Introduction

This is part 2 of the FPL managers who contribute to the FFGeek site with good histories who show their teams each week. This will give people a feel for what other managers are doing. It’s a fairly informal thing with no obligation on anyone and these teams may change at anytime before the deadline without further notice. It won’t cover transfers in real time either. It’s just to give an idea of the trends for the week no more.  The teams are shown as their “final-ish” teams so they could change.  Where they have twitter accounts I have shown this and they may update them there or on our Slack Channel which is part of our subscription Patreon site but this is not guaranteed

My GW9 team after the first free transfer out of 2 (avoiding any price changes on Thursday), I have transferred out Son to Bruno Fernandes who will be my captain this GWk and Istill has 0.6m in the bank. Today I will probably change Kane to Vardy

Transfer summary:  Son out Fernandes in.  Kane out to Vardy in likely

Here’s the team with the Son transfer complete

Hi folks – here’s a third and final more detailed update on my GW9 Wildcard.

First of all I think the first thing I would say is that this is one of the Wildcards I’ve tinkered least on! I’d say the main reasons for that are the number of red and yellow flags on players this week and secondly the clear fixture swing means I settled pretty quickly on what I was after. Of course, this is not to say that my Wildcard is going to work out! I’m taking some pretty big risks with not covering high ownership players by electing to sell both Kane and Son and not going with the likes of Patrick Bamford for example. And I can’t say I’m 100% comfortable on having triple Villa, even though they do have this incredible fixture run coming up.

So I’ll cut to the chase, here’s what I’ve settled on.

Goalkeepers

I’ve stuck with Martinez and Forster. I could have gone for the 4.0m Villa keeper as back-up, but I didn’t want to block having 2 outfield Villa players so I’ve stuck with this.

Defenders

The 3 Cs of Chilwell, Cancelo and Coufal are still here along with Williams as the cheap 3.9 filler who might get a bit of gametime over the next couple of weeks. I did mull over Dias over Chilwell. I like the thought of having double City defence as their defensive stats are good. But Chilwell’s attacking potential is difficult to ignore even if his fixtures do turn more challenging from GW10 and like with Villa I don’t want to block having 2 City attackers further down the line.

Defender 5 is proving a tricky decision – it’s down to Walker-Peters or Justin. I’ve got KWP at 4.5m as I’ve ridden his price rise, but 4.7m Justin has more appeal over the next 4 weeks at least. The move hinges on compromises elsewhere as well which I’ll go on to when I get to the midfield.

Midfielders

Fernandes, Ziyech and Grealish have been in all my drafts so no changes here. The second premium slot was where I was deliberating and Salah’s positive Covid Test this week means I’ve moved him for Kevin De Bruyne. Then looking forwards, the plan is to leave enough money in the bank to buy Salah back in GW10 or GW11 with Bruno then dropping out again. Midfielder 5 at the moment is Soucek, but this is where I am torn. Looking at my front 8, Soucek would be player number 8 every week on my plan. Therefore, do I need to spend 4.9m here or can I drop to 4.5m and use the extra funds (this would enable Justin over KWP.) Tough call this and I’ll be honest I’ll probably mull this until Saturday now!

Forwards

Pretty settled here – it’s DCL, Watkins and Vardy. DCL remains from my GW1 team – there’s 3 good attaking fixtures there before I even need to contemplate a sale with the added bonus of Richarlison and Digne back from suspensions and James Rodriguez fully fit. Choosing the cheap option was tough – there’s arguments for and against all 3. Bamford has an incredible xG and high ownership with tough fixtures, though the Leeds attack does look somehat fixture-proof. What I would say though is he’s outperforming his previous form and expectations at the moment – is he simply a better more cinical player this season or will he regress to the mean?

Adams is now starting to get points where the stats said he would earlier in the season. Saints fixtures are a right mixed bag going forward though and I do worry he’ll find the next few weeks difficult without his partner in crime Danny Ings. So I’ve gone for Watkins and this is a fixture pick really. He’s got the best games coming up over the next few weeks and probably has penalties too even if he’s still a bit of an unknown quantity in the EPL. Whatever, happens he can be sideways moved for either of the other 2 cheaps I’ve mentioned there.

