Hazard

I had to check Hazard’s PP90 about 5 times to see if it’s correct it’s so high and weirdly the same as his price?  It is correct though and a sign of the form he’s in.  Aided by the fact that in 3 of the 4 games he’s returned a goal or assist in he’s got maximum bonus.  I’ve said before that he has bonus for breakfast and he’s showing that again this season so far.  He also has the very handy bonus of penalties which is rare for a midfielder.

His only negative is that his underlying stats aren’t anything to write home about but he has consistently over performed them.  I’m sure if this was put to Hazard himself he would say (in a Belgian accent)  “xG that is the measure of an average player’s ability,  I am among the top 3 players in the world,  xG puh!”  Actually I don’t think he would say that, he seems pretty modest and likeable in interviews.  His praise for Sturridge over the weekend is typical of what I’ve seen of him.

Maddison

It’s always difficult to assess someone coming up from the Championship and Maddison is no difficult.  There’s no questioning the returns at a basic level.  He also seems pretty involved in Leicesters attack and has alot of set piece responsibility as well as pens when Vardy is off the pitch.  He also has very good fixtures.

Probably the risk area’s is that of the 3 goals, 1 has come from a pen which it’s hard to see happening again.  The other a wonder goal from a free kick.  Last season 2 goals from free kicks were the maximum scored.  2 from Alonso and 2 from Coutinho.  De Bruyne only scored the 1 so it’s hard to see that being a major source.  His xG is very poor.  He is a volume shooter though which is something.  Only Richarlison and Schurrle outside the top 6 shoot more per 90.  His xA is good but unless you’re De Bruyne or Ozil 17/18 xA alone doesn’t get you far FPL points wise.

However so far he’s returning at an excellent rate for the price, has set pieces and has good fixtures so if that trio works for you then he’s a great buy

Kane

I can throw loads of stats and underlying stats at you here but the 1 thing with Kane is that you never know when he’s going to explode.  Yeah he’s been inconsistent, yes Spurs are not at their best, yes he doesn’t look himself, yeah his underlying stats are nothing like last season and his return to form is actually 2 penalties of 3 goals scored in the last 2 games.  Strip those out and you’ve got 1 goal in his last 4.

You may have seen my tweet.  His shot volumes so far this season have seen 4 games with only 2 shots in his 7 starts.  To find 4 starts where he only took  2 shots prior to this season I had to go back 44 games!!

That’s the dilemma and the choice you have to make.   The Kane who’s scored 105 goals in the last 4 seasons or the 18/19 version of Harry Kane above.  It’s also not the ideal fixture to have to make that call.

Arnautovic

Has started off the season fantastically well with 4 goals and an assist in 6 starts considering that Liverpool, Arsenal and Man Utd were part of that first  6.  Also has pen duties and has become the talisman for the side to the extent that it’s difficult to see him moved wide from the CF position.  Backed up by pretty good underlying stats

Fixtures are a bit mixed

Leicester (A)
Burnley (H)
Huddersfield (A)
Man City (H)

Trippier

With Eriksen out at least for the GW8 game Trippier is the natural player to pick up set pieces as a bonus to the fact that a clean sheet has to be a decent chance against the side who is one of the worst in the league for attacking stats.

Salah

1 goal in his last 4 games, no bonus points in either of the 3 games he’s returned in, his finishing looked tentative at best v Chelsea and it’s a 70 and 65 minute subbing in 2 of the last 4 games.  All does not look right.

Where it does look good still is underlying stats.  He has the best underlying stats by NPxG/xA of any midfielder this season and shot volume wise when on the pitch he’s only bettered by Mahrez.  Key pass volume wise when on the pitch he’s only bettered by D Silva, Sanchez, Hazard and Willian.

It all depends on whether you think underlying stats mean anything and whether you’re willing to let him go before GW9 vs Huddersfield and GW10 vs Cardiff

Mendy

Currently injured and in a bit of hot water with Pep when he somehow managed to be 3 hours late for treatment.  Pep has said he is a maybe for GW8 although it’s hard to know how accurate that IS considering last week he didn’t even know what part of the anatomy the injury was to.

Seriously though I find the problem with these injuries is that you never get any decent information from the manager and they tend to come back or not come back when you least expect it.

He certainly is an attacking phenomenon as a left back often popping up in the CF/CAM position randomly.  5 assists in 4 starts says it all. It’s just when is he likely to return

Mane

3 consecutive blanks and Man City next is going to generate transfers out that’s for sure.  Spurs and Chelsea in 2 of those games makes it a bit more understandable but FPL is a results business and at £10m 3 blanks generally will push managers over the edge.

The last 2 games have been pretty disappointing to be fair even though we are talking about a guy who is a fairly proven FPL asset and overall has been producing decent underlying stats.

Like Salah he also has GW9 vs Huddersfield and GW10 vs Cardiff

Pogba

If Pogba really think’s he can get to Barca he’s got to do alot more on the pitch than he has done this season.  Even if you put it down to some degree to the Mourinho affect.  Both of his goals have come from penalties which just leaves the 1 assist in the last 5 games.

This is backed up by his underlying stats which have been woeful.

Everton (H)
Bournemouth (A)
Man City (A)
Crystal Palace (H)

Lukaku

Has been the 1 shining light in the Manchester United attack with 4 goals in his first 4 starts.  However the last 2 games have seen 2 pretty anonymous performances and the temptation is to think that the rest of the Man Utd problems are starting to drag him down as well as he is a service dependent striker.
