Introduction

This is part 2 of the FPL managers who contribute to the FFGeek site with good histories who show their teams each week. This will give people a feel for what other managers are doing. It’s a fairly informal thing with no obligation on anyone and these teams may change at anytime before the deadline without further notice. It won’t cover transfers in real time either. It’s just to give an idea of the trends for the week no more.  The teams are shown as their “final-ish” teams so they could change.  Where they have twitter accounts I have shown this and they may update them there or on our Slack Channel which is part of our subscription Patreon site but this is not guaranteed

– Well a much quieter Gameweek with only 19 goals across the 10 games, the surprise early pace setters Villa and Everton both had their bubble burst, late clean sheet wipeouts for Palace Wolves and Brighton, and frustration for the two clear captain favourites Salah and Kane. Goals and points were hard to come by. But Bamford, Ings, Zaha and Son were amongst only six players to hit double figures, in what was a tough week for many.

My Gameweek 6 review:

– Just four “returners” in a score of 46 points resulted in a red arrow drop from 1.5M to 1.7M. In truth, after how the Gameweek started, and as a non Kane owner, I feel like I “got away with it” this week and my overwhelming feeling is one of relief.

A Saturday nightmare:

– I went into Saturday with optimism high. Sterling against a Westham side that he and Man City usually cut to ribbons, Mitrovic with a home game against Palace, Werner at “Wobble Trafford” against a United side who leak goals, captain Salah at home to a side in 19th place with only one point, with Trent looking assured of at least a clean sheet in the same game. A bruising day of five blanks from five left me staring down the barrel, especially knowing my exposure to Kane.. this was going to be a very long weekend.

A Sunday recovery:

– Sunday went surprisingly well. An unexpected clean sheet for McCarthy against free scoring Everton, a fortunate clean sheet for Saïss who was subbed off and avoided the late Wolves wipe out for his fellow defenders, and a very unexpected clean sheet for Justin at Arsenal. Despite blanks for Calvert-Lewin and Podence, I somehow finished Sunday on a green arrow on the back of just three clean sheets from ten players. But I was still braced for a tough Monday behind the settee.

Dodging the Kane bullet:

– Monday was all about Kane as a non owner. A goal for Son was pretty neutral. The damage from a Kane haul would have been huge, given his ownership and captaincy. A solitary assist felt like I had dodged a silver bullet.

– My week was further helped with late clean sheet collapses of Palace, Wolves and Brighton, as well as Villa conceding, and Grealish and Rodrigues blanking. From where I was on Saturday night with my “fab five” all flopping, my small red arrow almost “feels green”…..

My big template decision:

– My managerial style tends to be “cautious” and I like to own the popular players for rank protection. I use my own definition of “template”, based on player ownership of my fellow contributors, plus twenty other respected managers I follow. It became clear last week that I was looking highly exposed to both Kane and Rodriguez. So my big call all week was whether to cash in the previous weeks returns of Sterling and Werner to make a switch, for a -4, to get Kane and Rodriguez ( my only real route to Kane ). But with the injury flag on Rodriguez casting doubt on him playing, I didn’t really fancy giving up Sterling and Werner ( for a hit ) in what looked such great fixtures, with a great opportunity for high gains. So I stepped out of my comfort zone and took on what seemed the whole world with Kane.

– In the end, it was all completely irrelevant as Sterling, Werner, Rodriguez all blanked and Kanes 5 points simply offset the cost of a potential hit .. but this week has reminded me that “upside chasing” of differentials at the expense of highly owned template players is a fantastic exciting adrenaline ride, with huge potential rewards, but it takes me way out of my comfort zone and my way of playing that’s served me well. I need to sleep at night !!

Captain Mo:

– The Salah blank was a tough one to take, as it would have made a significant difference to my rank, in what was a shootout between him and Kane for captaincy. I think all Salah armbanders can consider themselves very unlucky. A marginal offside VAR call and the width of a post, denied Salah what would have been a 30 point captain haul. That could have been a huge defining moment of the week, especially as Trent was assisting the disallowed “goal”. Right decision, wrong outcome. My captaincy points are just dropping on the wrong side of the fence this season.

So what next:

– I am writing this before the midweek European games, so any significant injury news would impact on my thoughts and plans below.

