying stats.  Has struggled a bit with getting bonus points.  A 90 minute player though with little gametime risk as not in Europe and back up  Batshuayi has struggled to adapt to the PL.  2 tricky fixtures next though

Liverpool (A)
Arsenal (H)
Burnley (A)
Swansea (H)
West Ham (A)
Watford (H)

COLEMAN

The Coleman v Baines debate rages on in the FPL community.  With Everton having pretty good fixtures they suddenly looking like a viable defensive unit  The fullbacks are now becoming wingbacks in 3-5-1-1 so it’s a very legitimate argument.  In essence it’s argument which sees Coleman having the bigger goal threat getting forward more effectively vs Baines who has penalties and some set piece duties.  It depends on your preference really.  However for the reasons above I think they are both a viable option.   Away to Stoke is a tricky start though

Stoke (A)
Bournemouth (H)
Middlesbrough (A)
Sunderland (H)
Spurs (A)
West Brom (H)

CARROLL

When you see goals like Andy Carrolls first one against Middlesborough you realise what an absolute menace he is in the air for defenders.  For me though the next 2 fixtures and Chelsea in amongst the next 6 make it a less than ideal time to transfer Carroll in.  He is also flagged on FPL as having a groin injury but he’s dismissed any injury fears for GW23.  His form is good with 3 goals in 2 games and they are out of the FA Cup too which is a boost.  Recent underlying shooting stats are also very good.  It’s just whether the form outweighs the fixtures

Man City (H)
Southampton (A)
West Brom (H)
Watford (A)
Chelsea (H)
Bournemouth (A)

KANE

Got an excellent assist despite a very quiet game in GW22 against Man City.  Sunderland next.  6 goals and 2 assists in his last 5 games plus very good recent underlying stats are the reasons for him being attractive transfer.  Fixtures are ok with Liverpool and maybe Everton the difficult ones.

Sunderland (A)
Middlesbrough (H)
Liverpool (A)
Stoke (H)
Everton (H)
Crystal Palace (A)

THE SINKING SHIPS

Too early for Bookies odds at the moment with the FA Cup this week

These are the 5 most transferred out players so far in the gameweek. As I said above the fixture ease column shows the easiness ranking of the next 6/3 fixtures. See the full article on fixture ease. Values are as per Tuesday.  Also with the FA Cup 4th round this week there is additional injury risk.  Also be aware of the upcoming weeks where teams won’t be playing.  Here’s the link to my FPL calendar update

LALLANA

The Liverpool box to box midfielder has a PPG of 5.5 which is 7th among all midfielders.  However with 3 consecutive blanks the last one against Swansea and Chelsea next then transfers out are hardly surprising.  He’s also got no underlying stats which is often the case for box to box midfielders so there’s nothing to point at to guarantee an upswing.  He’s also only £0.7m cheaper than Coutinho which considering Coutinhos advanced position and set piece representation doesn’t seem too much.

Chelsea (H)
Hull (A)
Spurs (H)
Leicester (A)
Arsenal (H)
Burnley (H)

HAZARD

It’s ok even at £10.3m to blank.  Add into the fact that the game is at home to Hull and you’re one of the captain favourites and you’re taken off after 70 minutes without even taking a shot then you’re going to see transfers out definitely.  Unfortunately 2 assists in the last 4 and underlying stats dropping like a stone plus Liverpool and Arsenal next just exacerbates the issue

Liverpool (A)
Arsenal (H)
Burnley (A)
Swansea (H)
West Ham (A)
Watford (H)

DEFOE

5th in points per game among forwards, 4 goals in his last 4 and 28 FPL points.  Does blanking in GW22 really warrant that amount of sales?  Yes Sunderland are woeful but we’ve seen that Defoe doesn’t need that many chances to score.  However if you are going to sell doing so when facing one of best defences in the league of Spurs is a good time to do so.  There are also some tricky ones to follow as well.

Spurs (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Southampton (H)
Everton (A)
Man City (H)
Middlesbrough (A)

LUKAKU

This I am pretty surprised about.  2 goals and an an assist in the last 3 and good fixtures coming up.  Nothing wrong with his recent underlying stats.   A guaranteed 90 minute player who is the attacking focal point of the team. Does a blank against Palace really deserve a sale?

Stoke (A)
Bournemouth (H)
Middlesbrough (A)
Sunderland (H)
Spurs (A)
West Brom (H)

 SNODGRASS

The Hull midfielder has had a lot of speculation about leaving after refusing a new contract with Hull.  He was left out against Chelsea with a supposed injury although the timing was fairly convenient.  He is a dream midfielder in the sense that he has set pieces plays practically as a support striker and also has pens.  Hull also look like they will improve under Silva.  The big however are the next 3 fixtures which scream sell.

Man Utd (A)
Liverpool (H)
Arsenal (A)
Burnley (H)
Leicester (A)
Swansea (H)
