Sterling

A goal and 2 assists for the Man City attacking midfielder against Stoke makes it 6 goals and 2 assists in 5 starts plus 2 as sub.  That’s some record.  He’s scored or assisted in every game apart from the Chelsea game.  Although his underlying stats started relative quietly this has changed.   In the 3 hidings of the last 4 where Man City have scored 18 goals the stats have been quite mind boggling.  The great thing is that he’s multi functional.  Most midfielders are either goal scorers or assisters.  Sterling is producing underlying stats which show that he can score and assist.  He could easily join the very rare “double double” club of 10 goals and 10 assists which last season only saw Sanchez, Alli and Firmino as members.

Aguero coming back could end the certainty of a start if Guardiola returns to the 2 striker system.  The midweek Champions League lineup will be interesting as anyone rested has to be in with a good chance of starting in GW9.  Thats notwithstanding general Pep unpredictability.

If you were looking for negatives you would say that he’s currently running at underlying stat levels way above anything he’s previously achieved and that he’s historically under performed his underlying stats whereas at the moment he’s overperforming.  The question is has Guardiola moved City and the players to a new level or is this just a wave that’s currently at it’s top.

Jesus

If you ignore the Everton game where Kyle Walker was sent off Jesus has absolutely turned up in every game.  65 minutes or not he’s produced great underlying stats.  6 goals and an assist in 7 starts is incredible and the Everton game is the only game he hasn’t returned a goal or assist in.  On the pitch he will score that’s for certain.

It will be interesting to see how things go from here.  Assuming Aguero is fit at the weekend, which seems to be what the endless City tweets are alluding to,  then could the Stoke game change Pep’s mind to a single striker system.  It would certainly keep Jesus and Aguero fresher although it would be an FPL nightmare.

The rotation and selection is the only issue and that affects his captain potential.  When on the pitch he will return.

Abraham

2 goals against Huddersfield, making it 4 goals in 7 starts, has cemented his role as a viable cheap forward asset for our FPL teams.  He has also backed this up with good underlying stats in the games you’d be looking for him to be a goal threat.  Good fixtures to come too

Jones

There’s normally a groan when you get even the smallest report of a possible injury to Phil Jones so it was a surprise that he turned up and his more expensive normal partner Bailly didn’t at the weekend.  United have now got 7 clean sheets in their 8 games this season.  Only Valencia has earned more bonus points than Jones’s 6 and that was purely down to Valencia’s wonder strike vs Everton.  No defender in FPL has earned more in the FPL bonus point system stats.  Don’t look for attacking points though, his goal threat is negligible. He’s a great value clean sheet and reasonable bonus provider only.

David Silva

Scored for the first time this season at the weekend although surprisingly didn’t add any assists to his 6 already.  Provides a crucial role for creativity at the top end of the pitch and that’s why he should be more certain of continuing minutes than Sane and Sterling.  Has been prone to quiet games and you could say that in 4 of the 8 games he has provided less assist threat than you would expect.  When you’re not producing alot on the scoring front that could become a worry at some stage but certainly it’s anything but at the moment

The Sinking Ships

These are the 5 most transferred OUT players so far in the gameweek.

Mkhitaryan

1 goal and 5 assists looks pretty good in your first 8 games.  However 3 consecutive blanks plus a turn of the fixtures and 3 substitutions at an average point of 67 minutes in your last 3 games is not going to win you any friends.  With Manchester City mids generating fantastic returns then you’re an easy target for a transfer out.  It’s times like this you need the underlying stats to show you there’s hope that things will turn around.  While they are relatively good on the assist front on a cumulative basis they have absolutely fallen apart over the last 3 games.  Away to Huddersfield isn’t the worst time to hold but Man City home to Burnley is a fairly tempting trade.

Kante

Thigh injury out until around GW11.  Not sure why FPL managers had him in the first place as he seems an expensive way to get a 5th mid.  He has scored the once but he’s primarily there to provide a defensive contribution rather than an attacking one.  It could open the door for Fabregas to start but after the disaster that was the Palace game Conte could move Luiz into midfield to try and shore things up rather than putting Fabregas there.

Alli

When you see midfielders £1m cheaper getting double figure FPL point hauls for Man City and Alli is providing you with a blank it’s very tempting to jump ship or jump off the sinking ship in this case.  1 returning game in the last 5 isn’t helping the holding case.  Cumulatively his underlying goal threat stats have been the same as his 18 goal total of last season.  However in 5 of the 8 games played so far his underlying shooting stats have just not been good enough.  The Bournemouth game while he blanked did at least arrest a slide of 4 very poor goal threat performances

 Morata

With Morata seemingly going to be fit for the weekend as  Conte has been saying he even hoped to have him fit for the midweek UCL game it seems a strange time to sell.  Although the fact that he’s flagged at 50% on the FPL site for GW9 can’t have helped.  6 goals and 2 assists in 5 starts and 1 sub  appearance is an incredible start to say the least.  His underlying stats have been good too and whats more incredibly consistent.  He’s also guaranteed to start when fit as I expect he won’t go anywhere near the domestic cups.

West Brom (A)

Davies

2 goals and 3 assists and fantastic underlying stats have meant Davies has started the season as probably the most inform defender.  The weekend was the 2nd time that Davies has mysteriously not started due to illness. It seems that Pochettinho’s penchant for misinformation and silence is not just reserved for injury returns but those “suddenly ” injured as well.  It seems that Davies will be fit for the UCL game in midweek.  The Danny Rose saga continues,  like he was supposed to be fit GW8 he’s supposed to be fit GW9. There’s even  photo-shopped pictures of him in training.  Whatever , I’ve filed it with the junk mail that comes through the door ever day.  I’ll believe it when I see it.

Given Davies form it will take something for Rose to replace him anyway.