– I have 0.1M in the bank and two free transfers, as I stuck with my preferred policy of “roll and two” last week. It was always my intention to “get Kane” this week ahead of favourable games at home to Brighton and then West Brom. He will be a huge captain pick in the latter game when Liverpool are busy playing Man City. I took the decision to avoid the hit and get him this week for free. His next two fixtures and ownership are just too dangerous not to. So Kane is coming in for Werner.

– I need to fund it. I could keep hold of Sterling, who I really enjoy owning as an explosive differential. But that would mean selling Trent and that’s not negotiable , particularly ahead of a great fixture. I am going to reluctantly give up Sterling to bring in Rodriguez ( provided he is fit ) which will also bring me in line with my defined template and give me all of the “magic four” that had damaged me heavily in the first few weeks – Kane, Son, Calvert Lewin and Rodriguez. Yes, Sterling might haul, but I am back where I feel comfortable. It does also put about 2M in my kitty which I can put to very good use. So it’s a double deal I am happy with.

– In the event that Rodriguez is injured, I would buy Grealish instead, as I have to buy Kane this week.

What to do with the extra 2M:

– It won’t be this week as I have my two moves mapped out, so I am thinking further ahead.

– I can upgrade Justin or Taylor to Chilwell. I can upgrade Podence to Foden or Grealish. I can actually go the other way and take Podence down to Soucek, who has been very unlucky so far and has great fixtures coming up, and have enough in my bank to bring in Robertson.

– At a time when many are jumping off the Liverpool defence, I quite like the idea of going the other way and having both Liverpool full backs. Robertson is the same price as Grealish, he attacks just as much, is on corners and free kicks, and has clean sheet potential too. Owning the two Liverpool full backs, if playing three at the back, effectively turns a “front seven” into a “front nine” !!

– The latter option involves two moves so is not going to happen overnight, particularly as my plans for this week are already set. Something to think about.

My template team:

– Having a much more template side does severely restrict potential “big jumps” but it means I am more “protected”. However it does mean I have to really search amongst my 3/4 non template differentials, for players who can have a big impact and move me forward.
Look at the difference having a Bamford or Zaha did this week. That’s all it takes. I can be template but still find those “golden nuggets” to get ahead.

– My “template six” by my own definition, from this week will be – Trent, Salah, Son, Rodriguez, Kane and Calvert Lewin.. the 7th would be Martínez, but for now, McCarthy is doing well with three clean sheets in the last four games, so that’s not priority.

– My four non template “differentials” ideally need to be low ownership. They are currently Mitrovic ( 9.5% ), Saiss ( 19% ), Podence ( 3% ), and Justin ( 23% ) , with Taylor ( 3% ) also in the mix on the bench. My most important differential players in my structure, who can have the biggest impact, are going to be my 3rd striker and my 4th midfielder. That’s currently Mitrovic and Podence. Both are underperforming for points right now.

My transfer targets:

– My moves are mapped out this week, so I am probably looking at GW8 to swap out either Mitrovic or Podence, which works well anyway as they both have favourable home fixtures this week.

– I won’t be selling Mitrovic ahead of West Brom at home, but I could then look to move him on after that. Antonio ( 4% owned ) is a natural replacement for a great run of fixtures from GW8, but he may now be injured, which would be disappointing. So Maupay ( 6% owned ) and Adams ( 2% ) are in the melting pot too as a possible low ownership Mitrovic replacement.

– I won’t be moving Podence this week either, due to his fixture, but he has been consistently getting “hooked off “ early, and his fixtures turn worse, so he is definitely on the chopping block. I have the cash to get Foden, who is not nailed but definitely explosive and only 8% owned. Bowen and Soucek ( both 2% owned ) are other options from GW8 with favourable West Ham fixtures.

The Wolves concern:

– I am sitting on Podence and Saiss as two of my non template differentials and I have concerns this week about both of them making the starting line up !! Traore is a threat to Podence.

– All eyes on the Wolves defence this week, with Saiss, Kilman and Marcal all seemingly competing for two spots. Saiss and Kilman currently in the box seat but either could be vulnerable to Marcal starting. Saiss is the highest points scoring defender but he is looking far from secure:

Wildcard time ?

– I am very attracted to playing my wildcard during the second international break, after GW8. It’s always a great opportunity to have two weeks of tinkering time and to jump on price changes, increase team value nicely and ride out any international injuries.

– There are enough “minor issues “ developing and general changes I am looking to make, to think it’s a good time to breath new life into my team and move me up the rankings. I can also make a proactive transfer in GW8 instead of having to roll for two in the break. I can look to construct my wildcard team to get in Robertson, or Foden. I can also take advantage of some significant fixture swings coming up.

