Gameweek 34 review:

Well the title race is bubbling up nicely with just a single point in it with five games to go. The heavens opened at the Etihad as Jesus ran amok in a five goal stroll against Watford. And Liverpool finally overcame a stubborn and gritty Everton performance to triumph at Anfield.

The Kane and Son show hit the buffers again as they followed their blank against Brighton with another against Brentford. Which meant that north London rivals Arsenal leapfrogged them into a champions league spot with victory over Man Utd, where a hop skip and jump Bruno missed penalty proved costly. It wasn’t the only hop skip penalty embarrassment either as Jorginho surpassed him with a howler.

Norwich and Watford have one foot in the relegation trap door as Burnley’s back to back wins and new found form has plunged Everton in to the last drop position. Will the toffees come unstuck after 67 years in the top flight ?

My GW34 score, rank and wrap up:

After successfully dodging most free hitters last gameweek , I went head to head with plenty of wildcards instead this week, and came out with a surprising healthy green arrow. That’s now five green arrows and a very pale pink one in six weeks, as my season continues on an upward curve.

I scored 84-4 = 80 Points, with six returners. I outscored the top 10k average by 20 points for the third time in six weeks. Double figure hauls from Robertson, Alonso, Saka and captain Salah, plus returns from Trent and Weghorst meant a rise from 109k to 79k this week, and up from 226k six weeks ago. That’s my highest rank since GW14. Very unexpected.

Robertson now has 16 returns in his last 18 games, an incredible consistency. His double up with Trent is a lovely differential against many. Trent chipped in with a clean sheet too and the captain Mo assist for Robbos goal meant a lovely 32 point return from the Mersey derby. I am very happy to hold my triple Pool for the season with the title race in the balance.

Keeping faith in Saka has been heavily rewarded when many wavered and sold after five blanks in six and Arsenals losing run. Back to back Gunners victories and 21 Saka points from those two games. He chipped in with a goal, assist and full bonus 13 pointer, which could actually have been more before he limped off late on. All eyes on the press conferences on Friday. The benching of Martinelli again was disappointing. He has been a frustrating buy. His potential as a differential is sky high. I benched Ramsdale but one clean sheet in 11 games is pretty awful.

My transfers last week saw me bring in the heavily owned and captained Mason Mount for his double gameweek. Partly as a rank protection move. I brought him in for Maddison who duly blanked and looks sure for more rotation this week between his two euro semi legs. Mount blanked twice, much to the frustration of captainers. I gained a point by giving Mo the armband instead.

The other part of my double transfer saw Alonso come in for the injured Rudiger. In truth I preferred Reece James but had to take Alonso due to funds. How fortunate that worked out. Alonso outscored James by 19 points to 2. A clean sheet and assist in the first game and a volleyed goal in the second. He played much of the game in the opposition penalty area. James owners were incredibly unlucky in that second game. He looked super scary as a non owner. So I thank my lack of funds for going to Alonso and thank Rudiger for getting injured that prompted me to even buy Alonso in the first place.

Alonso had been my arch enemy for much of the season when I owned Rudiger instead so the irony is not lost on me that the Rudiger injury opened the door to Alonso who then went nuts for me after I had spent much of the season dodging him.

You would have put your house on Cancelo getting a return in a five goal mauling of Watford at one end of the field at least, especially with his goal threat and city’s strong defence. But he blanked. Surely there are big points ahead. The fixtures for City are very encouraging. He remains my only City asset.

Weghorst had a cheeky assist and put up some improved stats. Burnley are in form and scrapping for their lives. it says a lot when he is my form striker. Broja now on eleven successive blanks and out of the team. Cucho is crocked. I definitely feel very light up top.

I threw De Gea in for the double gameweek with little expectation v Arsenal and Chelsea with save points my only realistic hope. He didn’t exceed my expectations. Five points across the two games. I didn’t mind him picking the ball out of the net from both Saka and Alonso as it happened.

Son blanked v Brentford but I am never too unhappy if Spurs blank as it means Kulusevski and Kane have blanked too. Kulu and Kane were amongst my biggest rank threats as they always are. I still remain in a minority in that Son v Kane tussle.

So what next:

We now have confirmation that Man City will play their outstanding double in GW36 rather than GW37. My initial reaction was positive as Cancelo will now double on my GW36 bench boost week and the more doublers, the less chance of rotation from singles whipping points off the bench. I also didn’t fancy competing with City triple ups from the GW37 free hitters if it dropped there. I only have Cancelo. It does weaken the GW37 free hit appeal with no City there.

I would probably only want De Bruyne. Any other City attacker seems a rotation risk and it’s very easy to still own one and miss out anyway when the goals are spreads so wide. I can’t get to De Bruyne without losing either Salah or Son. Neither jump out as sells. Not this week anyway. There will be plenty jumping from Spurs in the double GW36 but with my bench boost planning, I am going to find it hard to own any City attackers anytime soon.

