The background

The EFL cup final takes place next weekend in which Jose Mourinho can bring back glory to Tottenham Spurs with a trophy after a 13 year wait… or maybe not quite anymore because finally Daniel Levy has accepted the mistake made on replacing Pochettino. Leaving Spurs aside, the fact is that 4 premier league teams don’t have a fixture in GW 33. These teams are City, Spurs, Southampton and Fulham.

For my FPL team this means 6 players without a fixture, and with the free hit chip still available, it seems logical to use it this week. I am aware of the possibly for fixture rearrangements to come in GW35/36/37 that could produce more blanks and doubles, but quite sincerely I am fed up of what might or might not be. GW33 is here and now so I am playing my free hit this week.

In the article I will look at the teams and players I am considering, where the core of the squad will probably come from three teams: Leicester, Liverpool and Man United. I break down the options between attack and defence.

In Defence: Leicester / Liverpool / Brighton / Wolves

Not going to overcomplicate things in goal, I am picking Martinez. He has the highest points potential thanks to Villa allowing lots of shots to the opposition, even when conceding he typically still returns 3 or 4 points thanks to saves and bonus points.

As for defenders, Leicester have a great matchup against Crystal Palace and also have exciting defensive options in Castagne and Pereira, this makes Schmeichel less appealing in goal. The question will be whether to double up in defence or in attack with Vardy and Iheanacho.

Liverpool also have a great matchup against Newcastle, but have defensive booboos almost in every game, so I would just pick Alexander Arnold.

From the rest of teams, the fixture is decent for Brighton/Wolves/Burnley, they could all be an option, none of them is massively appealing, Take your pick, I’ve gone for Dunk.

In Attack: Leicester / Liverpool / Man United

Here things get a bit more interesting, despite being a week with less games there are still plenty of options. I’ve gone with double ups for Liverpool, Leicester and United, even a triple for United can be an option. I think Salah and Bruno are still a must, you can risk it without and take someone else but still high risk and I won’t do it. Vardy might actually be a nice differential given that attention lately is in Iheanacho. As for United, any of Rashford/Cavani/Greenwood is as good pick as the other, I’ve gone with Cavani, but might still draft in Greenwood too.

Who else to consider outside of these 3 teams:

Chelsea? No thank you, I couldn’t yet tell with certainty an attacker that will 100% start the next game, particularly with the Champions League semi-final in midweek to complicate rotation.

Arsenal? Lacazette was in hot form but he got injured this week, Aubameyang is out, not sure about anyone else, not sure either whether Arsenal cares much about this year’s premier league anymore or it is all about Europa League now. So I am out. Caveat that Arsenal have plenty of nice cheap players to fill the free hit benches. I will most likely have Holding and Smith-Rowe for this.

Leeds? An attacking team that can score against anyone, but realistically, wouldn’t expect more than 1 goal this week. Wouldn’t blame anyone picking Raphinha or Bamford, but I’ll pass.

Lingard? Yes please, give me some Lingardinho, arguably he has been the best player in the whole Premier League since January. Tough match against Chelsea, but still doesn’t put me off him.

Summary

In the picture is the team I have come up with: 3Leicester, 3Liverpool, 2*United, Martinez, Lingard, Dunk. The bench is Sanchez, Holding, Veltman, Smith-Rowe.

There is still many days and many games to go until the next deadline on Friday, but I won’t significantly deviate from this team unless new injuries reveal during the week.

The one decision I am currently not clear about is how to spread the Leicester spots, whether to double up in defence or in attack. Other than that it is all set, captain will most likely be Salah.

Good luck everyone
