GW5 WC review:

The WC I have played on GW5 resulted in more points than what my previous squad would have scored, but I was still a bit disappointed. Raphinha, Bamford, Jota could all haul but missed very good chances, and the double Wolves defense which I thought would bring me easy clean sheets, conceded twice. On top of all that, Reece James has been benched while the alternative I considered, Rudiger, hauled big time.

However, the WC is not to be evaluated over a single GW. I decided on my squad with a long-term vision and should therefore be patient with the outcome.

GW6 and beyond:

Originally I planned to roll the transfer this week and then on GW7 do Bamford + Jota/Greenwood => Lukaku + 4.5 (making Gallagher a usual starter). I usually preach against a 3 premium squad as it is impossible to justify a premium price without captaincy (long-term) but as I found this current squad combination in which Gallagher is the only weak link, I thought that the potential upside was too good to pass on. Although I must admit that this route required passing on Antonio which didn’t feel right.

Now however, Bielsa just declared that Bamford is unavailable for the weekend and that complicates things for me. The obvious move is Bamford => Antonio but that means that the “Lukaku in” move would require a hit. I got to say though that the way Leeds defense looks like makes me think the hit might be worth it.

Transfers:

So, I should decide on one of the following routes:

Roll the transfer, play James or Livermento this week (which is actually not too bad), and do the “Lukaku in” for 3 premiums next week.
Bamford => Antonio. And next week do the 3 premiums move.
Bamford => Antonio. And next week decide on only one of Ronaldo/Lukaku and continue with 2 premiums only.
I currently tend to one of the latter 2 options.

Captaincy:

Salah, Ronaldo, and Antonio are all legitimate options this GW. For me it will probably be Ronaldo as he is a favorite of mine irrespective of FPL and this game is suppose to be fun after all (although it not always is 😄). The fact that he plays at home unlike the other 2 helps as well.

Good Luck all and see you next week when the really important decision will have to take place.

Transfer summary: likely Bamford out and Antonio in

Wildcard activated

I covered my GW5 review in my earlier article. A pleasing rank halving week to sit handily at 51k. So far so good.

Well we always know in FPL that just when we have a solid plan and are feeling settled on our teams, something will come along and pull the rug from under our feet.

My original wildcard article at the start of the week had two drafts. I had been pretty set on the 2nd draft until the Leeds press conference.

I had Bamford and Raphinha paired up for Leeds great fixture run, and was hoping for both injury flags go disappear, but Bamford is definitely out for at least one game, and Raphinha might or might not play. It’s easy to bench one of them, even both, but when you are on wildcard, the last thing you want is putting flagged players in your team and injured players on your bench.

Change of plan :

So I have brought in Jimenez and Sarr as “place holders”. Sarr plays Newcastle and Leeds, Jimenez plays Southampton and Newcastle, the latter game coinciding with Bamford probably returning so it’s a good fixture to have instead. I have a spare 0.5 to bring back either Bamford or Raphinha at any time if required.

I went early on the wildcard, partly as I had flipped Antonio to Bamford in GW5 and got spooked with no Antonio this week and wanted both. In hindsight, I could have now just reversed the injured Bamford back to Antonio and wildcarded GW7 as planned. I was also concerned about Torres v Chelsea and Greenwood losing his place, but he probably plays this week too !!

Thinking ahead:

I have the “premium defence” in place early, beating price rises which is good. I actually beat a few rises and falls. My plan is to play Shaw in tasty home games v Villa and Everton, when Man City play Chelsea and Liverpool both away, then switch Shaw to Dias from GW8 when city have Burnley Brighton and Palace, and Man Utd embark on Leicester, Liverpool, Spurs and Man City.

I don’t plan to jump on Lukaku in GW7. I will stick with Ronaldo in two games I think he can match lukaku in. Then GW9 is the plan to jump on Lukaku for Norwich, Newcastle and Burnley, and take a deep breath as Ronaldo has Liverpool, Spurs, Man City and Chelsea. It will still be a hard watch !!!

So it’s a “two premium” plan for me. That extra 4-5M across the rest of the team is huge. If you own Salah, Ronaldo and Lukaku, you can only Captain one of them !! And it means compromising either on the likes of Antonio, Bamford etc or that premium defence. Time will tell how it all plays out !!!

Wildcard players out:

Coufal, White, Tsimikas, Greenwood, Raphinha, Bamford, Steele, Torres, Zekiri

Wildcard players in:

Rudiger, Alonso, Sarr, Jimenez, Foster, Gallagher, Livramento, McArthur, Antonio

Captain this week is Ronaldo.

Good luck everyone !!!
