Introduction

This season perhaps more than ever your chip strategy or avoidance of 1 could dictate your GW1 team significantly. Here we look at 4 strategies being put forward and give a view on the pro’s and cons

Remember here we are talking about the first half of the season Chips. Unless something drastic happens there will be no double or blank gameweeks and this article is built on that assumption. The 2nd half set of season chips will see different strategies than the first half because of these doubles and blanks

How your playing style and set up could dictate your chips strategy

Without making FPL manager strategy too simple I think there are broadly 2 schools of though on GW1 set up and both are centred around the bench.

  1. The minimum cost bench

a £4.0m GK, £4.5m Mid and 2 £4.0m Defs

This is designed to minimise the cost of your bench to maximise the strength of your starting 11 with hopefully players less fixture sensitive and with secure 90 minute starting spots. That means transfers are often just used for injuries or major fixture swings.

  1. The well rounded squadAll players are expected to produce returns every time they start. Here the players around the premium players can be rotated to maximise easy fixtures each gameweek. Less need for transfers to cover short term injuries

Strategy 1 – BB2. WC 4 or 6 TC 3, 7 or 16

If you are wedded to the minimum bench cost team then Coventry at home to Hull is the perfect way to set a base so ultimately you can get 2 £4.0m Defs a £4.5m and a £4.0m GK on your bench

Bench Boost GW2

At the moment we have 2 £4.0m Coventry defenders in Thomas and Van Ewijk who could fit that slot. There is no £4.0m GK at the moment so that would have to be upgraded to say £4.5m Petrovic who plays at home to Everton in GW2. There’s also no ideal £4.5m Mid which means you may have to go to the £5.0m Mid market where you go for someone like Yarmoliuk of Brentford who’s playing v Leeds

So you pay £1m over the minimum cost for the Bench Boost but it’s still the cheapest way for what’s probably going to be the best fixture for that cost

Wildcard GW4 or 6

Wildcard 4 has the fixture swing from Man Utd to Chelsea with Palmer plus others at home to Hull being a big draw. 6 is after the long 3 week International break but to me seems a less obvious fixture swing. Also managers who don’t want 3 Coventry on their bench can then reset the team

Triple Captain GW3, 7 or 16

This is where Haaland is home to the 3 promoted sides. Getting it used early in GW3 v Coventry lessens the chance of rotation for Haaland when the fixtures become more congested in the various competitions
