A change of format

After giving it some thought I’ve reverted back to the format that I used last season which I think was simpler and easier to get all the required information to make a decision into 1 table.

If you just want a quick transfer suggestion I’ve given these at the end if you want to skip all the preamble.

Stats definitions:

I’ve firstly ordered the teams by what I think is their defensive strength based their goals conceded, xG conceded and the shots per game conceded.  These stats are for 19/20 only.  After 5 games it’s worth bearing in mind that they are distorted by fixtures and a small data size. You can see the rank of each stat mentioned above in the first 3 columns.

The stats after that are their:

My suggested defender for that team.  I’ve tried to take into account what I think is an appropriate price for the team as well as their attacking and points potential.  The table then shows their value and current 19/20 PPM

The likely starting GK for the team with the same price and PPM next to them

A bookies odds for a clean sheet for GW6.  The lower the better obviously.

The fixture ease rank.  The team facing the easiest attacking teams over the next 6 gameweeks is ranked 1.  See our fixture ease article

Prices are as of Wednesday 18 September

The Schedule

If you want access to copy and paste the schedule here’s the google spreadsheet link which I’ve set out differently if you want to sort different columns.  Just go File> make a copy to get your own version

The teams are ranked by defensive strength only. Fixtures are not factored in.

The value watchlist

Here’s a few players I’ll be monitiring to see if they can secure a place in the team and provide a good value entry into that team

Spurs

There are 3 RBs around £5.0m who have attacking potential and value.  They are Aurier, Walker Peters and Foyth.  Foyth is injured but could be back in a few weeks.  Rotation could still be an issue even once established though

Chelsea

£4.5m Tomori or £5.0m Christensen if they can become Rudigers regular partner could be great value when Rudiger and Kante are fit to strengthen their defence.  It’s also worth noting that while Chelsea have conceded a lot of goals  their xG conceded and shot conceded rank isn’t as bad.  Improvement could be on the way.

3 £4.0m defenders

If your objective is just a cheap as possible bench there are 3 players who are still alive as prospects.  That’s barely though but no harm monitoring.

Rico of Bournemouth I think will be replaced in a few weeks when Kelly is match fit.

Kelly of Palace is injured with no return date but will struggle to get back with Sakho and Cahill in place

Hanley of Norwich may struggle to get back into the side after the performance of Amadou even though he’s a CDM by trade

Transfer suggestions for GW6

Here I trying to find a combination of defensive strength, a good next fixture and fixtures beyond that for me this week there are only 2.

Man City

The chaotic mistake heavy performance against Norwich certainly surprised me.  This week it appears now that Stones is also injured so I imagine that Fernandinho will step into CB although tonights game in the UCL may give us some more information.

The issue now is that both full backs are vulnerable after poor performances although how match ready Cancelo and Mendy are is not known.

With Stones injured it seems through lack of alternatives that Otamendi will have to keep his place.  Although there are reasonable doubts about the defence their fixture run coming up is excellent as you will see from the graphic below which is why I still think that they are worth investment

Everton

Everton despite a few questionable performances have a good fixture next home to Sheffield United and this is a good entry point if you’re thinking of a transfer.

Digne although he’s expensive is probably the obvious choice.  The other likely 3 starters in Coleman, Mina and Keane are all cheaper though and in the £5.5m range.  Interestingly in my form tables you’ll see that Coleman has the better underlying attacking stats to date although he does have an excellent RB in the wings in Sidibe so I would say he’s at the most risk of rotation/losing his place compared to the other 3

The fixture ease schedule for defenders and GKs

Here’s a graphic where the teams are ranked by the ease of the attacking teams they face over the next 6 gameweeks.
