This article was written before Wednesdays games and doesn’t include stats from those games

This is the 2nd article in the player rankings series. There’s also defenders and GKs rankings

All the stats are from the free site understat

Methodology

I’ve ordered the players by their underlying stats ranking when I convert their xG and xA over the season into FPL points for goals and assists. That figure is adjusted for the average minutes played over the last season.  Players with current penalty responsibility get that included in their stats.  Those currently without eg Rashford don’t

I’ve then provided a range of different stats to help you choose which player is the best for a transfer in.

Stats definitions

Form s/10/5. These are the form rankings for season, for the last 10 gameweeks and the last 5 game weeks. They are the average minutes adjusted rankings once the xG and xA are converted into FPL points. The lower the number the better the ranking.

Av minutes: The average minutes played over the season. Non appearances aren’t counted.

PPM – the fantasy premier league sites points per match.

Fixture ease: this is ranking for attacking players over the next 6 gameweeks from my fixture ease schedule article. The lower the number the better the fixtures

ATGS: the anytime goal scorer bookies odds for GW33 for £1 invested.

VFM: A Value for Money calculation by dividing the theoretical season goal and assist points by the players value. The higher the better.

The schedule ranked by midfielders underlying stats over the season

Here is the link to the google spreadsheet. You can go to file>make a copy and then sort it how you like.

The schedule is not adjusted for Fixtures however the players fixture ease ranking is included along with a load of other stats. 1,152 ( approx 40%) minutes required

Comments on a few players

Remember Wednesday nights games stats are not included

Sterling

Sterlings underlying stats have been excellent all season.  It’s just that he, and his colleagues who receive his key passes, aren’t putting the ball in the net.  In fact no player in the league has had his colleagues miss more xG than Sterling.  In fact, his underlying xG/xA aren’t that much different than his 17 goal 15 assist season of last season.  It’s just whether you think his luck is going to change and he and his colleagues will start putting the ball in the back of the net.

Fernandes

Fernandes definitely gets a big break from penalties in his stats but to be fair Man Utd did get 12 penalties last season and have had 11 awarded this season.  The most in the league.  So those duties as well as set pieces are relevant.  Strip penalties out and it’s a pretty ordinary picture with a very small percentage of shots coming from inside the area.  This doesn’t affect De Bruyne’s returns it’s just whether Fernandes is in that category and how many penalties more you think United will get.

Antonio

Antonio has been playing as a striker for sometime and his underlying stats have shown up well. Like Sterling he just can’t put the ball into the back of the net and that is the difference between underlying stats and actual returns.   These underlying numbers finally came to fruition with a goal and an assist tonight v Chelsea.  These stats aren’t within his figures.  If Haller is fit (not on the bench today) and  recalled, Antonio has played as his strike partner.

Almiron

A virtual repeat of what I said about Antonio although tonight Almiron scored from the bench in what I am assuming was just rest related rotation.

Mane and Salah

Both players have produced pretty ordinary numbers over the last 5 gameweeks but Mane has extended that to the last 10 games although his clinical finishing has seen Mane still earn 5.5 Points Per Match over those 10 weeks.  This isn’t a surprise from Mane as he is a good finisher but his underlying stats are normally way better.  No such issues for Salah over the last 10.  The last 5 can be a bit misleading anyway due to the small sample size.

Mahrez

Mahrez is a guy just hindered by his average gametime which is over the 3 periods looked at is around 60 minutes.  Over the season his xG/xA is excellent.  However,  despite the fact that he’s averaged 5.2 points per match over the last 10 his underlying stats have dropped off over that period.  He’s another guy who can over perform his stats though.

Pulisic

The guys underlying stats are incredible.  1200 minutes played is starting to look like enough to make a judgement on although there is  no PL history to fall back on for sustainability.
