Hi all this is the 1000th version of my Bench Boost team, I hope it is the last one, I am trying to avoid Wildcarding next in GW31, so I’ve left 6 players with single gameweeks that have a good schedule for next GW31, and I’ve kept  Mane.

My Captain will be Aguero and Vice will be De Bruyne.

I am so excited the league is back and hope everyone is safe.

Good luck all, may we all be green!

If I will change something I will post it on my Twitter account

Summary:  Unlimited transfers and Bench Boost.  Wildcard post GW31

This may sound a little daft, but my strategy is to not have a strategy! What I mean by that is that short of deciding to Bench Boost this week, I haven’t decided yet what I will be doing in the future weeks with my remaining chips. In part, this is because of my experience playing Fantasy Bundesliga since the resumption of the German league and what I consider the implications for the FPL. Rotation will be widespread, injuries will be rife, while what we perceive as the form players will be quite different following a three month layoff. I therefore think it is inevitable that we will need to be flexible enough to adapt at short notice once we have seen where the land lies.

With this in mind, I am focusing exclusively on my Bench Boost team and leaving all other thoughts and plans until later on down the line.

As for the team itself, I had forgotten how draining it is spending most of my time thinking about who I don’t own, and who can therefore cause rank damage, rather than who makes the team. First up, Raheem Sterling. His explosiveness makes him very tempting, but I just don’t like the imbalance that his inclusion causes to the rest of the squad. In addition, I quite like the idea of Ederson as my third City player, simply because he ought to be less prone to Pep’s rotation. Secondly, Mo Salah. He’s been a permanent fixture in my team for the last couple of years, and his absence doesn’t sit easily with me. But he has a relatively tough single fixture after an extended break: for these reasons, I am prepared to take the risk and invest the funds elsewhere. After all, the focus of a Bench Boost team should really be on double gameweek players.

I’m pretty sure there’s a little more tinkering to come, probably with half an hour left until the deadline. However, I don’t think I’ll drift too far from where I am now. There are 11 double gameweek players in total. Only 3 players have made the cut from my previous team: Alexander-Arnold, Jimenez and De Bruyne. I don’t want to lose the value built up in the first two as I can see them being part of my team for the remainder of the season.

Captaincy at the moment is between De Bruyne and Aguero. Currently have it on Aguero but, again, this call is likely to go to the wire.

Anyone with any thoughts on my team, I’d be interested to hear them.

Best of luck to you all!

Before I explain the composition of my team, I should state that I am planning on using the following chip strategy:

Bench Boost DGW30, Free Hit GW31, Wildcard GW33.

I posted a tweet with the detailed reasoning behind using this strategy, but the high-level summary is that this allows three GWs of data before wildcarding. Additionally, I can maximise the bench boost with the unlimited transfers while remaining able to own players from the key teams in GW31 (Liverpool, Spurs, Wolves etc). GW32 could be a struggle, but let’s focus on this week for now!

For the bench boost, I was quickly able to put together the core of my team consisting of the following:

– De Bruyne and Aguero who will vie for the captaincy

– Three Sheffield United/Goalkeepers which will certainly include O’Connell and Lord Lundstram

– Grealish given he is the talisman for Villa

– Alexander-Arnold because he’s Alexander-Arnold

– Leno in the hope of save points

– Doherty, Mount, Abraham as single gameweekers with strong fixtures in GW30 & GW32

The key decision next was who I wanted as my 3rd City player and who will be my final striker with Aubameyang and Jimenez the main options. Essentially this becomes a choice between Sterling & Jimenez or Mahrez & Aubameyang where I am currently leaning towards the former. Either route leaves me with little money for my 2nd goalkeeper and 5th midfielder, so I have settled for the Villa pair of Reina and Douglas Luiz in the hope that at least get appearance points!

Good luck all and hope you are keeping well!

The level of anticipation is huge. I’m excited. Football returns after months with a rammed schedule, there are more televised matches than ever, a double gameweek to kick it all off, unlimited transfers to play with, chips being used everywhere… It’s genuinely quite hard to dial down the hype.

Let’s face it, nobody knows how this is going to play out. It could be the dampest of squibs or a glorious week of football that we’ll still be talking about next year. In all likelihood, it’ll be somewhere in the middle. I’m trying to manage my own expectations here. I’ve put together a team that looks okay on paper, but I’ve been stung before. The many single match players I’ve ditched could all excel – essentially rubbing my nose in the mess I’ve made – while managed minutes, rotation and plain old bad luck could scupper the 12 double players I’ve crammed into my squad for one week of glory before I Wildcard into something more durable.

You’ve got to play the cards as they fall, though, and this looks to be the last DGW opportunity. I wouldn’t normally rely on multiple Villa assets or risk a triple defence, but I see little point in being conservative. Missing out on potential points is far worse than them never appearing, and while there’s clearly an element of the unknown hanging over GW30+, I can’t see things getting much more predicable considering the schedule.

My Bench Boost team is below and it feels like I’ve got almost everything covered.

Defence

I’ve avoided Villa defence completely. I wasn’t keen anyway, as clean sheets are a rarity, but the recent rumblings about Reina’s place not being secure were enough for me to abandon any thoughts of utilising them to save money. Instead I’ve got two safe Sheffield choices in Baldock and Henderson and I’ve taken a risk on Lundstrum (I say risk because of his uncertain starting position, but when you consider his 40% ownership and goal threat the real risk is not having him). I’ve then opted for budget-friendly, but not unappealing, Boly and Lascelles as my single week players alongside the ever-present Alexander-Arnold. Lascelles has a new baby, but I’m hoping that won’t make too much difference. Leno takes the second keeper spot.

Midfield

This is where my biggest dilemma has been… Mahrez or Sterling. Having the much cheaper Mahrez (who was in far better form before the break) improved team balance and allowed for some stronger single-week players, but Sterling is more likely to play both matches and he’s due a haul. He’ll also be very popular with the many Free Hitters as they’re not having to stretch their cash across the bench. Having Sterling gives me greater protection, more potential minutes, and a higher points ceiling (if he finally starts delivering on his stats).

De Bruyne and Grealish need little explanation – I imagine there will be very few managers going without them – then my last two midfield places had to be the budget duo of Saka and Luiz. I don’t expect much from them but I might be pleasantly surprised. Even if I get 4 points from each I’ll see that as a result. Really, I’d have liked to have punted on McGinn, but that was only possible as part of my Mahrez team and he’s another minutes risk in an already unpredictable gameweek.

Forwards

This was probably the easiest area to complete as Aguero and Aubameyang seem all but essential. They may not deliver, of course, but I want to be on the right side of things if they do. That left shrapnel in the bank and little choice other than Samatta for the last spot. I’m happy with that, though, as his minutes should be secure and Villa will be fighting hard for wins.

Summary

Unlimited transfers and bench boost

So, after all that tinkering, my only difficult choice was Mahrez, Alonso and Doherty vs. Sterling, Boly and Lascelles. Man City minutes are an obviously lottery but, as he’s a potential captain pick and has a higher ownership, I figured the potential damage Sterling could do to my rank over two matches is worse than what Doherty and Alonso could – especially as I have Boly as clean sheet cover. It wouldn’t take much to sway me though, so I’ll be keeping my ear to the ground for any team news in the run up to the match.

Captain

Aguero captain. De Bruyne Vice.
