Gameweek 12 review

GW12 points: 70 (FPL average 48) Total points 663, Gameweek rank 459k, Overall Rank: 485k, green arrow 259k, Team Value: £102.0m

Here’s the points:

So a good gameweek where I got a 259k green arrow and moved up to 485k overall rank with 663 points.

I was a bit disappointed with Sunday as over night I was 290k OR and to only get 6 points from Alexander Arnold, De Bruyne and Sterling was hard to take.  Especially when Jimenez, Martial, Salah and Mane got big points.  Those players scoring was good for anyone who used my GW12 imaginary wildcard team as a base for transfers for the gameweek but not for my team.

Luckily my lack of bench made it difficult to get the lineup wrong although Lundstram did get very close missing a 1 on 1 and hitting the post.  With Spurs having an xG of 1.51 and 17 shots then the clean sheet was never going to be an issue but still that has really made me think about how FPL benchable Lundstram is.  What’s worse it won’t just be me thinking that so the damage going forward could be far worse if you get it wrong.

Apart from the Liverpool and Man City players the 2 disappointments were Aubameyang although I can’t really blame Aubameyang.  The manager decided to put his 2 strikers as wingers and make them track back rather than play them centrally.  Against a strong Leicester defence it was never going to be his day.

Newcastle’s 2.33 xG and 20 shots was a real bring back down to earth for the Eddie Howe inspired defence.  To be fair he’s only been in charge of Bournemouth for 430 games in 2 spells so I can’t expect him to have sorted out the defence in that meager amount of time.

2 free transfers and £0.0m in the bank.

Liverpool back in focus

I have a feeling this is going to be a significant week.  The fixtures turn for Liverpool with Palace, Brighton, Bournemouth and Watford in the next 5.   Getting in Salah and/or Mane is going to be a focus for many managers who don’t have either and already we are seeing the Man City exodus with 3 of the top 5 most transferred out midfield spots being Man City players.  My preference as I write this is Salah although he does have an injury issue which needs to be monitored although it at least appears he won’t play over the International Break.

Ideally I would like 3 Liverpool players realistically the 2 fullbacks and either Salah or Mane.

It’s not the end of the world for Man City

Man City have Chelsea h, and Newcastle, Burnley away in the next 3 which from an attacking perspective isn’t the end of the world.  Let’s not forget that Man City have scored 6 more goals than anyone else and have an xG of 11 goals more than anyone else.  They also shoot 4.5 more times per game more than anyone else.  Even away from home they’re still pretty fearsome.  While Chelsea have scored 2 more City are ahead by 6 goals in xG and 2.4 shots per game. So while a trade off seems a way of getting Liverpool assets ditching both attacking assets doesn’t seem necessary.  At the very least I’m not incredibly negative about the City attack like some seem to be.

What to do with a problem like Pierre?

The main reason I have an issue though is Aubameyang.  For me Aubameyang would be the natural target to transfer out given Arsenal’s form and the unpredictable nature of the manager.  I really wish I had never got him so I wouldn’t be in this situation now as I really hate taking out players when they have good fixtures ahead.  Southampton, Norwich and Brighton next makes him a very hard sell.  Watching the Watford v Norwich game didn’t help the situation either as Norwich defensively were beyond abysmal they were so bad.  Now obviously they had a CDM in Tettey as a CB and had Klose, Zimmermann and Hanley all injured but still.

Realistically it’s 2 players of £11m plus:

However realistically it’s 2 of Salah, Sterling and Aubameyang.  Now I haven’t gone though every possible permutation but here’s a few.  I haven’t spent a load of time over them so forgive me if it seems incomplete.  I will be spending way too much time over the next 2 weeks experimenting.  These are just a few initial thoughts to get my brain churning so prompt me if I’ve missed something obvious.

Aubameyang and Salah options

Sterling, Cleverly out Salah and Dendoncker in.

Sterling, De Bruyne Rico out and Salah, Robertson and Tielemans in

Sterling and Salah options

Rico, De Bruyne and Aubameyang out for Robertson, Salah and Ayew

Mount Aubameyang out and Salah and Ayew in

Salah and Mane option

Sterling, De Bruyne and Aubameyang out for Salah, Mane and Jimenez.

Lineup and captain thoughts

While the transfers are up in the air,  the lineup and captain issues are pretty irrelevant given how things could change. Here’s a lineup with the current team as it stands.  I imagine if Salah comes in he could be the captain but it’s all in the melting pot at the moment.

Here’s the pre transfer lineup for what it’s worth:

Early GW18 thoughts

As you are probably aware GW18 see’s a postponement of Liverpools fixture v West Ham.

I’ll either carry over a free transfer so I have 2 for GW18 and sell some Liverpool assets as they have Leicester away in GW19 softening the buy back problem or bench my Liverpool assets.  At the moment my bench is in no shape to pick up that slack with Cleverly injured and Cantwell out of the team.

To make it worse GW18 sees Leicester away to Man City and Chelsea at Spurs which isn’t exactly handy for Soyuncu or Tomori either.  It doesn’t seem worth using the free hit chip as I’m sure that will be worth more for FA Cup postponements later in the season.

Once I’ve worked out what I’m going to do this gameweek I’ll put some serious hours onto Joseph Crilleys transfer planner on the FFGeek Patreon subscription site to see how it could work out.

Hope you had a good gameweek
