Pete Allaway

Pete’s last 4 season’s overall ranks are 1k, 5k, 5k and 2k

I was very happy to start the new season with a score of 77 points and a gameweek rank of 465k. Still a long way to go but this is one of the best starts I’ve had to an FPL campaign.

Big at the back went well with my team keeping 4 out of a possible 6 clean sheets. The two defenders not to return were both the Liverpool fullbacks. The decision to switch Perisic to Dias before the deadline also worked in my favour for this gameweek.

I was on the right side of the Haaland v Kane debate, and with returns from both Salah and Martinelli, I ended up with 7 of my 11 players returning points.

My early thoughts for gameweek 2 are to roll the FT and give Haaland the captaincy.

GW1 Review

I’m pleased to say it’s a good start to the season. I’m always a bit nervous going into GW1, I think probably due to the time invested in picking that GW1 squad.  Have I got my calls right? Am I on the right premium players? What if my selection is way off the mark? It’s nice therefore to get it out the way and look forward to the weeks to come!

My first team of the season had 6 returners – my 2 premiums did the business with Haaland hitting the ground running and Mo doing what Mo does. I also had returns from Martinelli, Cancelo and Trippier – the latter of which was satisfying as he was a late addition to my squad after I’d received some news that Perisic might not start for Spurs. On the subject of Spurs though, Kulusevski was the big winner for me. He was a calculated hedge based on Spurs’ fixture and Richarlison’s suspension effectively guaranteeing his gametime and he didn’t disappoint. The main negatives for me this week were a flop from my double Liverpool defence and going for the wrong keeper (3 points lost here.) I’m not too worried about either of these though – Trent and Robbo will stay put for the moment (more on that later) and I use bookies odds for my keeper calls and am aware this system certainly isn’t fool-proof.

A tidy 6-figure rank to start off then and amazingly I’m actually top of the Contributor’s League! I think this is only the second time this has happened so I’ll bask in the glory of it for 7 days as I’m well aware I will no doubt be toppled next week, such is the high skill of my fellow managers. Before I have a look at what my plans are for GW2, this season I’m planning a short review section each week when I can where I look at some of the standout things for me from the previous gameweek in a short reflective section.

GW1 Reflection

I only caught 2 live games in GW1, but have managed to see plenty of highlights and review a good bit of data.

The first live game I caught was Crystal Palace vs Arsenal. I thought The Gunners looked very sharp and was impressed with the cohesion in their passing and the fluency in which they built their attacks. Martinelli should have scored before he broke the deadlock in the first half and Zinchenko looked very dangerous and advanced on the left. Jesus looked very busy too and although he didn’t return, I’ve no plans to sell him in the short term and am sure goals and assists are coming imminently. As for Palace, I think they’ll continue to do well at home this season. They posed Arsenal plenty of problems and although I don’t see major fireworks from them, I think they’ll prove sticky to beat at home. They’re on the back-burner for me though until their fixtures improve.

The other live game I watched was Fulham vs Liverpool. Fulham were the better team in the first half and deserved to be ahead at the interval. The introduction of Darwin changed things though and Liverpool offered far more threat in the last half an hour and should have ultimately won the game. Mitrovic was Fulham’s standout player and he looks fitter, stronger and more engaged than 2 seasons ago. He’s on my radar big time for GW8 onwards when Fulham have a lovely run of fixtures – I just hope his price doesn’t rise too much before then. Andreas Pereira was sacrificed a bit by Silva to do a shackling job on Fabinho but showed flashes going forward and had set piece responsibility – he’s fine as a 4.5m filler.

For Pool, Darwin made a huge difference when he came on. His movement off the ball was superb and he easily found pockets of space in and around the penalty box. He’s also a real handful physically – he’s quick, strong and good in the air. He’s straight onto my Watchlist and I’m already thinking about how I can set up a series of moves to have him in my GW4 team, with Robertson the likely Liverpool player I’d have to sacrifice. Liverpool also found a lot of space on the right-hand side in the second-half. Robertson tucked in when he came forward, forcing the centre-halves across somewhat which opened up the right side for Trent and Mo. It’s no surprise Mo picked up 2 returns, but one of the negatives of Trent’s high position was that when Liverpool got turned over in possession, Fulham ruthlessly exploited the space Trent left behind him with Mitrovic the key protagonist. A word on Diaz too – he was quieter than Mo, but still hit the woodwork though posted a low xG of 0.18. If I owned him, I’d probably be starting to think about how I could upgrade him to Darwin, but I think he’s worth watching for at least another week or two.

