Hi all, another good GW, which would have been great if Bruno had made a cameo and kept all these points on the bench!

I am now just outside the top 50k, so salvaged my season as I was still above 250k only three gameweeks ago. Plan is to activate my Bench Boost and three possible transfer scenarios:

1) I simply replace Maguire with another unattractive option as I already have the limit of three Newcastle, Spurs and City already. It will probably be with a Chelsea defender,

2) if Bruno Fernandes is declared fit, Ederson and Maguire for Petrovic and Gvardiol which would leave me enough in the bank for Bruno Fernandes to Saka next week or

3) if Bruno still out, Maguire and Bruno out to field a full Bench Boost.

Transfer summary: to be determined. Bench Boost activated

Here’s the team prior to any transfers being made

GW36 review – the to-be-determined Bruno Fernandes effect

As I write this article, I await the outcome from the Monday night game of Crystal Palace-Man Utd which will determine where I finish this gameweek (Geek Note: points above include that game). I have limited expectations of return from my lowest owned player Diogo Dalot but, almost regardless of result, I am comfortable with my decision to play him instead of using a transfer on the injured Schar. The more significant impact will come from Bruno Fernandes who is a significant rank threat, but is looking like a major doubt to play according to today’s rumours and I am unsure how negatively autosubs will affect my rank.

I differentiated myself from the wildcard template by selecting Brennan Johnson instead of Bruno in the knowledge that either player would be benched for me in GW36. With returns from the rest of the template attacking players, I feel that my decision has been somewhat justified, even if Johnson disappointed in the double in 35. Therefore, I would feel slightly unfortunate that other managers on the late wildcard strategy will benefit from Bruno autosubs due to the likes of Gordon, Jackson and even Richarlison coming on. Having said that, it is all ifs, buts and maybes as Bruno could have bagged a brace tonight instead so I will just have to roll with whatever the final outcome is.

Gameweek 36 review:

The title race looks like it’s going to the wire, the relegation scrap too, but a high scoring FPL week was dominated by a four goal Haaland show, that scuppered anyone going against him in a late push for mini leagues catch up.

Arsenal stay top with a predictable 3-0 cruise v Bournemouth after a controversial penalty had paved the way. Man City have an extra game with matters in their own hands and crushed Wolves 5-1 with that Haaland masterclass. And Mo Salah was back amongst the points as Liverpool beat Tottenham 4-2, a fourth successive defeat for Spurs which is a crushing blow to their champions league place.

Villa were beaten by a late penalty rebound at Brighton but that Spurs collapse means Villa are now in great shape for the Champions League place. Jackson scored twice as Chelsea thrashed woeful West Ham 5-0. And Newcastle hammered Burnley 4-1, leaving the Clarets staring relegation in the face.

Luton dropped vital points in a 1-1 draw v Everton. Forest took full advantage by winning 3-1 at doomed Sheff Utd. Brentford played out a goal less draw with Fulham. And the action concluded on Monday with Man Utd collapsing 4-0 at Palace with an Olise brace.

I had 8/11 returners in a triple digit score of 102 points, the highlights being a 42 point captain haul from Haaland and a 16 pointer from Jackson. I had a full set of returns from my attackers, with my defence being my weak link.

It was a high scoring week but I still gained 8 points over my safety score for a welcome green arrow from 179k to 153k, which is my highest rank position of the season and on the back of a pre GW35 wildcard rank of 228k. With bench boost in place this week, I am looking to push closer to that 100k mark.

My GW36 significant moments:

The 42 captain points from Haaland were unusually helpful. His four goals on an effective ownership including captaincy of just 139% at my rank level when I held 200% of him were huge. It’s not often his points are so beneficial but he’s been out of sorts and many are chasing in mini leagues so plenty took him on for captaincy. Nicely done Erling ⚽️ ⚽️ ⚽️ ⚽️

The big decision pre gameweek was who to bench from the “template wildcard front eight”. Haaland, Foden, Isak and Palmer had to play. So any of Son, Gordon, Jackson or Bruno Fernandes could have been benched. I took out Gordon on the back of his previous 14 blanks in 16 away games. He assisted in a 6 pointer which could have been more. Plenty benched Jackson’s 16 points. In the end, it all proved irrelevant as Bruno was out injured !!

There were solid contributions throughout the team, including the 16 pointer from Jackson who has certainly repaid the faith on wildcard. Isak missed a penalty but also scored, Gordon would have had two assists rather than one if Isak had not missed the pen, so a costly miss. Son again looked out of sorts but found a goal late on. Foden underwhelmed with an assist.

Palmers goal negativity impacted my rank due to his EO being over 100% at my rank level including captaincy, the Arsenal clean sheet did too as many have double Arsenal defence. There were fears of Ederson being out for the season but he recovered to play, but disappointingly duly conceded while Petrovic cleaned from the bench. Burn conceding after 86 mins with the match won was both costly and frustrating. Dalot contributed erm zero !!

Being 0.1M off affording a second Arsenal defender on wildcard through my mistake of selling Dubravka too soon before a price rise, punished me this week as Arsenal managed a pretty fortunate but predictable clean sheet while Dalot scored nothing. Missing out on that second Arsenal clean sheet was the difference against the template wildcard team. A costly 6 points against the template crowd.

The one positive from missing the second Arsenal defender is I would have been on Maguire who is injured instead of Dalot who isn’t. An extra transfer to the good.

There are so many 50-50 calls in FPL and we always remember the ones that fall against us, conveniently forgetting the ones we benefit from. Those who gained 16 Jackson points off the bench because Bruno Fernandes missed his first United game ever through injury should remember that “jam” !!! I started Jackson so his points were not “dirty points” for me. Just saying.

But I got my own dose of jam too. I could easily have landed on Schar and Maguire ( both injured ) on wildcard but went Burn and Dalot instead which will at least save me vital transfers. So that was one that fell in my favour.

So what next ??

Just two gameweeks to go !! We will soon be hanging up our FPL boots for the summer, and thinking ahead to the Euros !! It’s been a tough old season which has challenged our patience at times, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

GW37 is going to be a biggie !! Six teams play twice in a huge double gameweek and it’s an opportunity for the more prepared managers to make gains in our mini leagues. Many of us will be playing bench boosts this week, as well as a few free hits and triple captains.

Most engaged managers will have been stocking up on GW37 doublers, either through a late wildcard during the last two weeks or by use of their transfers. The ultimate play this week will be 15 doublers and 30 games on a bench boost.

Injuries are still continuing to challenge us, particularly frustrating if bench boosting as we need all 15 to play, they can’t be tucked away on our benches. It’s going to be a tense wait until Saturdays deadline with early transfers not recommended, unless on exact money.

If bench boosting, it’s worth taking a -4 hit to take out every player who has no fixture for a player who plays twice. Nothing much to lose with two bites of the cherry and likely appearance points covering the hit.

Dare anyone take on the Norwegian robot for captaincy in a double gameweek ? We saw what happened last week to people chasing in their mini leagues. But with six teams playing twice, there are certainly a wide range of doublers to captain or triple captain.
