News

Here’s the fantasy premier league news update for Wednesday 21 August 2013 with news on Cornelius, Puncheon, Elmander, Barkely, Arsenal and price rises and falls

Andreas Corneluis

Budget £5.5m striker Andreas Cornelius is fit and ready to play at the weekend in GW2 against Man City.  This is a young 20 year old Danish International striker who was top scorer in the Danish league last year with  18 goals and 5 assists in 32 games.  He’s also played 9 games with 5 goals and 2 assists for the Danish National team which is a pretty impressive return.    He’s a real prospect in my mind and an option for a cheap striker.  No striker in fantasy premier league at this price or less got any points other than 2 for turning up and the  striker owned by more than anyone at this price, Anelka,  was very poor against Saints at the weekend.  Cardiff have good fixtures coming up afre Man City and Ive ranked them 4 on the fixture ease list

GW2  Man City H,  GW3  Everton H,  GW4  Hull A,  GW5 Spurs H,  GW6,  Fulham A,  Newcastle H

Definitely an option for me.  Hard to know who will drop out though.  I can’t see it being Campbell or Bellamy so that leaves Kim and Whittingham.

Jason Puncheon

The £5.5m attacking midfielder has joined Palace from  Southampton on loan.  He had a great season last season getting 5 goals and 6 assists from limited game time after Pocettino joined never fancied him.  His points per minute was 19 ppm, which was the same as Mirallas and better than Nolan.  Whether he can replicate this at Palace is questionable given how they struggled at the weekend.  He’s also quite expensive for a Palace midfielder at £5.5m.  Crystal Palace have the 19th best fixtures so there’s no hurry to jump on board but he’s worth monitoring if he can replicate last years form.   The bad news is the he could end the prospects of £4.5m midfield cheapie Jerome Thomas, who’s currently injured, on the left flank

Johan Elmander

The former Bolton 32 year old striker joins Norwich on a season long loan from Galatasaray.  With Hooper injured  I guess its understandable.  Whether it gives a view that Norwich will play 2 strikers and that’s why they need 4 strikers (Becchio the other) remains to be seen.  I would ne worried as a Hoolahan owner myself.  He doesn’t have a bad scoring record.  Last year it was 4 goals and 1 assist from 11 starts and 5 as sub.  That’s a goal or assist every 157 minutes which is not bad.  With Bolton only 3 seasons ago he got 10 goals and 6 assists from 37 games at a return every 193 minutes which is really nothing to write home about.

I can only see him as back up to Hooper and RVW.

Ross Barkley

If you’re still wondering whether to buy Ross Barkley then here’s some positive words from Martinez to help you:

“He’s mature and he’s desperate to keep that place. I think when you’ve got good competition for places in football, the mentality narrows down really quickly – all he wants to do is keep that place and keep enjoying his football.

“That’s what I want him to do. He’s been performing in that manner throughout pre-season in different spells and now he wants to make sure that continues.”

“The goal that he scored was a wonderful piece of skill and a wonderful piece of quality but I was really happy with his contribution, the responsibility he took and his performance,” Martinez told the club’s official website.

“Any youngster could be very, very proud of what he did. He got on the ball and he made us play.

To have regular gametime he needs to replace Gibson or Osman.  Does Fellaini in midfield give them enough defensive solidity cover in 4-2-3-1 to make Gibson Superfluous or does Gibsons more sitting role (as Fellaini still drifts forward make him essential).  Osman is still a possibility to be replaced as he hasn’t been in that great form.

Personally I took the gamble.  Its hard to see Barkely as anything other than undroppable after the weekend.

Fenerbache 0 Arsenal 3

Arsenal quietened the anti Wenger  frenzy for a few days with an excellent performance in Turkey.  Particularly Ramsey Gibbs and Walcott.  Here’s the line up

Arsenal: Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny (Jenkinson 33), Gibbs, Rosicky, Wilshere, Ramsey, Cazorla, Giroud, Walcott (Monreal 87). Subs not used: Fabianski, Podolski, Sanogo, Frimpong, Gnabry.
Booked: Szczesny.
Goals: Gibbs 51, Ramsey 64, Giroud (pen) 77.

Koscielny suffered a deep cut to the face and it remains to be seen how this affects his future gametime  with Vermaelen injured it does give some potential for £4.5m cheapie Jenkinson as Sagna goes to CB.  Nothing said on how he will  be out long  to make it worthwhile but we’ll keep you up to date

Price rises and falls

Already mentioned Barkley and Coleman rising £0.1m

Luke Shaw increases by £0.1m to £4.6m.  I’ve said on the site many times that I’m a fan of the Saints defence.  Analysing  last seasons underlying attacking stats  I thought Clyne had the best stats so he’s not the only option

No price falls

That’s it hope you feel up to date
