fantasy premier league GW38 midfielders – player rankings

The schedule explained

I have compiled the rankings by going through the anytime goal scoring odds of 1 bookie and picking out the best odds for midfielders that I think will play in GW38.  Obviously at this time of the season it’s impossible to second guess managers with few games really meaning something.  However that is all explained in the narrative below.

As anytime goalscoring odds assume that the player starts and ignore assist potential I’ve bought in 3 players with good fixtures at the end who are creators more than goal scorers and have at least some set piece responsibility.

The last 2 columns of stats are their FPL points per 90 minutes played (PP90) and their season underlying stats ranking for midfielders as at the end of GW35.  Apologies it hasn’t been updated further but unfortunately it is very time consuming and  there hasn’t been time since.  As it’s for the entire season up to and including GW35 it will be fairly representative of the current position.

This is the 2nd player rankings article for GW38.  I have also completed one for defenders and goalkeepers

 Salah

Liverpool go into this game knowing they may need a point to qualify for the top 4 if Chelsea win at Newcastle.  Therefore it is inconceivable that Salah won’t play even with the upcoming UCL final.  It should be remembered though that the final is 13 days after GW38.  There are reports that he will have pens for this game.  Mane is a doubt for the game btw.

Sterling

Pep rested a number of players in the midweek with Sterling being one of them.  Given that and the fact that Southampton aren’t technically safe and Swansea are not technically relegated it’s conceivable a strong side including Sterling will be put out.

Hazard

Chelsea must win to have any chance of a top 4 place and with Hazard a sub in midweek he looks certain to start.  He is also one of the few midfielders with penalty duties.  1 goal and 1 assist in his last 6 starts though doesn’t scream transfer me in but this is a guy with 6 double figure FPL point hauls who can turn up at any given time.

Martial

Mourinho has intimated that Martial will start and after his poor performance v Brighton he will be itching to put things right if for no other reason than as a shop window. This will be no training ground stroll for him that’s for sure.  1 assist in his last 5 starts isn’t a great recommendation and the underlying stats in 4 of those games were pitiful.  Will probably play on the left of a front 3 with Rashford as the CF.

Arnautovic

Although the game is meaningless it does have the spice of being against Moyes old club plus, potentially, his last game in charge.  That could see a strong lineup and Andy Carroll is the only possible impediment to Arnautovic playing as a CF.  After a slow start it’s been a strong season although he can be a bit hit and miss with returns and stats.

Zaha

Zaha has been playing as a striker in the last 5 games with Benteke on the bench after Benteke put in a series of lamentable performances and misses.  Zaha has performed strongly with 4 goals and 2 assists in that time returning a goal or assist in 4 of the 5 matches. Those returns have been no fluke and are backed up by some exceptionally good underlying stats.

He does face opposition in WBA that has only conceded 2 goals and claimed 3 clean sheets in the last 4 matches despite playing Man Utd, Liverpool and Spurs in those 4. However WBA are now relegated so we could see a natural relaxation despite the fact that I’m sure they will be playing for Darren Moore to get the full time job.

Eriksen

Poch has said that Spurs want to finish 3rd and will need to beat Leicester to do so.  I’m therefore expecting a strong team.  Has improved his goal threat although maybe at the expense of his creativity with 11 goals and 10 assists compared to 20 assists last season and 16 the season before.  He still has the majority of set pieces though.  However, after being on a strong run of returns and underlying stats it’s all gone a little awry with 1 assist in his last 4 games and some pretty mixed underlying stats.

Alli

As I said above, Poch has said that Spurs want to finish 3rd and will need to beat Leicester to do so.  I’m therefore expecting a strong team. Like Spurs itself he’s been stuttering with 1 goal and 1 assist in his last 5 starts.  His underlying stats tend to be very good or nothing but he does have the basic advantage of a very advanced position.

De Bruyne

Not rated highly by the bookies for goal threat although he does have 8 goals to add to his 17 assists this season.  The main creative force and set piece man for Man City.  He was rested during the midweek match.  Hasn’t been producing at the moment though with 1 goal and 1 assist in his last 8 starts and the last 4 starts have seen some very ordinary underlying stats

Milivojevic

It’s pretty rare that at this price in the midfield that you get a player with penalty and some direct free kick duties.  That has seen the CDM score 10 goals and 2 assists so far this season.

Gudmundsson

Sean Dyche has been an oasis of certainty with his team selection in a season of team selection chaos.  It’s hoped that this will continue in the home game v Bournemouth who have a quite truly tragic defence.