What transfers am I considering ??

I have 0.1M in the bank and one free transfer.

At the forefront of my thoughts now is my one remaining chip, my bench boost, which I am playing in GW36.

The bench boost continues to be an annoying distraction and one i would rather not have round my neck. For those who can wildcard straight into a bench boost, it holds plenty of potential, for those trying to construct it with sub optimal transfers, it’s far from ideal. There is a lot to be said for getting it out of your hair early.

I have three transfers I want to make over the next two weeks as part of my bench boost plan. That’s a minimum four point hit either this week or next.

I want to turn De Gea into Schmeichel who doubles in both GW36 and GW37. I want to turn Weghorst into Pukki who doubles in GW36. And I have the injured Cucho who needs replacing too. I have limited options too which, with budget, would mean a cheap Watford doubler, or Mateta who has one game but it’s at home to Watford before he doubles in GW37. I am currently 0.1M short of buying Dennis.

That potentially leaves me with 14 doubles plus Broja, for a -4, with a bench of Schmeichel / Ramsdale, Dier, Jao Pedro ( all x2 ) and Broja. Or 13 doubles plus Mateta and Broja. Far from ideal. Not an inspiring bench.

I can carry the transfer and make three next week, or make one transfer and do two next week, both involve a -4 in GW36. De Gea to Schmeichel doesn’t jump out as a great transfer this week when De Gea plays Brentford and Schmeichel has Spurs away. Weghorst plays Watford and probably has a better fixture than Pukki. And I can’t upgrade Cucho without the other transfers. None of the three moves help much this week but prices are moving against me which could prompt me.

If I wait until GW36, there is always the danger of that -4 turning into -8 with just one other issue emerging. So there is a case to just bring in Schmeichel and Pukki early this week, then just assess the best Cucho replacement with more information next week. Any other emerging issues then only cost -4. I also then have the option to drop Martinelli to Dewsbury Hall or Ramsay, if Martinelli isn’t playing and spend more on my third striker, which would include Dennis.

I also need to monitor the fitness of Saka. If he happened to be confirmed injured, then he could be Dewsbury Hall, and Cucho could be Watkins who plays Norwich this week and then doubles in GW36 and GW37.

I am also looking at a bolder play but it involves losing Mason Mount and it involves -4 this week and next, which of course means any other issues turns that into a -8 next week. So it’s more high risk and involves selling a Chelsea attacker but I do like it.

I could sell Mount to Ramsay. That gives me the cash to do Cucho to Watkins. It gives me two Villa players when they play Norwich at home this week, followed by double gameweeks in GW36 and GW37. It’s highly likely Chelsea rotate ahead of the FA cup final and Mount plays only once in GW36. Ramsay has started the last 18 games. He could have two extra games to Mount, so the sacrifice to get Watkins is tempting.

I can do Mount to Ramsay and Cucho to Watkins this week to take advantage of Villa v Norwich. Then I can do De Gea to Schmeichel and Broja to Pukki next week. It means I can keep Weghorst as my single game player instead of Broja who is out of form and less secure. 14 doublers and a bench of Schmeichel / Ramsdale x2, Dier x2, Pukki x2 and Weghorst v Villa is a decent looking bench.

It would also give me four doubles in GW37, which I can easily turn into 5-6. I wouldn’t want more when I have my Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea and Spurs players.

So as always, lots of options and big decisions to be made

My GW35 team:

I have some decent captain candidates. Salah is my likely captain but Newcastle away is not easy. I have Son who faces a Leicester team that will be heavily rested ahead of the Euro semi final 2nd leg. I probably favour Son but it looks like Mo will be most captained and well over 100% effective ownership including captaincy. If not captained his points will lose you rank. I can still benefit from Sons points without the armband . It’s very likely Salah for me.

My premium defence will always give me a chance of points at both ends of the pitch when I have the attacking threat from Trent, Robertson, Cancelo and Alonso.

If Saka is fit, then opponents West Ham are another team highly likely to be resting players before their Europa 2nd leg. There are plenty doubles up on Chelsea attackers who don’t own either Son / Kane or Saka. I am hoping Arsenal and Spurs can really take advantage of weakened opponents.

If I opt to bring in two villa attackers v Norwich, I am certainly giving myself a chance in playing the fixtures. It’s the move I am favouring currently.

I will confirm my transfers on my Twitter account at least an hour before the deadline.

Possibly Mount to Ramsay and Cucho to Watkins.

Good luck everyone !!!!

An absolute carnage of a gameweek for me from 304k to 362k OR

If only Mount C have gotten the assist and James scored (hit the post) it would have been a different story! these are the small margins that can make or break your gameweek and the fpl season and just isn’t on my side this year.

My transfer for this gameweek is Thomas to Cash, I might get a hit or few and have fun the remaining weeks and tweet about it

Captain Kane
