I go into this week with 1 free transfer and £0.8m itb. My injury concerns are Lukaku, who’s rumoured to be fit and if true, then unless Rudiger is out long term I’ll roll my transfer. My big gap is no Alexander Arnold or Man City, and my plan next week would be to use my free transfers to move on Greenwood and fill at least one of those gaps. My line up decision is Livramento or Marcal – I’ve gone for Livramento based on home advantage and playing a Leeds team without Bamford and maybe Raphina too.

Captain Salah.

Good luck all

GW7 Review

I’ve gone into a bit more detail in my YouTube video this week, but to sum up a good gameweek and a healthy green arrow mainly thanks to Jimenez, Ramsdale and Duffy. A nice way to go into the International Break, especially having carried a free transfer over as well. Let’s see what GW8 brings.

GW8 Team

2 frees and £0.4m in the bank. Again, I’ve gone into a bit more detail in my YouTube video.

A few yellow flags have popped up – I’m not too worried about Alexander-Arnold and Lukaku as they look to be training ok this week, but Rudiger is a concern and it’s touch and go whether Raphinha will make it after a late return from international duty.

My plan going into this week had been to sell Jimenez for someone cheaper thus freeing up funds to invest in a City defender and I think I’m still likely to stick to this plan unless the Friday press conferences throw us up any other curveballs. I’d earmarked Armstrong as my replacement for Jimenez. It’s a risky pick – Jimenez has showed some form over the last 2 weeks and I always feel a little uncomfortable taking out a player in form, but his fixtures are a little trickier over the next 3 weeks and he’s a low ownership player so therefore lower risk to Overall Rank. Added to this the fact that Armstrong has little form, though the carrot is Southampton’s next five fixtures are really enticing. The other option is a sideways swap to Hwang – the advantage of this is that it frees up another £0.4m and I’m getting a player in form.

I’ll then use the other transfer to upgrade Marcal to Cancelo. If I make the Hwang move I would have the option to do Omobamidele to Dias (£0.1m short for Cancelo unfortunately.) One to mull over before Saturday morning. My team line-up picks itself otherwise and I’ll be on Salah for Captain.

As per usual, I’ll post my team on Twitter before the deadline – likely Saturday morning.

Good luck everyone and I hope you enjoy the games.

transfer summary: Either Jimenez to A Armstrong or Hwang and either Marcal or Omobamidele to Cancelo

GW7 Review

Points – 41 which resulted in a red arrow from 132k to 160k

A disappointing week which resulted in a second red arrow on the spin. Just 3 returners in Sanchez’s clean sheet, White’s clean sheet and bonus (who I got off the bench for Alonso) and Salah’s double digit return (which was neutral). It was a largely disappointing week all round for many so I won’t dwell too much on it.

GW8 Preview

I won’t be making any moves until after the Press Conferences on Friday but I have 2 FT and £1.7m. I have 2 flagged players in Rudiger and Alexander Arnold although the latter appears to be fit and I will hope for some news on Rudiger.

My main wants are Man City defensive coverage, Brentford attacking coverage. Foden could be a shrewd move over City’s nice fixture run. I also want Lukaku next week for Ronaldo.

My issues are Shaw (lack of clean sheets and tough fixtures), Alonso (lost his place by the looks of it), Pukki (just a bad WC decision, has 2 tough fixtures now before a great run), Benrahma (tough fixtures short term + 4 blanks in last 5) and Sarr (tough fixtures) provided that my flagged players are ok.

As it stands therefore my move will be Shaw to Cancelo and roll the 2 FT into next week where I’ll do Ronaldo to Lukaku and potentially Sarr to Raphina or Pukki out for Toney. We’ll see. My bench is reasonable to cover injuries this week so with flags and other uncertainties I don’t need to make any other moves this week. If either defensive flag is something long term then that person will make way for Cancelo instead.

Captain will be Salah. Other dilemma is playing Sarr, Pukki or Gallagher (currently on Gallagher) and bench order or Sarr/Gallagher/Pukki vs White as if Alonso is benched again I may need them.

Good luck all

Transfer summary: likely just Shaw out and Cancelo in

Background

Most FPL managers use their Wildcard chip when they have fallen a great deal of places in their overall rank or are in a good position and want to continue with the momentum and stay close to the template so that they can remain in the top places and slowly- gradually gain rank. In an ideal scenario I would have gone with the second but its not the case.

I currently sit on 264k OR which is not bad considering I am just 30ish points from top50k BUT my 264k OR has came as a result of 7 straight red arrows. I had a super GW1 that saw me at 11k and I have been gradually fallen ever since where I have only seen a gameweek rank inside the top 1mil once and that was in gameweek2. Bad captain choices (4/7 blanks) and poor transfers the reasons why.

I am not a patient manager and keeping the wildcard up until now after 7 consecutive red arrows is definitely a first. I also take a lot of hits and I have only taken a -8 this season so far so I have been (in my standards) patient but it has taken the fun out of the game so I pressed the button.

So my current wildcard draft has just 4 of my previous players. To address the elephant in the room my draft does not have Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Antonio. I am taking a 2-3 week punt on De Bruyne who has excellent fixtures and is building up form. I also wanted to keep Son in the team so Alexander Arnold had to make way for now!

GK

I went with Ramsdale and Foster. It is a common combination and a good one as for just 8.5 you can have 2 playing GKs (Hopefully Foster remains first choice under Ranieri). Foster can step in for GW 10 where Arsenal play Leicester away as well. I toyed with Raya and still thinking of it but for now its these 2.

DEF

Its double Man City Defence with Cancelo and Walker. I wanted Dias but funds weren’t available and I think walker is more nailed than Laporte who was greatly exposed by Salah in GW7. My choice of Chelsea D is Chilwell as I think will retain his starting position as he is great both defensively and offensively. White and Livramento are the other 2 cheap but starting options with great fixtures ahead of them.

MID

As I said, De Bruyne shows to be in form, Man City have great fixtures and he is just owned by 2%!!! He is an easy switch to Salah anyway so ill roll the dice here. Son stays in my team as he has been very good the past gameweeks and unlucky not to haul. Raphinha might be the most value for money player in the game so he is another player that’s stays. Brownhill is the cheap enabler that is a starter. The last midfield position was the last selected place of my team as I had 5.6 and I did not know if I was going to add a 5.6 midfielder and who? Or even go with a 5.6 defender. I currently have Doucoure. He is nailed even when Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison return whereas I think Gray and Townsend might hold a slight rotation risk once everyone is fit.

Fwd

Lukaku was in the team and definitely stays. My other 2 week punt is Aubameyang. He has 2 home games against Palace and Villa and he is on pens, he can haul on both games. He will make way in GW10 for Toney to fund Salah. Third spot is A Armstrong. He is cheap, has great fixtures and on pens until JWP is suspended.
It is a risky wildcard and definitely off template. But I compared my trios and thought of it as a controlled risk or a gold opportunity to gain rank if it works out. We will find out soon

Template trio My trio
Salah (wat A, mun A) Kdb (bur H, bri A)
Taa (wat A, mun A) Walker (bur H, bri A)
Antonio (eve A, tot H) Armstrong (lee H, bur H)
