Five Fantasy Football Transfers to Look Out for in January

When it comes to frantically trying to find a January transfer bargain it is not just Premier League managers who pore over scouting reports and scour foreign leagues for a player that will turn their season around. Thanks to the immense popularity of fantasy football we are all now managers trying to get the right player for our teams.

For many there will have already been drastic squad changes. But the January transfer window gives fantasy football managers a chance to unearth a player who will bring them those all important points and give their side a respectable sheen. But who are some of the players that could arrive in the Premier League in the New Year and spruce up fantasy squads?

Big Names

Although there is always a lot of speculation concerning the top players and the top sides there is generally not much movement due to a continuing presence in the Champions League. One name that has been linked with a move to Manchester United though is Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitić. This seems a fairly unlikely January transfer but the Croatian’s attacking midfield play would definitely boost any fantasy points tally.

United are second in the table but a decent tip to claim their first Premier League title since the days of Alex Ferguson so current incumbent Jose Mourinho should be looking at one or two purchases in the New Year.

Next Big Thing

Besiktas have quietly become a bit of a force in Turkish football and last year’s title winning season has made the club even more attractive – as Pepe and Negredo’s summer moves demonstrated. But it is striker Cenk Tosun who has been attracting the attention of Premier League clubs. Palace and Spurs are interested in the Turkish international and both those sides could do well from having another goal scorer – and that would work well for fantasy squads too.

Goals Mean Points

There are players like William Carvalho who seem to be continually linked with a move to a Premier League. But whereas any English side would do well to recruit the Portuguese midfielder, his defensive style of play does not translate into fantasy football points. A much better buy would be his teammate Bas Dost. He has looked unstoppable in the Primeira Liga since arriving from Wolfsburg and now Everton are interested in bringing him to the Premier League. His style of play would suit England and he could be a very good buy.

Striker Choices

Timo Werner has had a very good couple of seasons since joining RB Leipzig from Stuttgart in 2016 and was the top scorer in the Bundesliga last year. The goals have not dried up this season and clubs like Liverpool have begun to take notice. Although Firmino is a good fantasy football player, Liverpool score a lot of their goals through their midfield so adding Werner would give them another dimension to their play. And the likelihood of a relatively small fantasy transfer fee would be an attraction to many managers.

Done Deal

Craig Shakespeare probably wishes he could have selected Adrien Silva for his team – as maybe the Portuguese midfielder would have saved him his job. Silva’s move from Sporting to Leicester is still in dispute due to his registration missing the deadline by just 14 seconds in the summer. He hasn’t been able to play for the Foxes this season so far and it looks likely he will have to wait until January to show the Premier League what he is made of. Fantasy football managers might be interested in his attacking skills that could bring in some vital bonus and assist points – once he actually starts playing.

Attacking players are generally the more valued when it comes to fantasy football and although there may not be too much transfer activity in the New Year, managers and players alike will be searching for that unheralded newcomer to boost their points total.
