FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE PRESEASON REVIEW AND POTENTIAL GW1 LINEUPS PART 2

In this article we’ll look at the main issues for each team in the pre-season as well as the form players and then give the potential GW1 line up on the information so far. You may also want to refer to our article on potential GW1 risks caused by Confederation Cup participation and the Euro Under 21 competition.  This review doesn’t take into account Fridays games.

Manchester City

Mendy, D Silva and Gundogan look injury doubts to start the season.  Bernardo Silva has not appeared in preseason after the Confederations Cup

For Man City you have to remember the big squad Pep has and his natural desire to rotate.  Therefore things are difficult to predict. Pep has further confused the situation by playing 3 at the back in the last friendly and at the start playing both Aguero and Jesus upfront.  The positional play and gametime of Jesus and Aguero are key elements and unresolved at the moment.

Sane also looks good value at £8.5m so his gametime is crucial.  Although some semblance of a first team did appear in the last friendly it wasn’t conclusive and the formation further confused matters.  Below I’ve shown the 4-1-4-1 formation that he used in the last game against Watford which had Jesus out on the right.  However lets face it were all guessing.  See David Browns focus on Man City

Manchester United

Mata and Herrera have short term injuries which don’t look like they will prevent GW1.  There are a number of longer term injuries

Will £5.5m CB Lindelof start? Will £8.0m mid Pogba play as a CM or an attacking midfielder and who will the 3 in the likely 4-2-3-1 be.  Will £5.5m Blind play LB?

The team that started Barcelona looked like a full strength team apart from Bailly coming on in the 2nd half although with no Herrara and Mata.  The Lindelof situation looks uncertain due to the fact that Bailly hasn’t been partnered with him and he’s had some dodgy games.  Pogba looks destined to be a CM unless someone is signed as a CDM.  Blind looks a good shout at the moment for LB.  At the moment I think Martial is behind Rashford.  Rashford, Mkhitaryan and Lukaku have all shown good preseason form

Newcastle

Lascelles is an injury doubt which throws some confusion on the CB parnership.

Newcastle is a fairly straightforward with £6.0m mid Ritchie and £6.5m forward Gayle the principle targets. £4.5m RB Yedlin looks the best of the Defs although now he has competition from Manquillo which needs monitoring.   Yedlin is covered in Joseph Crilleys focus on 3 value players

Southampton

Van Dijk looks destined to leave so I’ve not included him in the lineups. Cedric, Ward-Prowse and Redmond due to off season competitions have yet to play in preseason making the lineup confusing.  Weirdly Bertrand has yet to feature in pre-season.  I’m not sure why?

The main things to watch will be who out of £6.5m forward Austin and £7.0m Gabbiadini will get the starting striker spot. Also whether £5.5m mid James Ward Prowse can get a starting spot and whether thats in a CM or attacking position.

Due to the above factors I’m not going to guess a lineup.  Austin seems to have started the preseason games which could be a good thing.  Forster, Yoshida and Tadic I have to believe are the long term starters at the moment of relevance.

Spurs

Son looks the doubt with the broken arm.  Rose is supposedly back GW2 but he was supposedly back some months ago.  Spurs are also covered in detail in Joseph Crilleys focus on them.

Formation is the only real doubt but makes little difference as Trippier, Eriksen, Alli and Rose are the natural selections

Stoke

Shawcross has a back injury with no return date

A few points of interest here. Making sure £4.5m RB Johnson starts at RB. Can £5.5m Allen become a CAM? Will £6.0m forward Berahino be the starting striker?

Johnson looks fairly safe judging by preseason especially with Bardsley leaving.  The Allen situation is still uncertain although my bet at the moment is that he would play as a CAM.  Berahino looks he most likely to start as CF.  The sale of Arnautovic looks like it could have opened the door for £5.0m attacking mid Sobhi also known as Ramadan

Swansea

Swansea’s 2 starts look doubtful for GW1.  Llorente due to a broken arm and Chelsea rumours.  Sigurdsson due to Everton interest.

£4.0m RB Rangel is worth monitoring although £4.5m RB Naughton looks the favourite to start.  £4.5m mid Carroll is the best of the £4.5m mids in the league in my view

The last friendly looked like a first choice team pretty much and Naughton again frustrated our desire for a £4.0m defender.

Watford

With a new manager, alot of injuries  and a number of changes in preseason games I won’t attempt to predict a lineup.  £4.5m defender Prodl and £5.5m midfielder Capoue are the main targets.

WBA

CB Evans has an ankle injury with no return date and McAuley has a thigh injury but expected back for GW1.

New acquistion £6.0m Rodriguez looks unlikely to lead the line with Rondon taking that role.

£6.0m mid Chadli seems to have a good shout to get into the team.   The hunt for a £4.5m defender seems like it’s hit a dead end.  £4.5m CB Hegazi’s potential won’t be known with McAuley not due back to GW1 and Evans injured with no return date.  He could be a very short term option depending on Evans but Dawson can still play CB with Nyom going to right back.

West Ham

With a number of injuries and new players and a squad over loaded with AMs I’m going to leave West Ham until the situation settles down a bit
