fantasy premier league – new player profile – Man City’s Stevan Jovetic

New player profiles

Stevan Jovetic is a 23 year old 6 foot 1 inch striker from Montenegro who has transferred from Fiorentina to Man City for £22.88m

Stevan Jovetic has played first team football for 6 seasons.  Between 2006-2008 for Partizan Belgrade and then between 2008-2013 for Fiorentina in Serie A.  He is also an international for Montenegro and has played 28 times for the full International side.  He has had a good scoring record at all levels.

Jovetic is at his best as a 2nd striker.  He is multi dimensional and can drop and pick up the ball between the lines and drift wide, although his crossing has a poor success rate stat. His chances created stats  are good which gives him an added dimension to his game.  He has the ability to get in to the box by drifting or dribbling but also has a fierce shot from distance.  He stats shows that he shoots alot but his conversion rate is pretty ordinary.  However this is a natral by product of  strikers who shot alot from distance.   His style makes im seem far more like Tevez (except tall?) as compared to Negredo who seems more like Dzeko.

A surprising lack of quotes from player or manager on his arrival

Fantasy premier league perspective

I think I’ll be repeating alot of the themes I put in my Negredo article.

Firstly lets remind ourselves of Citys early fixtures.   I’ve ranked them as having the 2nd best opening 6 fixtures.  Here they are:

Newcastle H,  Cardiff A,  Hull H,  Stoke A,  Man Utd H, Aston Villa A

So with these fixtures and a new attack minded manager in Pellegrini, having a City attacking player in your team for GW1 is an absolute must in my mind.

Aguero at £11.0m is your safe bet as he will definitely play in my mind and will be the striker furtherest up the pitch.  Then you’ve got 3 strikers in Negredo, Jovetic (both £9.5m) and Dzeko at £7.5m.  Who at of those 3 will play and where is not clear at the moment but will hopefully become clearer during pre-season.  Dropping back in to midfield, Silva becomes your option at £9.0m but even his position is a little unclear if Pellegrini goes for 4-3-3 and puts left footed Negredo on the left of the front 3.

As I said in my Negredo article, Its a little early in pre-season and City are without a number of key players at this stage to assess what formation and where if at all Joevtic will play unfortunately.  Historically Pellegrini seems to have played a version of 4-4-2 which has been described as 4-2-2-2 with the 2 behind the strikers going out as necessary but the width provided by the full backs.  However,  there is obvious speculation that the Sporting Director ex Barcelona man Txiki Begiristain sees the club playing 4-3-3 in the Barca style.  However,  there is also the current premier league template of 4-2-3-1 which Pellegrini could play.  Then Jovetic could play in the midfield 3.  Not what you want to play £9.5m for as I will generally want to have the striker furtherest up the pitch in my team.  Certainly Rodwells comments in the press that Pellegrini has them pressing high up the pitch ala Barca gives some credence to 4-3-3.  So, if Pellegrini plays 2 strikers though or even 3 in a front 3 then at £9.0m Jovetic has value potential if his starting role can be established.  All fantasy premier league managers will have to accept some rotation with the strikers though although my view is this will be less with Aguero as the main man

What about his goal scoring record?   His record last year of 13 goals and 5 assists for Fiorentina is good without being anything exceptional.   However, his goal and assist return per minute was every 130 minutes.  Negredos last season was a return every 100 minutes (nearly every game obiously)  RVP’s last year was a return every 80 minutes.  Aguero did the same in the previous season although fell back to every 130 minutes last season.  Dzeko was every 91 minutes last season despite having a missing chances reputation. Tevez last year was every 100 minures or so.   Benteke was every 129 minutes.  Berba every 150 minutes or so.  In this stat of returns per minute and pure goal scoring record he’s way behind Negredo who is the same price.   Sevilla also scored 58 goals compared to Fiorentins’s 71.

So to summarise, in my mind establishing game time and position is a first.  I’ll be watching and keeping you up to date on City throughout pre-season.  My view at the moment is that Negredo at the same price seems the better option if his role can be established.  His scoring record is better and he will probably play higher up the pitch than Jovetic and therefore get more good goal scoring chances.  Both are second to Aguero but Aguero certainly comes at a higher price.
