Fantasy premier league – rating the defences coming into GW21 – home and away

Fantasy Premier League

Here’s my rating of all the fantasy premier league defences home and away from 1-40 coming into GW21 Now we’ve got a bit more data 20 gameweeks in to the fantasy premier league season I’ve rated the defences home and away to help with your fantasy premier league defence strategy

I’ve ranked them 1-40 with each defence home and away.  I’ve based it on goals  conceded and clean sheets plus some underlying defensive shots.  They’re ranked in the table below with GC (goals conceded) and CS (clean sheets) in the columns for reference.  If you cant be bothered with the detail then below the table I’ve put a couple of paragraphs with the implications.

Here’s the table:

What does this mean for your fantasy premier league team?

The table identifies 2 types of teams:

1.  The good all round defensive teams that you can hope for home and away clean sheets:

  •  Arsenal (home rank 3, away rank 13) – 9 clean sheets total
  • Chelsea  (home rank 6, away rank 9) – 7 clean sheets total
  • Everton (home rank 11, away rank 8) – 8 clean sheets total

Arsenal are the strongest defensive team overall in my view  The really strong Arsenal away record fell unsurprisingly after the defensive nightmare at Man City but they are still a strong defensive team overall with 8 clean sheets in their last 12 games. Chelsea have recently repaid the clean sheet faith with 3 clean sheets in their last 4 games.   Everton have had a wobble with 6 games without a clean sheet but are in the best overall Group.

Spurs are close to the Group but Sherwoods new attacking philosophy will need some monitoring before they can be the defensive force that AVB’S negativity produced.  Give or take the odd high line disastrous thrashing.  Man City still have some work to do to convince defensively away.  I have faith they will as there are some good parts of the underlying stats.  Nastasic and Kompany fit should help.

2.  The budget teams good at home but not away

  • Hull (home rank 2, away rank 37) – 6 home clean sheets
  • Southampton (home rank 7 , away rank 20) – 4 home clean sheets
  • Stoke (home rank 4, away rank 39) – 4 home clean sheets

Palace are in this group at the moment due to the Pulis effect.  Its now 3 clean sheets in 5 home games.

3.  Expensive teams good at home who struggle away

  • Man City (home rank 1, away rank 27)
  • Liverpool (home rank 7, away rank 31)

I expect City to improve and to move into the first group

On to picking the best defenders in my GK/Defenders “ones to watch”