So now the final spot – Jamie Vardy. This has been a difficult call. Vardy’s stats when you take away his penalties are rather unexciting…but historically this has generally been the case for him. And you just can’t ignore the upcoming fixtures. Liverpool in GW9 doesn’t hold any fear for me with only 1 of their first-choice back 4 fit and then there’s Fulham, Sheffield United and Brighton. Let’s just say, I’m really hoping for a Vardy party!

Harry Kane

The player I’m sad to lose is Harry Kane,. He’s posting incredible numbers this season and no doubt he’ll be back again later on; as such, this is another motivation for having Vardy. I worry about having 3 cheaper strikers as I know at some point I’ll probably want Kane back or I’ll want a fully-fit Sergio Aguero in City’s amazing fixture run. It’s a much easier move when the funds are already there up top. Going back to Kane (and Son I guess too), I fully expect them to produce over the next few weeks. What I don’t see is Spurs smashing 4 or 5 goals a game over their next few matches. And if you add to this that Kane and Son won’t be heavy Captain then the damage if or when it occurs should be more limited. For me, the ceiling with KDB and Vardy is much higher hence why I feel now is the time to take the risk, even if it feels a tad uncomfortable doing so!

Another variation

the other variation I considered on my team was going 3-5-2 with Brewster as the 3rd striker and an upgrade on that 5th mid. Foden for example would still allow me the Salah move in GW10 or 11 and would give me triple City for that brilliant fixture run, Pep Roulette notwithstanding. Rodriguez would be more of an upgrade in that slot, but it then means I’d need to find funds elsewhere for that so would be a -4 in GW10 or waiting to GW11 so that combining with my thoughts on having funds up top has what’s thrown me off this option.

Captain schedule

my projected line-up over the next 8 gameweeks therefore gives me these possible Captain picks each week:

GW9 – Fernandes (WBA); DCL (ful)
GW10 – KDB (BUR); Vardy (FUL)
GW11 – KDB (FUL)
GW12 – Salah (ful); Vardy (BHA)
GW13 – KDB (WBA)
GW14 – KDB (sou); Grealish (wba)
GW15 – Salah (WBA); KDB Or Aguero?! (NEW)
GW16 – Salah (new); Or buy back Kane (FUL)

So here’s the team set-up for Saturday with Bruno Fernandes sitting as Captain at the moment:

If I make any further changes I’ll post on Twitter on Saturday morning with the Fantasy Football Geek tag in. All the best for GW9 folks!

Fantasy Premier League GW9 teams

Kris O

Kris’s last 4 seasons overall rank were 39k, 44k, 46k and 23k

GW8 points: 76  (FPL average 55) Total points: 463, Overall Rank: 995k, green arrow: 563k Team Value: £103.0m

Gw8 was kind to me and I’ve scraped into the top million for the first time this season. After all of the various rumours of illness and injuries for my players I am now sitting with Salah as my only definite absentee. I am sticking with my intial plan of Brewster (my only other flagged player) to Watkins. My decision is then whether to take a -4 to replace Salah with Mane, Bruno, KDB or Sterling. If Salah is out for two games I’ll definitely sell. If it’s only one game it feels like a 50:50, with a question of whether my player coming in will outscore Foden by four points. Without Salah , captaincy is between Calvert Lewin and Grealish, though tempting to put the armband on Bruno or Mane if I bring them in.

Fingers crossed Fridays press conferences give some useful insight.

Transfer summary:  Likely Brewster out Watkins in.  Another transfer TBC

Chris Tucker

Chris’s last 3 seasons overall rank were 41k, 17k and 1k

GW8 points: 75  (FPL average 55) Total points: 456, Overall Rank: 1,214k, green arrow: 592k Team Value: £101.4m

I’d envisaged taking a hit this week, likely removing Son and Kane for Fernandes and Werner or Vardy.  However, the Salah illness news has made me reassess and I’m currently planning on a single transfer of Salah for Fernandes, thus avoiding the hit.  Before I do that, I’ll wait to see what Klopp has to say at his press conference.

Longer term, I need to think about transitioning to capitalise on favourable fixtures for City and Leicester. But I think I’ll leave that for another week!
Best of luck to you all.
