fantasy premier league team analysis – a deep dive into the 10 top FPL managers seasons

Fantasy Premier League, top 10 FPL managers

Here’s our fantasy premier league team analysis article where we take a deep dive into the 10 top managers seasons using an analysis tool.  From that we can see what we can learn in determining critical things to focus on for next season.  We also compare their stats to the FFGeek Contributors stats.

Methodology

See the Contributors deep dive article and the last 10 top FPL managers articles to see their final overall ranks

So what I’ve done is put each of the 10 top FPL managers teams plus myself through a team analysis tool called  https://www.anewpla.net/fpl/report/

I’ve taken various things from that to see if we can assess what is critical to your rank.

The players are the top Fantasy Premier League PPMs

Getting correlations can be difficult and often the results have a casino like random as those found on this website

The Spreadsheet

It won’t be that easy to read on a phone but here’s a link to the spreadsheet.  It’s not the most beautiful spreadsheet unfortunately but it should do the job.

You can also see the averages of the 10 top Managers and the average of the 10 best finishing FFGeek Contributors.  It’s not a fair comparison in the sense that I’ve picked the best 10 at the end not the start but you’d think with their history that they would be able to compete anyway.  Only manager 1 and 2 finished inside the top 10k.

So what did we learn?

Unfortunately not much.  It tends to tell us there are many ways to play FPL.  None is more evident than myself and Costas finishing on the same points despite playing the complete opposite way.  He takes hits, ignores the template, seeks out differentials and ignores the captain polls.  I play quite the opposite.  An analysis of our teams would show every different things despite the same points. The 2 sets of analysis I’ve done show little concrete right or wrongs to improve overall rank as you will see above.

I explain a bit more below but if you look at the Contributors analysis article as well as this the things that determined rank weren’t that consistent.  There were conflicting messages on captain points and immediate points from transfers but getting points from attacking players rather than defenders did seem to move with overall rank and then obviously as did your FPL team scoring goals.

Anyway here’s a bit more on the various points

Captain points and immediate points from transfers

Unlike with the Contributors analysis article there didn’t seem to be any correlation between Captain points and overall rank which was interesting.  That was also the case for immediate transfer points which did correlate to some degree with the Contributors but not here.

Positional points

Like the FFGeek Contributors the attacking players did have some degree of correlation except with the 10 top FPL managers it was in the midfield position and not the forward position.  Obviously it depends on how funds are allowed but it certainly seemed to move with overall rank

Goals and assists

Goals if not assists seem to move with overall rank here and it certainly did with the Contributors.

Comparing the 10 top FPL managers and the 10 best finishing FFGeek Contributors

It’s not a fair comparison in the sense that I’ve picked the best 10 at the end not the start but you’d think with their history of not finishing outside the top 10k the last 3 seasons they should be able to compete anyway.

Comparing the overall stats

The FFGeek contributors:

Had better Total points

Took more hits

Had better auto sub results

Got more immediate transfer points

Had better PPMs in all positional categories except defenders

Averaged more goals and clean sheets but less assists

Comparing the player stats

Surprisingly given the above, the 10 top managers had better PPMs for Fernandes, Salah, Mane,Sterling, Martial, Rashford, Son and Alexander Arnold.  Compare that to the FFGeek Contributors who had better PPMs for De Bruyne, Vardy and Aubameyang.  That doesn’t seem consistent with the above so I can only assume the FFGeek Contributors did better with the non premium players as opposed to these ones.

In terms of usage the FFGeek Contributors used Martial and Mane alot more than the 10 top Managers.  The 10 top FPL managers used Alexander Arnold and Son alot more.

Captain usage wasn’t that different.  The only notable difference was the 10 top FPL managers used Sterling more as a captain