– From GW9 after the international break, Spurs play Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. At the same time, Man City will be lining up against Burnley Fulham and West Brom. It might be a time to jump back on Sterling or De Bruyne. It’s a pity that Aguero has picked up another injury as that fixture run looked perfect for him.

– So all in all, I have one eye firmly on a potential wildcard during the second international break after GW8.

GW7 Transfer summary:

– Two free transfers. Likely to be Sterling and Werner out, Rodriguez and Kane in.

Captain:

– It looks like being a three way “bun fight” this week, with Son joining Salah and Kane in what looks a very tough call. Liverpool v West Ham and Spurs v Brighton. A very tough call. I am still undecided.

Good luck everyone for GW7 !!

GW6 review

These torturous gameweeks come along every now and again where big players blank left, right and centre and you’re left trying to pick up the pieces. Thankfully this week, the damage was fairly limited in the end but it was looking pretty precarious going into the final game. I knew I’d be playing catch-up all weekend on this one, with most of my players playing on Sunday and Monday and so it proved: a blank on Friday and 2 blanks including Captain Salah on Saturday left me on a GW rank of 6.6 million going into Sunday. At least the middle day of the GW started with a return, albeit not from an expected source – a McCarthy clean sheet as his 6 points was 200% more than the in-form Everton duo of James and DCL in my line-up. I’ll forget about leaving a second Saints clean sheet on the bench! Jimmy then popped up with a lovely late strike in the 430 game pulling in max bonus with it too, but I was still sat at 5.6 million GW rank with 4 to play going into Monday evening.

Bissouma unsurprisingly blanked in the 530 game but thankfully, the Spurs boys kind of bailed me out again. Son’s 11 points was my only double-figure haul of the week but was supplemented nicely by 5 from Kane and a handy clean sheet from the orange-flagged Dier, his first return of the season. So for the 4th week out of 6 it was 5/11 returners but like 2 of the previous 3 it was a red arrow albeit a fairly small one in the context of things. Indeed another 3 points and I’d have bagged a small gree Onto GW 7 we go.

GW 7 Team

1FT and £1.4 million in the bank this week. My Plan A is still to dead end my team in GW8 and play my Wildcard over the international break prior to GW9, but I’m not averse to a Plan B of trying to hold the Wildcard until closer to GW16 either so I’m in 2 minds what to do with my transfer this week. Plan A would mean trying to bank this week and use 2 in GW8 whereas for Plan B I’d probably try and either use this week’s one and bank the GW8 transfer or carry this week and only use 1 next week so I’ve 2 frees coming back from the break.

At present, I’m happy to say that despite a dodgy GW6 I actually don’t have too many pressing issues with my team. I’ll have to wait to see what the midweek fixtures throw up but my injuries seem to have cleared and I can field a fairly decent 11 this week in a 4-3-3 with the attacking 6 all having a good fixture. If I have a good score this week, I have to say I’m probably more inclined towards holding the Wildcard a bit longer. Although GW8 to 9 looks a great spot in terms of fixture changes, there is the caveat that I think this season holding the Wildcard as long as possible is an advantage in case anything goes seriously awry with Covid and of course to plan for double gameweeks moving forward (remember Burnley, City, United and Villa are 1 game behind.)

My initial plan for GW8 transfers have also been thrown in the air by some injury news as well. Antonio (home versus Fulham) would have been one of my planned transfers in that week (for Jimenez), but there’s some strong rumours doing the rounds that he’s going to be out for a while so this would scupper this move. Instead I’m now liking Ings at home to Newcastle that week, but that would leave me less in bank to bolster elsewhere. Food for thought.

So I’m going to sit on this one and mull it, but for now it looks very likely I’ll carry my transfer this week either way. As for my line-up, for the attcking 6 it’s double Spurs (BRI), double Toffees (new) plus Salah (WHM) and Jimmy (CRY). I’ve got a call to make on starting KWP vs Soucek (he’s due something soon and West Ham don’t seem to worry about the opposition at the moment.) KWP has got the start for the moment on the basis of 3 clean sheets in the last 4 but I can see myself changing my mind on this before Friday! For Captain, I’m settled on Kane though I think Son, Salah and City assets will be popular this week too.

Good luck this week folks – I’ll post my final team on Twitter some time on Friday as usual.
