Nothing really that surprising in either line up. Cameron returned with Pulis playing 5 defensive players and not dropping either Shotton or Wilkinson.  Newcastle won with a stoppage time winner from Cisse assisted by sub Marveaux after walters gave them the lead from the spot.  Cabaye equalised from a free kick with the assist being credited to Sissoko

Defensive stats: Both sides had good defensive stats with Stoke finally producing them by keeping Newcastle shooting from distance.

Player shooting stats:  Only Cisse and then Walters had stats even coming close to being worth mentioning

Pen box touches:     Crouch by a distance followed by Cisse Walters and Gouffran

Chances created:    Cabaye and Tiote

Most advanced midfielders:  Sissoko and Shotton although out on the flank

Most involved players in attacking positions for each team:   Cabaye/Sissoko and Crouch

The Sissoko bandwagon with another assist was given more cause to rumble on and with the next game home to the very vulnerable Wigan home defence then it will undoubtedly continue.  However, although he had a good average advanced position and a high involvement in attacking areas both of which are positives, a lack of penalty area touches and shots in the box or chances created does bring some doubts as its been on the back of a few ordinary underlying stats.  Its hard to ignore the returns though and I would have had him in my team myself if I could have afforded him but there is reason for doubt thats for sure.

Its 12 games now without a clean sheet and this was the first game in a while with some good underlying stats although it was mainly through preventing shots in the box. Exposure to the defence through a £3.9m Wilson is one thing but anyway else is just not worth it in my mind.

 Liverpool 3 Spurs 2

Liverpool

  • 01 Jones
  • 02 Johnson
  • 03 Jose Enrique
  • 05 Agger
  • 23 Carragher Booked
  • 08 Gerrard
  • 10 Phillippe Coutinho (Allen – 59′ )
  • 19 Downing
  • 21 Lucas
  • 07 Suarez
  • 15 Sturridge (Henderson – 88′ )

Substitutes

  • 42 Gulacsi
  • 37 Skrtel
  • 47 Wisdom
  • 14 Henderson
  • 24 Allen
  • 31 Sterling
  • 33 Shelvey

Tottenham Hotspur

  • 25 Lloris
  • 05 Vertonghen Booked
  • 20 Dawson
  • 28 Walker
  • 32 Assou-Ekotto (Carroll – 90′ )
  • 08 Parker
  • 11 Bale
  • 22 Sigurdsson
  • 29 Livermore (Holtby – 84′ )
  • 18 Defoe
  • 19 Dembele

Substitutes

  • 24 Friedel
  • 16 Naughton
  • 33 Caulker
  • 06 Huddlestone
  • 23 Holtby
  • 46 Carroll
  • 41 Coulthirst

Again no line up surprises.  With Lennon injured AVB opted for the more defensive minded Livermore instead of Holtby and Coutinho looks to have cemented his place over Henderson

Spurs self destructed with 2 errors to lose this when they really should have pushed on to win easily.  Downing Gerrard pen and Suarez scored asisted by Saurez and Enrique.  Vertonghen scored 2 from 2 Bale assists

Defensive stats:  A game of lots of chances and you would say that neither side produced very good defensive stats.

Player shooting stats:    Siggy led the stats followed by Vertonghen Bale and then Sturridge and Suarez

Pen box touches:    Suarez and Sturridge

Chances created:    Bale and Downing

Most advanced midfielders:   Downing although wide out and Bale

Most involved players in attacking positions for each team:  Suarez and Bale/Siggy

I would recommend holding defenders from both sides although there was nothing in this game to suggest why, as it was fairly open and error strewn from Spurs.  Those fantasy premier league managers holding Sturridge instead of Suarez on the basis that their underlying stats (and actual stats when both starting) not being that different were given a set back with a goal and assist from Suarez and a blank from Sturridge.  However again, in terms of shots and chances created there was little in it and Sturridge in fact had the edge.  However Suarez’s overall involvement and sheer class won over the day with returns. Again I’m sticking with Suarez as I just find it hard to ignore the striker who leads virtually all the underlying stats striker categories and is only 5 points behind the overall FPL points scorer RVP.

Bales shooting stats were relatively quiet for him with most coming from outside the box but he created the chances for others better than anyone else and got the rewards with 2 assists.  Add to this his set piece dominance and an increasingly more central advanced position then you’ve got an essential player no matter what the opposition is

With Dempsey injured Siggy is getting some game time and although no returns today is starting to produce some underlying stats that suggest it will only be a matter of time.  £3m cheaper than Bale its not enough to ignore Bale but maybe an option when Spurs get a run of good games to double up.
