fantasy premier league tips midfielders GW10 – player rankings

This is the 2nd article in our player rankings series. See the defender and GK player rankings article.

Methodology

I’ve started with a selection of midfielders that I think will start GW10 and have some longevity in the team.

I’ve then looked at their expected goals and assists data in 18/19 so far as well as how it relates to their historical numbers. I’ve then adjusted it for their ability to over/underperform, their bonus potential, their fixtures over the next 6 and any specific 18/19 factors and numbers.

Whether you believe the rankings or not there’s plenty of information to make your own decision

Stats definitions

SP/Pen: indicates whether the player has some set piece representation or penalty responsibility

Pts per 90: the FPL points earned per 90 minutes played in 18/19

Consistency: the % of starts where the player has scored a goal or assist. Sub appearances are ignored.

Mins last 4: average minutes of the last 4 matches. Generally I count sub appearances or rotation but not injury absences although there is some discretion there.

Fixture ease ranking so you can see who has the best fixtures from GW10-15 and GW10-12. See our fixture ease article

Underlying stats ranking is from our underlying stats article cumulative to GW9 where projected goals are turned into raw points. It’s their rank in relation to each midfielder on that articles schedule not for every midfielder. Info from the excellent free site understat.com article and the free site whoscored.com

VFM rank. I have divided their projected points by their price to get a rough value for money assessment. This time it just ranks them in relation to each other.

ATGS GW10 – 1 bookies anytime goalscoring odds for the player. It assumes they start and doesn’t include assist potential. However it’s too early for their to be odds at the moment so I’ll update it later.

Player values are as of Thursday 25 October.

Some comments and fixtures

Liverpool

Great entry fixture at home to Cardiff and with Salah being a captain favourite and confirming himself as 2nd in line penalty taker he looks a strong transfer option for those who don’t have him.  Great underlying stats even matching those of last season.  It’s just can he get back to finishing off the chances.  He’s 2 goals behind his expected totals and history show’s he’s an excellent finisher so you’d hope he would claw that back.

Mane played 90 minutes this week so looks fit to start

Cardiff (H)
Arsenal (A)
Fulham (H)
Watford (A)
Everton (H)
Burnley (A)

Man City

You can see from the PP90’s and the underlying stats ranking that the Man City players are very productive when on the pitch.  Trying to predict how long and when is a difficult game as Sterling’s benching in GW9 showed.  Take the information and decide which one you believe in from a returns and minutes perspective going forward.  I’ve made assumptions to get the ranking but it’s a mugs game to be honest.  I’ve penalised David Silva and Bernardo Silva’s minutes for De Bruyne coming back.

Spurs (A)
Southampton (H)
Man Utd (H)
West Ham (A)
Bournemouth (H)
Watford (A)

Everton

The tricky thing with Richarlison is that although he’s a striker that position hasn’t really been anymore productive than being an AM.  He also significantly underperformed his underlying stats at Watford with some poor finishing and although he has brought that back this season to some extent I find it difficult to totally sweep under the carpet.

Although Walcott is disparaged generally which is understandable given it’s 1 assist in his last 6 his underlying stats aren’t a million miles away from Richarlisons and although he’s no great shakes as a finisher his record isn’t as bad as Richarlisons.

If you believe Richarlison can finish off the chances given to him then you will rank him far higher than me

Sigurdsson can finish though and over performs his underlying stats with the odd screamer or 2 as icing.  It’s 4 goals in his last 5 games and set piece duties as well penalties.

Even in Man Utd’s current state the entry fixture isn’t great

Man Utd (A)
Brighton (H)
Chelsea (A)
Cardiff (H)
Liverpool (A)
Newcastle (H)

Arsenal

Ozil rightly got a ton of praise for his performance against Leicester midweek as Emery finally played him in his best position.  It’s hard to sweep under the carpet though how poor his underlying stats have been this season and although I’ve given him some history bump they are just so bad which is why he’s so lowly ranked.  The fixtures also don’t help

Nothing significant to say about Mkhitaryan.  Ok stats but minutes a bit questionable.

Crystal Palace (A)
Liverpool (H)
Wolves (H)
Bournemouth (A)
Spurs (H)
Man Utd (A)

Some others

Martial

When on the pitch he’s been productive but it’s hard to ignore the fact that it’s 3 goals from 4 shots and his underlying stats have been beyond wofeful.  That’s even before you factor in the competition for his place from Sanchez

Everton (H)
Bournemouth (A)
Man City (A)
Crystal Palace (H)
Southampton (A)
Arsenal (H)

Hazard

Needs monitoring for a back injury but hard to ignore how good he’s been this season and he continues to hoover up bonus points.

Burnley (A)
Crystal Palace (H)
Everton (H)
Spurs (A)
Fulham (H)
Wolves (A)

Anderson

Great fixtures are the main reason for the ranking here even though it’s only 2 returns in 9 starts.  Should hold his place after the Yarmalenko injury reduces some AM competition even though Chicharito may still complicate things

Leicester (A)
Burnley (H)
Huddersfield (A)
Man City (H)
Newcastle (A)
Cardiff (H)

Who I didn’t include

I’d like to see De Bruyne start this week before I factor him in.

The return of Eriksen makes predictions in Spurs midfield difficult and with Man City next I’ve swerved them completely.

Brooks, Iwobi, Ramsey and Knockaert due to gametime risk.

I also should really have included Willian so apologies there.  You can see his basic stats in my fixture ease article