As for the other games, I only watched highlights and these are my bulleted takeaways!

  • Spurs looked very good going forward, Saints pulled apart at the back. Very quiet game for Kane who was dropping deep a lot. The Spurs full-backs, Son and Kulusevski all posted very encouraging heat maps. Tough game for them at Chelsea in GW2 – will be interesting to see how they fare.
  • Newcastle dominated a very one-sided game versus Forest with Wilson clinical and both Targett and Trippier high up the park and sharing set-pieces. Forest have work to do, Newcastle away to Brighton though in GW2 will be a much better measure of what we expect from them this season.
  • Leeds vs Wolves looked a good fun game. Brendan Aaronson is on my Watchlist now – very busy and heavily involved going forward. Sa had a shocker for Wolves and they don’t seem to have solved their goal-scoring issues from last season. Neto showed lots of flashes of skill but no FPL points threat.
  • It was a good start back to life in the EPL for Bournemouth – their defenders are going to get quite a few set piece returns this season. They’ve got a tough GW2 though away to City – we’ll see how good their defence really is there! Villa have a lot of work to do and Bailey at 5.0m is already looking a flag for a sale soon – their fixtures go very bad in GW4 and if he doesn’t return in GW2, he’s a candidate for a price drop. I’m keeping my eye on the 4.5m to 5.5m bracket for replacements.
  • The Saturday evening game saw Everton give a decent account of themselves, but they lack creativity and need to find goals from somewhere. For Chelsea, I am really worried about not owning Reece James – his stats and position prior to Loftus-Cheek coming on suggest that there’s a haul coming. It’s a tricky GW2 vs Spurs, but I think I need him in my team for GW3.
  • Leicester were perhaps fortunate to be 2-0 up against Brentford and The Bees deservedly came back to take a point. Toney will continue to get steady returns this season and there look to be some other budget midfield and forward options their too – Watchlist updated for them! The Foxes defence is a concern and I suspect I’ll be benching Ward most weeks now in favour of Sanchez.
  • Speaking of Brighton, both they and Manchester United seem to have picked up where they left off last season. Welbeck and Gross both posted good numbers for The Seagulls, it’s just a shame I don’t think I could trust either of these for consistency long term. As for United, there’s serious work to do for Ten Haag here and they’re a wait and see.
  • West Ham vs City was all about Haaland and City dominating possession. Haaland was utterly clinical if you don’t have in your GW2 team, I fear for what he could do to your Overall Rank with his Effective Ownership likely to be through the roof. City starved West Ham of the ball which bodes well for BPS machines like Cancelo, though Scamacca did get one good chance for West Ham and he could be one to watch when their fixtures improve.

I wrote a lot last week. However I gave it John just a few hours before the deadline.  So if you want to get a bit more feel for how I play the game check that out using this link

Last week was a decent start. Captain return in Mo.  Haaland vs Kane panned out.  Not everyone returned of course, but any GW Rank in the top 1M is good.  Not bad to say all my players were in away matches.  Next week they are all at home.  I suspect a higher game week average for GW2 based on that.

My only frustration was my Perisic decision. I wish in hindsight I went Trippier instead of keeping him. Oh well it could pan out I guess.  I am only 5 pts behind on that and Trippier does have tough fixtures in the next 4.

Not the best of starts that’s for sure but its just GW1 and now there’s a higher probability of a green arrow for GW2 😂

The Liverpool triple up of Alexander Arnold, Robertson and Diaz combined for 4 pts and with half of FPL managers having Salah as captain coupled with my captain blank (Kane) there needs no more explaining of a 4.9m rank!

I am sticking with Kane. I wont panic sell like most of the game and will absorb the price drops. Spurs look great and he will get plenty of attacking returns! It was just an anomaly having not taken part in any of 4 goals. Post GW2 with that spurs run I want him in my team! its just a matter of how long I can keep without salah

Moving Doherty for Trippier came good and Trippier looked great! …… but he is my transfer out this week! I want the Man City defensive double up and I think with 6s getting those clean sheets Walker should outscore him in the next 4. So I know have a double up in defence from the 2 best defences, hopefully it works out!

A bit unlucky with Rashford. He could have had at least one return although its the same old United, dreadful!! He was always a 2 week punt so its away to Brentford (hopefully he at least plays) and then he is probably downgraded to free up funds.

Captain will definitely be Haaland!
