Team explained

Like many my starting point has been how to choose the mix of Liverpool and City players on the expectation they will be the stand out teams again. Against the general wisdom I’ve been thinking about going without Salah and Mane – this is based on a mixture of gut feel; wanting to find a differential; and to add more balance to the team. In fact the draft below is my first with Salah included; with previous iterations including Firmino or a third Liverpool defender as a hedge. I’ve now ditched Sterling in favour of De Bruyne; and doubled up on City full backs. On balance this feels a more rational decision, taking consideration of: the rotation risk of City, the potential of De Bruyne at a reasonable price and the stronger Liverpool fixtures (Norwich and Newcastle at home in particular).

Looking at the positions separately:

Goalkeepers

I’ve always look to minimise my outgo on goalkeepers as the best performers are hard to predict (e.g. De Gea was terrible time last season and Etheridge was one of the top scorers) and the point spread is relatively small. I like the £8.5m single team combination making Brighton my choice for the start of this season; there is also a chance the new managers builds on the strong defence they showed at the end of last season. Once I’ve built team value I’m open to getting a premium keeper later in the season.

Defenders

I’ve generally played a 3-4-3 formation, but given the emergence of attacking full backs like many I am looking at having 4 or even 5 starting defenders.

Def 1&2: Two Liverpool defenders (Alexander Arnold £7.0m, Van Dijk £6.5m) are nailed; though open to swapping in Robertson.

Def 3:Walker (£6.0m) is my preferred city defender – he was only a few games short of Laporte last season.

Def 4 (changeable): Currently with Zinchenko (£5.5m) and links to my City hedge, open to change including finding fourth and fifth £4.5m/£4.0m rotating defenders.

Def 5 (changeable): Rico (£4.0m) current £4.0m filler.

Midfield

Mid 1&2: De Bruyne (£9.5m) and Salah (£12.5m) speak for themselves.

Mid 3: Zaha (£7.0m) reclassification as a midfielder for the same price as last season made him a standout to me when I first saw the new prices.

Mid 4 (changeable): Currently on Anderson (£7.0m) as I think West Ham fixtures look good after the GW1 City match; plus he’s got the potential to improve in his second season. Alternatives include a third striker (e.g. Giroud, Jota); a Leicester midfielder or even another City midfielder (moving to one City Defender).

Mid 5 (changeable): Guendouzi (£4.5m) current 4.5m filler.

Forwards

I usually go for big hitting forwards at the start of the season, so my current line-up is a bit of change, reflecting my increased spending in defence.

Fwd 1: Kane (£11.0m). Great value at £11.0m; plus Villa and Newcastle at home in first 3 weeks is very enticing (as an Arsenal fan I obviously hope Sp*rs lose every game)

Fwd 2: King (£6.5m). Bournemouth are popular based on some impressive attacking displays last season and some kind early fixtures; and King seems good value.

Fwd 3 (changeable): Greenwood (£4.5m). There is some hype being built in pre-season and if a 4.5m forward does play some regular minutes it would be gold dust. I also like the fact it avoids me having two 4.5m midfielders.

Despite me suggesting I have a relatively settled team don’t be surprised to see a completing different team next time I post!  Here’s how it looks:
